okay so basically, everyone remembers the falling out they had right? it's literally right. there. the one thing shiro wasn't willing to give up was a chance to prove himself, despite how futile it was. he'd already basically gotten himself a place in history, but he wanted that mission. to look at his illness and go fuck off. to not let it control him. and then there's adam. he was already the more down-to-earth guy anyway, considering he was a professor (i believe?) and literally he just wanted shiro to be safe and stay with him and just. not risk his life over something that was completely idiotic (to him). he wanted shiro but he also couldn't afford to lose him in that way, of which he was so certain.

so we can look at this way: "i was busy with the stars" representing shiro's ambitions and dreams and wanting to prove himself in spite of his sickness. "you were looking at me" is adam. he's looking and seeing and just. there. to the side. supporting him, but you can only stretch so much.

and in the song too! we fell in love in october is honestly such a nostalgic, bittersweet song and i associate that with this too. it's a goodbye and a good luck.

anyway, yeah, i haven't watched voltron in years actually. but yeah. and THANK YOU @indigo-skies2315
