   he couldn’t blame zach for sounding surprised to see him, barely sure why he there himself and yet a part of him just needed to see his ex-boyfriend — to know he was okay and happy over the holidays. though he was surprised at how quickly the other male turned to race off, heart breaking impossibly further as zach appeared back with the present in his hand.  “  you didn’t need to do that —   ”   the words fell softly, tired smile pulling to the corners of his lips as his head shook.  “  i just…  i’ve been holding onto it and it was always meant for you,  it’s nothing special but  —   you can take the picture out, i know you probably don’t want that bit now.   ”   he muttered as his head nodded softly down in the direction of the present he was placing in the other’s hands.  it wasn’t much, an old frame that he’d filled with a picture of the two of them. for a while he had hoped it would be a good sign for their relationship, to having people know about them as a couple and really being together. but maybe now zach could just sell it to some antique shop.  at least it would stop finn having to look at it tucked aside on his desk, not quite able to throw it away.  “  you don’t have to open it now…  i just wanted to see how you are?  ”

“ i kind of planned us spending christmas together this year... so that’s why. “ he said honestly as he looked at the other. “ it was nice of you to come by... “ when finn continued it felt like zach’s stomach was turned inside out. it was so much harder to be so close to the other without being able to touch him like he used to. “ thank you. “ feeling the others gift in his hands it wasn’t hard to guess what it was. zach had never been good at giving gifts so his was nothing special. it was one of his favorite books that he had been wanting for finn to read for forever. “ and if i were you... i would tear out the first page. “ he swallowed hard as his free hand went up and ran through his curls. careful green eyes looked up at the other, “ so... you’re staying in town for christmas and new years? “

       he’d never been a fan of christmas. the concept was nice, but despite how hard his sister tried to make it special   —   it could never counter the reality of their parents. there was just something missing, the obvious sense that he wasn’t with the person who meant more to him than anyone else as he’d picked quietly at his dinner. for a few days finn had sworn to himself he’d moved past it — that he didn’t mind being lonely over the holidays if it meant that after new years he would focus on his studies.  yet somehow his feet had found themselves carrying him to the all too familiar front door, fingers pushing dark locks anxiously back from before his features as he waited for it to pull open.  “  hey,  merry late christmas.  ”  the words fell almost as a whisper, heart dropping to his stomach as brown eyes took in the familiar features.  “  — i uh, i have something for you.  ”  fingers held out the poorly wrapped present, the nondescript wrapping paper that was once going to be a gift when for zach got home and they’d gotten back together properly.  only it had never happened, and he couldn’t look at it anymore.  //  @badassteller·

many times zach had dreamt of them making up and going back to what they were, but then he would wake up and face reality. things were just too complicated for him to see a way that he could make things right again and that was all. so zach did what he thought was right, which was staying away from the other. giving finn space do live his life. it had been a slow christmas with his family so he was surprised when he heard the doorbell ring. and even more surprised to see finn standing there. “ oh hey, merry christmas. “ he looked down and saw the present in the others hand, which made his heart hurt just a little more. “ is it for me? “ he couldn’t help but sound surprised, “ i just... wait here. “ zach said before he turned away and sprinted back to his room, of course he had thought about something for finn too. but he never thought he would get the chance to give it to him. he took it and hurried back, “ if we’re exchanging presents... “ with an unsure look in his eye he held it out.
