Devotional by Emily North
1 Peter 3:3-4: “Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.”
These two verses are always a struggle for me. They are easy to know in my head, and a lot harder to believe with my heart. It’s so easy to get caught up in what I look like and compare myself to others. But ultimately, that’s not what God is looking at. He looks at the heart of each one of us, knowing us more completely than we even know ourselves. God is pleased when we strive to become more like Him.
Which is great, but what does that actually mean for my daily life? Does this mean I should never wear jewelry? Only wear a potato sack for clothes? Nope! It is important to remember that cultural context of the churches to whom Peter was writing. In many of the cities, pagan worship involved sex with the priestesses in the temples, and the priestesses of whichever god or goddess was worshipped in that city typically wore lots of jewelry and the finest clothes. Knowing that, we can see the heart of this instruction is to set the Church apart from non-believers. That is a standard that is still applicable today. As believers, we are called to behave ourselves in a way that supports our witness that Christ is our Lord and Savior. We are measured against that standard in all aspects of our lives: how we speak, how we treat others, how we dress, and so many more places.  That doesn’t mean abandon all your jewelry and nice clothes, but to take a step back and make sure that your heart is chasing God above all else and your appearance reflects that.
So, if we are not judged on our physical appearance, and God values the “unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit,” how do we have one? I always draw back a little when I read that description, because it feels like I am being told that I need to be quiet and timid. That’s wrong. The spirit God wants for us comes from spending time in His word, praying, and resting in Him. A gentle spirit is a fruit from God. God provides us the ability to become more like Him and grow in each of the fruits of the spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, self-control, and gentleness. A gentle spirit comes from God guiding us to be more like him. But what about a quiet spirit? Do I need to stop talking? No, it’s an inner quietness that comes from peace. It is the calmness that comes from trusting God with everything in you and knowing He loves you and has a plan to use you for the glory of the kingdom.
Easier said than done, right? The first steps are to regularly be in God’s word and in prayer. Nothing is too small to bring to God in prayer. The deeper your relationship with God becomes, the easier it is to trust Him and let your spirit feel the peace in trusting Him.
With that, here are a few things I’m praying for in response to this passage:
- That I don’t put physical appearance above inner character when looking at myself and others
- To have the strength to trust God with everything
- To feel God’s love for those around me
- That God reveals which fruits of the spirit need improvement in my life

All-University Sunday Shoez
What is Sunday Shoez, and why was it created?
Last semester and early this summer, our philanthropy team began brainstorming new ideas for a philanthropy event. Previously, the Beta Tau Chapter held Tri Delta Gameday, a campus-wide watch party in McLane Stadium to support our football team. With the event set to be in November and the impending cold weather, however, we started to realize that it was time for a new season of Tri Delta philanthropy.
In dreaming about our new event, we asked ourselves countless questions. What was our campus missing? How could we incorporate the spirit and celebration of giving in a single event? What are our goals beyond philanthropy that also matter in this event? From these questions, we established our values for the event based on what our membership and organization hold as mottos: let us steadfastly love one another and bring you. As leaders, our chapter thinks big, and at first, these aspirations seemed too lofty. How could we actualize the values we hold dear in a fun, exciting, and compelling manner? Suddenly one of our Vice Presidents stated, “Y’all might think this is crazy but I have an idea…” These are our favorite kinds of statements. With this thought, Alison proposed the idea of an all-university semi-formal, 80s themed and open to all Baylor students. We understood this bold vision, and we continue to cultivate this event as a game changer.
We realized that in our time at Baylor, we had never seen a philanthropy event where multiple organizations had paired in proceeds and missions. While Tri Delta is the sole host of Sunday Shoez this year due the event’s newness, we have left the second philanthropy along with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital able to change over the years based on different partnerships. This year, are giving to Mission Waco, a local philanthropy dear to our hearts as serving the city we have come to love. In years to come, we aspire to partner with other organizations, recognizing our mission as servant leaders to give willingly and generously.
Another goal of the event is to add to the culture of inclusivity at Baylor University. Formals and dances seem indicative of a typical “college” experience, but we realized not all students have the opportunity to experience this special tradition. Some student organizations are just getting off the ground, while others might orient their budgets toward other operations. Some students are not part of organizations and just need a chance to have a fun night out with friends. With this semi-formal and future organizational partnerships in mind, we invite all Baylor students to experience the joy found in kicking off our “Sunday Shoez” and giving as powerful beyond the individual.
In this way, Sunday Shoez is an event hosted for all students. You’re invited! Come as you are! Or dress up for a night! Bring your friends or organization! We planned this event with YOU and philanthropy in mind. Be a part of giving to causes that save lives and support families. This event is about participating in something that matters and cultivating an environment that welcomes all. Are you in!?

“I love Tri delta for so many reasons, but one of the biggest ones is our dedication to serving St. Jude. I’m continuously awed by the amount of love and passion these girls pour into our fundraising every year; not for the title, but for the kids. When we go to St. Jude every fall, we see the impact we have on the organization and it drives us to keep moving forward and doing more and more to help in any way we can. That’s the love and passion that made me want to be a Tri Delta.” – @hannahspag (at Baylor University) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bpj69bdj-Rw/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=n1e0pada1swj
