Long distance is not easy. It is not easy to watch someone through a screen instead of your eyes tracing the curves of their face while they’re standing in front of you. It’s not easy to have a bad day and not be able to see one of the only people that can make it better. For something exciting to happen and not be able to celebrate about it that night. To not be able to have brunch on Sunday morning, or make dinner plans for when you get off work, or snuggle up together on the couch for one of the nights a tv show comes on that you both love. Sometimes you miss them so much and it’s like you can’t get relief from it. Sure, you plan times to see each other but some nights are bad and you need them right now and you need to touch them or you’ll die and your heart has never felt so lonely. Long distance is not easy but one day it will be worth it. One day you’ll live in a cute apartment together where you can wake up next to each other and fuck each other to sleep and a see you later means see you tonight when we get off and it’s time for dinner. Long distance is a choice. It’s a commitment to say, “I love you more than all of the distance between us.”

The Uniform

When you look at him you see a uniform, But I see the man who showed me how to live for more.

When you look at him you see a hard face and tough haircut, But I see the man who gives me laughter and romance when I need them the most.

When you look at him you see a robot taking orders, But I see the man who has the courage to be what the rest of us are too scared of becoming.

When you look at him you see a college dropout, But I see the man who teaches me more in one sentence than I could learn in 100 text books.

When you look at him you see ribbons and medals you don’t quite understand, But I see the man who went above and beyond to bring what he was able and more to a God forsaken table.

When you look at him you see combat boots, But I see the man who has walked across deserts and navigated around bombs to help the ungrateful.

When you look at him you may just see a uniform, But I see the man who works hard even when no one else wants to. I see the man who loves me even when he’s thousands of miles away. I see the man who cooks dinner for his parents and drives to the grocery store late at night to pick up the one ingredient I forgot for my recipe.

When you look at him you may just see that uniform, But I see the man in the uniform with the charming eyes and sexy intellect, Whose hands are rough and calloused, yet soft and warm. I see the man who is everything that you are not.

Deployments are hard. They take your best friend away from you for weeks, months, even years at a time. They test your resilience and make you want to scream. Communication is sometimes limited and you feel let down more than you’d like to. But they can be worth it in the long run. They make your love stronger, they help your partner improve, and they show you just how independent you can be.

Deployments are hard, but they don’t last forever.

It must be so romantic

No. It’s not. I use to think so too. Until I started dating someone in the military. Until I got into a military relationship. We say more goodbyes than we do hellos. We can’t give each other or others yes or no answers about our future because we don’t know where we’ll be in 6 months or a year. There’s so much uncertainty about everything. Everyone told me how hard it would be. How hard the lonely nights and distance and nothing set in stone for the first while would be. But no one told me how strong I needed to be for this. Military girlfriends have to be bad ass. I have to be strong enough for both of us when he gets doubts and insecure. And he has to be strong enough for both us when when I get doubts and insecure. I ask him every time our visits are over if this is still what he wants. The constant goodbyes and maybes and countdowns. He tells me more than anything that every goodbye is one step closer to not having to say them again. No one told me that I would love him differently than I’ve ever loved anyone or anything else. No one told me I would cherish every single second. Or stay awake long after he’s been asleep just to feel his arms around me. Not wanting to sleep because to me, it’s wasted time. Yes, military girlfriends have our cute signs and cute t-shirts. We go all out for our men, and that’s romantic. But until the day finally comes where we’re together 24/7, it’s lonely and it’s hard and it’s full of so many insecurities. But it’ll be worth it. That I know for sure.

I look like a HOT mess from crying all day... nobody prepares you to deal with all the emotions of a deployment. Nobody tells you how hard it is to do the little things without your SO. Nobody prepares you to eat more than your weight in chocolate, have mental breakdowns in the middle of Walmart and just try to do Day to day activities without completely losing it. This is the hardest thing I've ever had to deal with but I know we are strong no matter the distance. ❤
