lots of thoughts on Scarecrow & Joker relationships + my Joker design (tw: kinda detailed body horror description) + sketches
I know that they never had long lasting alliances with each other in comics, but I personally think that they would become a horrendous menace to society if they worked together.
> Imagine combining fear gas and laughter gas. There are infinite possibilities of whatever gas-abomination will come out of this hellish mix.
The least violent version I could think of are effects like hallucinating random people smiling hideously? Like that “Smile” horror type of thing. Or something more casual like caulrophobia boost. Or scary killer-clowns running around in Gotham. Imagine laughing hysterically while seeing your greatest horrors come to life. And you physically can’t stop laughing.
These ideas are just a tip of the possibilities we can get out of this combination.
> They both are Bat’s fangirls whose entire purpose is to torment and destroy him. Their main goal is to break Batman’s mind and they both partly succeeded in some of the comics.
Imagine how violent things would get if they worked together. Poor Bats would have had an even more severe attack on his conscious if those two sadists combined their power.
> The only thing that would save Gotham (and Batman’s psyche) from being demolished by these two idiots is that a nerdy loner and a chaos machine are not a stable combination fr. Joker can’t cooperate with anyone for a long time without betraying them over a slice of cheese. He rushes in new ideas and gets bored easily like an iPad kid, while Scarecrow is much more calculating and deliberate, so Crane would probably get tired of Joker’s erratic behavior really quick. Their break up is inevitable and it definitely will end with a really powerful BANG.
Bonus: I think it would look like a more gruesome version of Knightfall arc where they fought with a pack of chips. Remember when honker beat up poor spookster with a chair? I just hope that now spookybooky will remember that he has long running-jumping legs for. a reason.
Their alliance is like an explosion — short-lived but chaotically powerful.
> If Harley would be present during this event than things would get even worse. I LOVE headcanon that Scarecrow and Harley are psychology buddies and that they either worked together as colleagues or he was her professor back in the days. Maybe that’s kind of OOC, but I feel that Scarecrow would really get angered by Joker’s treatment of Harley. Crane grew up in abusive household and seeing his friend being treated like a trash by her partner? Clown is on his way to get several wounds from scythe immediately. Imagine what drama could unfold with Crane trying to convince Harley that she should leave that freak. DC, please, can we use Crane’s psychiatric license on it’s full potential? Whatever the ending would we get, you can’t deny that such arc would be at the very least intriguing?
> I prefer stories where Crane is mostly moved by his cold, scientific curiosity. He was a vengeful idiot at the start of his career, but now his main motivation to do crimes is his interest in the different manifestations of fear. So, this is where another source of problems in this alliance arise: Scarecrow would definitely try to not only break the Bat, but the Clown too. Joker is known to be fearproof and he can’t be affected by psychological manipulations. Fear and anxiety are born from our rationality, from our understanding of the fact that every action and event has its own consequences. Joker’s rationality is lost due to him being a manifestation of madness.
This confuses Scarecrow, who believes that every human has something to fear. And scientific mind transforms this confusion into the curiosity. Imagine Scarecrow fighting on two fields simultaneously. He is allied with Joker, and he knows that the Clown can’t be manipulated. Joker will immediately see any smallest attempt in Scarecrow’s delving into Joker’s mind. The Clown cannot be reached. Or could be? Will Scarecrow finally find Joker’s breaking point? I mean... we already know what happened in Arkham Knight. Bro did it. But still. There are many routes to one goal and I think this is what makes such comics interesting in the first place. Also we should admit that in that scene fear toxin was again (as always) used as a narrative tool to show Batman/Joker in the spotlight, while I’m talking about giving more Scarecrow-centered narrative (I’m scarebro obsessed over a dude in burlap what did you want). What conclusions will he make? In their battle with Batman, whose brain will Scarecrow choose to crack open? What if Scarecrow’s interest for once would shift towards another fearless man? Why wouldn’t Crane after all of these years try to break the mind of a fellow colleague-in-crime rather than Batman?
Maybe he will fail as he did many times. Maybe he will partly succeed. Maybe he will finally win. Who knows. The possibilities are endless. DC please do it.
> Imaginary unfolding of this situation: Joker does most of the chaos-bringing job, running around and fighting Batman, while Scarecrow mostly stays in the shadows, rarely appearing on the scenes. He does all “boring cooperative planning thing” and only times Batman sees him are rare occasions when Scarecrow whispers something ominous while calmly standing in the shadows. And than evaporates or smth. Joker and Scarecrow are both kinda theatrical kids, you know? So the events will escalate until some banger scene where one of them (or two of them... or all of them) finally breaks psychically and/or physically. Imagine Scarecrow circling around Bats like in Arkham Knight (I love this scene SO MUCH). Would be cool.
Damn, that sounds like a fic. Anyway. What did I want to say. Joker and Scarecrow would betray each other for a chocolate bar but as long as they are cooperative Gotham will have a really gruesome roller coaster.

Thanks for listening this podcast lol. You can write me if you are interested in some other headcanons on my spookster&honker and spookster&anyone. I love thinking about random Gotham rogues shenanigans. There would be more thoughts on Scarecrow’s relationships with other rogues in da future. Heheheh.
