Social Media Policy
The current state of social media ethics: what trends are happening in the industry?
Social media has definitely made some significant changes in the last couple years. With new social medias rising in popularity, like TikTok and BeReal. Within these social media platforms specific trends that come from each are on TikTok people posting short videos that range anywhere from 15 seconds to 10 minutes. Their latest update is being able to make 10 minute long videos. BeReal is a platform where everyone gets the same notification to take a picture of what you are doing in the moment. These are just some of the recent trends happening in the industry.
What are two current cases related to social media ethics? In social media we experience many cases of ethical problems. One current case is how the Supreme Court is wary of limiting protections for social media platforms. It's a case where there is potential to alter the structure of social media/the internet. Another current case for social media ethics is how many states are cracking down on banning TikTok from users. They don't like how it is run by the Chinese government and how they invade your privacy.
Outline the current code of ethics for social media by a professional organization you would be interesting in joining as part of their social media staff. A social media platform that I would be interested in joining as part of their social media staff would be VSCO. VSCO is a platform that allows you to post photos without seeing people's likes, comments, followers, etc. I like how private it can be allowing people to just post for fun and out of their own enjoyment without the negative side of social media.
Brands/professionals with strong social media ethical codes: what brands are utilizing proper social media ethical practices? A brand with strong social media ethical practices is Patagonia. This brand practices good ethical codes because their websites adhere to their customers wants and needs. For example, they have a big policy where if something doesn't fit, rips, is the wrong size, etc. they will send you a new one in replacement of the old one. They also are big on recycling and have a very friendly outlook on social media.
Are there any professionals that you feel practice strong ethical behavior on social media? What are some takeaways you can bring forth in your own practices? A professional/celebrity that I feel practices strong ethical behavior on social media would be Selena Gomez. I think she fits this well because of how she portrays herself online. She has a very kind attitude towards her fans and shows everyone her true authentic self. By her doing this her fans feel more connected and close to her than other people that are rude and unwelcoming. Some takeaways I can bring forth in my own practices is to be honest and show my true authentic self because people will gravitate towards people like that.
Key concepts and issues: what main concepts do you think are necessary to adhere to for your own personal conduct online?
One main concept I think is necessary to adhere to for my own personal conduct online is to not spread fake news. By spreading fake news it will be misleading people from what is correct. Another concept I think is necessary to adhere to is be authentic and honest like I stated previously above by being authentic and honest people will gravitate more towards you because they can trust that you are a good person showing their true self.
What to do and what not to do: what main concepts do you feel strongly against and want to make sure you avoid on social media? One main concept I feel strongly against is negative and rude comments/posts. I feel strongly against this because throwing out negative and rude remarks to anyone never has a positive side to it. It will only hurt someone and spread more hatred to the world.
Bullet point 5-10 core concepts that you will follow as a practicing social media professional. Include citations that you used
Be consistent when posting content- I think this is necessary for people to remember you and keep on following you
Use multiple social media platforms- not everyone uses the same social media it's good to have multiple so more people know who you are
Practice good ethical behavior- It shows your followers that you are a good person they can trust.
Be transparent- Show your followers who you are
Be authentic and real- Always be open and honest
Don't spread hatred
Staying up to date on recent social media news- This shows you care to stay active on your social medias staying up to date with what's going on.

Lets Feed America
By Bailey Buchetto
In America everyday we suffer as a country to still help those in need. From starving children to the low class poverty they struggle to stay afloat finding anything to live off of. It's devastating to imagine how people in our country are having trouble finding basic necessities like food and water. That's why I chose, Feeding America. I believe that this nonprofit organization is something that can make a big difference.
Through Feeding America they stated, "Through a network of more than 200 food banks, 21 statewide food bank associations, and over 60,000 partner agencies, food pantries and meal programs, we helped provide 5.2 billion meals to tens of millions of people in need last year." Feeding America works with many food banks around the US to help feed people in different areas. They started something called the farm bill which is, "The farm bill is expansive legislation that governs many nutrition and agriculture programs. These nutrition programs—and more—work in tandem with food banks across the country to assist families and individuals facing hunger."
