What Time Period is The Untamed?

Why The Untamed cannot be assigned a historical time period: An essay

because I have been haunted by people doing so and I need Peace xux

we will be using lots of fun evidence :3

First is government structure. The Untamed is based in a feudalist-type social structure with large Clans but no Emperor/king other than the vague Chief cultivator. If the Chief Cultivator is no king-type person, this puts it firmly in the Bronze Age, before the Shang Dynasty (which had a king* [*we not quite at Emperors yet! Despite what Sima Qian might say….]. It also has human sacrifices which I feel Lan Wangji would disapprove of…). The Bronze Age is gotdang problematic for many, many reasons. 1) Their weapons are steel. Not bronze, or iron, steel. Which then throws our hot gay cultivators forward 900 years into the Western Zhou period (steel was widespread for weapons around 800BC, earliest). That they can’t be in because it has a king.

But if the Chief Cultivator can be classed as a king-type?  Our second problem is standardization: Our boys got standardized writing/characters, standardized measuring, standardized money, but NOT a government army or standard laws (they have their own Clan fighters/laws). This puts The Untamed both before and after the Qin Dynasty (210BC), getting spaghettified between dimensions. Also, at Qin Dynasty we get unified, Emperor-fied, and feudalism gets squished so THAT ain’t right!

Shall we continue to try and slap a date on our magical heroes who can fly on swords? :3 Philosophy/religion also fucks us up! :3 Mainly in The Untamed we know about Daoism, and Confucianism seems ingrained, so now we DEFINITELY can’t be directly in the Qin Dynasty, because they were massive Legalists >:( But we can’t be earlier than the Warring States Period (Eastern Zhou) when Taoism and Confucianism popped up. Ding Ding, that’s a half-time break! So: A rundown of Dynasties We Can’t Be In so far: Shang (too early for weapons), Eastern Zhou (too early for weapons), Western Zhou (too early for standardizations + weren’t feudal), Qin (Emperors are Not Allowed, feudalism is gone), Han (too unified, organized military, standard laws etc). But wait!! There’s more!

The Guanyin temple seems to have Indian-inspired art, which yeets us way forward into the AD (just). Which makes all those dynasties too early. Hoo hoo fun :3 Don’t go yet! Call in the next ten minutes and we’ll give even more pointless proof! We actively know about Japan in The Untamed! Not just that, they are writing music. So now we’re not barely dipping our toe in AD land we’re well in the future bois (1st-5th C AD depending on how long our Lans have had those naughty books!). BUT the government hasn’t made it past 1600-1500BC or latest 200BC, and neither have the military and laws 8I So that rules out all the Dynasties ^-^b

Thus: I have successfully cleared up which time period The Untamed belongs to which is: its own fantasy world time period :3
