Sirius awoke to multiple voices calling out his name, concern clear in their tone. Eyelids fluttering, he tried to take in the blurry images, and after a few blinks, Remus and James came into view.

“Wa-happend?” he mumbled, pressing his hand against his aching head. “Last thing I remember is we were dueling…

“We don’t exactly know!” James immediately answered, while Remus leaned down to kiss him soundly on the lips, tears in his eyes. “We were bloody surrounded, mate! Death Eaters in every direction! I lost sight of you, so did Moony!”

Remus nodded fervently, face pale. “It’s a good thing you put up such a strong shield before you fainted, Pads, or you would’ve died. The Aurors said they’d never seen one so intense before.”

Sirius frowned at that. He thought back, trying to remember his last moments of fighting before he’d passed out, but…”I don’t think I cast a shield charm,” he said softly, eyes narrowed in confusion. 

“You’re confused. You got hurt pretty badly,” James responded bracingly. “Who else could’ve done it, right?”

“I…right,” Sirius nodded, dropping the issue. Because James was right.