With Feeding Americas social media sites, it varies with their following. With each site they have it has a different amount of followers than the other.
First off, I want to talk about their twitter account. They have about 4,683 followers on their twitter. This is where they want people to spread the word about Feeding America with different hashtags. On their twitter they post mostly about the farm bill they are trying to pass and working together with other food banks.
The other social media site I will be looking through is the Feeding America's instagram page. On their instagram they have 152 thousand followers. This site is a bigger platform for the Feeding America organization they get a lot more acknowledgement and recognition on their Instagram. On their instagram they mostly post about volunteer work, partners, stories and different programs and bills they are trying to pass. It has a lot of the same stuff as there twitter, but each social media account is more focused on one thing than the other.
After searching through both the twitter and instagram for Feeding America I noticed some of the vanity metrics both of them have. Since both sites are very similar in the content they post it kind of goes hand in hand with what metrics I would change. I think for both sites they should include more personal stories about the people that have had a life changing experience with this organization. With more stories I think it will open more people's eyes to the real life people are facing. Therefore, with that being said it will force people to reshape and get the word out more for more people to understand what Feeding America is about.
This non-profit organization has many interesting programs that go along with it. The first one is TEFAP which stands for The Emergency Food Assistance Program, this is where they move food from farms to food banks to families in need. The next program they hold is SNAP which stands for The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, this is a program that helped about 40 million people put food on their table in hard times. SNAP benefits are delivered every month through an electronic benefits transfer card which help people buy groceries. The last program is the CSFP which stands for Commodity Supplemental Food Program, this program is helpful for seniors. It's a box of healthy foods that gets delivered to them monthly.
With all that being said, I think social media plays a huge role in how non-profit organizations big or small get established. There are local organizations that get the recognition from the people that are local, but like Feeding America this organization gets recognition globally Social media can be a huge help in the fact of getting the word around to people. Since non-profit organizations are mainly donation based social media is a great outlet to post about the organization. In an article of Forbes, it touches base on how social media is beneficially in marketing your non-profit organization. Some key points that were stated was social media posting is free so it won't cost you money to advertise your organization. Another point is that social media assists in growing a network of volunteers. When more and more post about it, it gets an audience of people that may want to help out the organization and volunteer. With everything said, hopefully more people get a good understanding of Feeding America and spread the word.

What is social media?: Bailey Buchetto
When I think of social media I think of a wide platform that allows anyone to create and share content. It's a way to stay connected with people we love as well as meet new people. Through the years social media has made some serious changes and improvements. Making it easier to share thoughts, interact, and connect as social media updates through time. From my personal experience with social media I remember when instagram was only just pictures. Now it has everything else including videos, messaging, and you can even be an influencer through instagram. A lot of the time different social media platforms will try to make their app or website better than another platform. This is so they can stay on trend with what's going on and keep up with the most popular things people like.
Social media is something I enjoy. I use it in my free time to keep up with the latest and feel connected to the world. I like to see what my friends and family are up to and what they post. Occasionally, I will post a picture on instagram of something recent that happened in my life. I post for my own happiness to create a page of memories to look back on. I am also interested in tiktok I don't tend to post anything, but rather watch and keep up with what's going on. Through tiktok I learned a lot of recipes, diys, and fun things to try when I have free time. All in all social media is defiantly part of my everyday life.
When it comes to social media there are some good and bad reasons for using it. With those good and bad reasons come strengths which can be helpful to getting a better understanding of it. One strength that I have from using social media is that it doesn't take me long to adapt to new changes. With social media changing so often from new improvements and updates it's easy for me to adjust to new features that the app/website brings. On the other hand there are also challenge/weaknesses that comes into play when I think of social media that being it can be a very negative environment to be around everyday. With that being said seeing negative posts and news from social media everyday can affect the way we perceive the online world at time.
With so much negativity on social media I want this class to give me a better understanding that we can also use social media for good purposes and positive experiences. Each newer generation that starts using social media all they know is what they see and a lot of what they see is negative and fake news. I want to show and understand that we can use social media for good reasons instead.
