I love deep talks. Like, hell yeah, tell me about why you’d prefer to talk to your mom rather than your dad. Tell me about your favourite lyrics in the songs you listen to everyday and why they’re your favourite. Tell me about the dog you had when you were growing up and how he was your best friend. Tell me about what kind of books you like to read when you’re alone in your room. Tell me about the things you think about right before you fall asleep. Tell me anything and everything.

10 steps to loving yourself again
1. don’t take shit from anybody. correct them when they mumble ‘slut’, as if their hands are covered in anything but dirt. shout your name from the rooftops, declare it the only thing anybody can ever call you, unless they are calling you beautiful.
2. drink alcohol only on occasion. don’t use it as a replacement for water to hydrate you. don’t use it like an ocean to drown yourself in. don’t spend your whole pay-check on it. instead buy some bobby pins, don’t be ashamed of showing the world your face.
3. get out of bed the first time your alarm rings. five more minutes will only make you more tired so instead use that time to finally eat breakfast for the first time all week.
4. accept compliments from people. if they didn’t mean it, they would’ve kept quiet.
5. buy a new shower curtain and don’t let this one turn red at the bottom. the shower is no longer a place for cutting. your blood won’t change the colour of the ocean. wash your hair with vanilla instead.
6. if he asks you to send him nudes before he even knows your middle name— block his number. you are worth so much more than just your body.
7. put sticky notes on your mirror of all the good things about yourself. write ‘my heart’ on one of them. cover the entire mirror with sticky notes. read them until you start to believe them.
8. invest in some Victoria’s Secret lingerie even if you aren’t having sex. when girls in the school change room ask who you are wearing it for, say ‘myself’.
9. when someone asks how you are doing, give an honest answer. sometimes people get tired of hearing ‘good, what about you?’. give them something real. pour your heart out. they wouldn’t have asked if they didn’t want to hear.
10. wash all of your clothes twice. you don’t need to smell like him anymore. buy a new body wash and lather yourself in it. inhale the new you. you might even like it better than before.

there will be a moment when you realize you are more grown up than your parents are. this is the loss of childhood, my love. it is when you’re standing in the kitchen and one of your parents is screaming about something and you recognize: you will let them win the fight not because you are wrong, but simply because you know that they will keep shouting unless you drop the subject. you expect them to have childish understandings of things. they will hold onto their concept of the world as if it was not a changing thing. they must be right, and they must be somehow more right than you, always, in everything. their idea of control is so necessary to who they are that you just let it go.
this is the moment. you are 11 or 17 or 21. and you realize that you’re more mature than they ever were.
and in some odd, sad way, this frees you. where they have stagnated, you continue.

I have been suffering with a major depressive disorder for awhile now. The older I became the worse it became. Nobody would listen to me when I tried to talk about it. So I brushed it off until I couldn’t anymore. I was spiraling out of control and didn’t know what to do. I was crying uncontrollably all the time. I was beating myself up in my head over and over again and I believed everything I was telling myself. “You’re useless.” “Nobody likes you.” “You’re disgusting.” “You’re a nuisance.” “Everyone would be better off with you.” On constant repeat and I couldn’t stop. My anger was getting out of control I would snap so easy or just freak out. It was like there was this black fog swirling in my chest constantly that I couldn’t get to go away. I was suffocating, my chest felt so heavy all the time. Or I would just be numb and not give a shit about anything. So many times I would imagine crashing my car and wishing I had the courage to do it. I maybe had one good day a month and even then it didn’t last all day. It’s hard to even put into words how bad I felt because it feels impossible to explain. I was told to not go on medication because I had to deal with real life, which wasn’t the issue. Life would be good and my mind and body would still be going crazy, I couldn’t control it. I finally worked up the courage to go to the doctors and I was diagnosed with a major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder. People closest to me were shocked because I barley showed it. They only got little snippets but nobody saw the full effect of what it was doing to me because I tried to keep as much as I could hidden. And they thought I was just over emotional. I did decide to go on medication and it has helped me a lot. At first I felt amazing and I could have cried over the fact of how good I felt. That I never thought I would feel good again, I forgot how it felt to not be weighed down every second of every day. Even though I don’t feel as good I still feel pretty good for the most part but there are still frequent times where the cycle repeats. It comes and hits me hard for awhile and hard to deal with. I feel like I can’t make it through the day and all I want to do is lay in bed. I do go to work everyday and never call out but recently it’s been very hard. I mentioned cutting back a day at work to the people close to me and they all said not to. That I need to be at work and threw me a million reasons not to do it. And I was at a standstill again of people telling me what I should be doing when they have no clue what goes on in my head. I may be a little shorter on money but all my bills will still be paid and that’s all that matters to me. So I made the decision to cut down a day at work every other week to see if it helps me, especially the days where I am so dragged down. I talked to my boss and explained my situation with teary eyes because the depression had been hitting me hard. She was very understanding and was surprised and said “I never would have guessed you always seem so happy.” That struck a chord because I think back to hearing about people who have battled depression and taken their lives and people always say how happy they seemed, always trying to make others happy even if they can’t make themselves happy. My point is that someone will always have an opinion on your life and think that they know better. They may try to put down what you say and the choices you make. But the only person who knows what goes on in your mind and body is you. You only really know and if you have to make some different life changes then do it if you think it will help. Because I’m starting to learn that I need to do what’s best for my mental health and if it’s the wrong choice then I can change them. You need to do what’s best for you even if other people don’t agree. What everyone thinks is a bad decision for you could be one of the best decisions you could have made for yourself.
