INTERVIEW ☆・。・☆ BRIE MORENO
"I live for wobbly lines"
Brie Moreno is an illustrator based in Toronto who makes zines. She is also the creator of The Smelly Sisters comic series for Polyester Mag. We talked to Brie about her artwork inspiration, fave zines and the best thing she's ever gotten from a thrift shop (image included).
You've got an exhibition up on Art Baby Gallery at the moment -can you talk about what inspires your style and the work you create?
I like to work with themes and subject matters that I’m familiar with, which is why most of my work acts as a diary. I always look through my camera roll or Photobooth for inspiration, especially for reference drawings. Toronto has a lot of weird little stores in various communities so I’m always exploring and snapping pictures of fun toys and food labels that I think are pretty or weird, that could potentially work in a drawing. I also always visit clip art websites and look at stock photos for inspiration, especially when creating narratives that centre around my diary.
For you, what difference does it make working in pen/pencil and digital? Do you have a preferred medium?
I used to only work analogue because it was easier for me to have more control over whatever I was working on. I also really appreciate the way analogue mediums allow for little mistakes to look beautiful and energetic- I live for wobbly lines. That being said, I really love how I’m able to use digital mediums to push my work in a direction I’ve never really explored before (like where have drop shadows been all my life?). I’m currently working on a Newhive piece so I’ve been practising making GIFs, and it’s been really unusual for me to see my characters come to life in that way.
Your SCRUNCHEESE zine features drawings inspired by an amazing thrifted painting of a horse - what's the best thing you've ever thrifted?
My cat pillow!
What are your favourite zines? The ones that I always look to for inspiration are ‘Club Queen Rat King’ by Emma Louthan, ‘Daily Routine’ by Tara Booth, ‘Boxing Zine’ by Noah Wingren, the mini comic ‘Infinite Walk-Thru’ by Bin Bag Babbies (JM KE, Simon Hanselmann and HTMLflowers), ‘Crawlers VOL.1’ by Jessica Butler, and ‘We Would Be Sisters’ by Grace Miceli.
Any upcoming projects or plans for 2015?
I’m so excited to have work up at SXSW and on Newhive that’s for a show curated by Molly Soda. Once schools finished I want to make another zine that’s more text and comic based. I also love working with paper mache and plaster so hopefully I can explore those mediums more this summer.
Which artists are you into at the moment?
I’ve been having to do a lot of painting for school, so for inspiration I’ve been looking at a lot of artists like Gary Panter, Misaki Kawai, Chloe Wise, Grace Miceli, Amy Stober and JD Banke. While I was working on BB zine, I was really influenced by the works of JM KE, Patrick Kyle, Morgan Maher, Taylor West, Noah Wingren, Luisa Rodriguez, Maren Karlson, Ginette Lapalme, Molly Matalon, Kendra Yee, and Jessica Butler.

INTERVIEW ☆・。・☆ GRACE MICELI
"It's really important for me to be able to instil confidence in younger female artists"
Who better to start our new series of interviews with creative babes than our recent collaborator, artist and writer Grace Miceli. Founder of Art Baby Gallery, an online exhibition space that is specifically interested in providing a platform to showcase work by female artists - Grace shares her inspirations and tips on how to sell your art.
What have you been up to lately? Recently I've started making a lot of clothes, I'm calling it "Art Baby Gear" it's mostly crop tops with my drawings on them. I have a new series of drawings combining my favorite snacks and sex toys.
You're always doing different things. Which work are you most passionate about? Art Baby Gallery is my favorite project. It's really important for me to be able to instil confidence in younger female artists. I want the artists I feature to know that by having and sharing their creative output they are demanding attention, and that's significant.
How did you start getting creative? My mom is an artist and my dad is a musician, so I started really young taking art classes etc. And then when I was a teenager I didn't go to parties or have a lot of friends so I had a lot of free time and built a black and white darkroom in my parent's basement, made internet friends on livejournal and started a pop-punk cover band with the 3 friends I did have.
How long have you been making and selling art? Any tips for beginners? I sold my first drawings when I was a senior in college, it was a pair, Chris Burden and Marina Abramovic, to one of my professors. I'm still figuring it out myself but my advice is to take really good care of your art, store it safely and scan all works on paper and try to keep an organized inventory of everything you make. When figuring out how to price work make sure you take into consideration the price of materials used and the amount of time you spent planning and making the piece. I've also found that making more "useable" products that feature my art (stickers, shirts etc.) is the best way to get the most exposure since then your work is actually affordable to more people.
Fave artists? Shana Sadeghi-Ray, Molly Matalon, Vivian Fu, Elyse Silverberg, Brie Moreno, Morgan Maher, Chloe Wise, Jayson Musson, Devin Troy, Alexandra Marzella, Petra Collins, Audrey Wollen, Luisa Rodriguez, Kelly Surdo, Cheyenne Sophia, Arvida Bystrom & Maja Malou Lyse
What were your early influences when you were young? Lola Bunny from Space Jam, my mom & Jessie Spano from Saved By The Bell
What inspires you now? All the girls at night on the internet, Rihanna, my friends, Love & Hip Hop Hollywood, late night walks to Taco Bell.
Upcoming projects for 2015? I really want to have an IRL Art Baby Gallery exhibition in NYC, so I'm going to try and make that happen.
Fave object in your work area? My beta fish Lil' Romeo, he keeps me company when I'm drawing, he has a plastic leaf in his fish bowl that he takes naps on.
