You awake in a dark room, at first unaware of where you are, but quickly remembering.

“Ace? What’re you doing up?” The voice of your companion asks from your side.

He doesn’t seem very tired.

“Pardon me if I’m not very tired while we’re camping out in a haunted house.” You respond, still rather annoyed that he managed to rope you into this.

You make to continue, but are cut off by the sound of footsteps behind you. Whipping your head around, you expect to see another friend, or perhaps even nothing, but instead you see… the one you were just talking to?

“Ace? Who’s that?” He asks, seeming to genuinely be confused.

Your head turns to the person next to you, only to find a set of warm, brown eyes.

You could’ve sworn your friend’s eyes were blue.

Dread fills you as you scoot back, trying to make distance between yourself and the stranger, but as your breathing grows shaky and uneven, so do your movements; when you exhale, you see your breath in front of you. Your “friend” is undisturbed by this, and merely draws closer. When he smiles, his teeth are sharp like the Dragapult living in the schoolyard, but they seem almost… like mist in a way.

“What’s wrong, Ace?”

His voice comes out warped, like a spell that’s starting to wear off; and were the outer parts of his eyes always yellow like that, instead of white? And you don’t remember him dabbling in make-up either, but the red around his eyes seems to say otherwise. His breath is ice cold on your face, and the grin he sports is almost animalistic. You glance at where your actual companion was just standing, but there’s nobody to be seen.

Your breathing goes erratic, mind dissolving into panic and fear as you cover your face with your arms, refusing to look at… whatever it was, any longer.

“It’s just me.”

You awake to find yourself in a simple, but uncomfortable pale blue economy seat on a plane flying from Hammerlocke to Mesagoza. How long had you been sleeping? You’re not sure, but the movie you were watching had long since ended, and there’s an announcement playing on the intercom.

“Ladies and gentlemen, please fasten your seatbelts, stow your tray tables, and return all belongings to the overhead compartments as we begin our descent into sunny Mesagoza.”

You do as you’re told, not that there was much for you to do anyway. You find yourself staring out the window.

At first there isn’t much to see; you’re flying above the clouds and all you can see is pure white, but as you begin to descend to a lower elevation, the towns and cities of Paldea quickly become noticeable. You can make out landmarks you were taught about in school, like Glaseado Mountain in the distance, which makes you shiver just thinking about it, and the Great Crater of Paldea, where the grass seems even greener than it is outside of it.

What catches your eye the most, however, is the city of Mesagoza below. Everything in the region always seemed so colorful and bright, genuine and vivid, but Mesagoza always appealed to you the most, with the street food vendors, and specialty stores, and the tiny figures seeming to be happy with themselves. You see now that you were correct, a smile appearing on your face as you catch sight of the grand and magnificent Naranja-Uva Academy, your entire reason for arriving in the beautiful region.

You’re able to make out the teeny tiny figures of students, perhaps leaving after a day of hard work, but even barely visible, the bright scarlets and violets of their uniforms are clear as day, while the building is open and welcoming, even after centuries of providing the most prestigious curriculum in the world.

Inhaling deeply, you find yourself more excited than ever to begin your brand new life, vivid and full of color.
