When I decided to go on a search for some documentaries about Modigliani and his work, I came across this video by “The Forger’s Masterclass”. He’s an artist that forges works by famous artists. In this video he teaches his students how to paint like Modigliani by replicating his technique, brush strokes and use of colour. I found this video really helpful as it helped me understand a lot about his paintings and the way they are constructed. The hues which he uses, such as: terracotta, crimson and dark burgundies which create that erotic atmosphere within his paintings. Modigliani was often criticized for his “Sentimental Italian Line”. He would paint a thick continuous stroke, carving his subjects with a fluid outline; this border defines the outside of the shape placing all the emphasis on the body.

Developing my ‘hollow’ heart and mind concept The first sketch conveys my idea somewhat how I pictured it in my mind and the second sketch is a more thought out interpretation, linking the idea with a stylised interpretation of my inspiration piece [Modigliani Madame Z]

Here are some of my sketch bits and bobs. I’ve started writing down all of my significant dreams which I can remember so that I can turn it into a visual story and form a substantial narrative for my final piece. I’ve also started to think about composition and some imagery I can include within my illustrations based on external sources [other people’s dreams]
