-he did Not mean to call himself the king and queen’s royal advisor. they asked him who he was and he panicked. andrew found him facedown on his bed moaning “why did i do thaaaat” and andrew went “i don’t know, varian— why did you do that?”

-that being said, he was very nice to the king and queen. it’s supported by frederic calling him “his most trusted advisor”, but i feel that varian would separate amnesiac-fred and normal-fred in his mind (*cough* showing more maturity than the king again *cough*) and treat him kindly. he would be particularly gentle around arianna, since he wouldn’t be able to look at her without vividly flashing back to crushing her ribcage.

-for a week or so, he sleepwalked. it stopped when andrew found him and shook him awake. (it was a sight to behold when it did happen. the puppet-king’s nefarious advisor, wandering through the halls and looking so much smaller without his coat. his eyes are half-open in the moonlight and he stumbles forward, occasionally murmuring to himself. he is endlessly searching for something long gone.)

-i don’t think varian knew about the enslavement of the coronans. forcing people to work in mines would absolutely have been “harming them”, and i could see andrew keeping him too busy in his lab to piece things together. i go back and forth on this, though, depending on what type of guilt i want to write varian having. he’d feel horrible about “being too stupid to figure out where the jewels were coming from”, but he’d also feel horrible for intellectually knowing what was happening but not understanding the full extent.

-i’m pretty sure this is canon, but the separatists treated varian like more of a tool than a friend. he was aware of this, but it wasn’t much different than how rapunzel, cass, and eugene treated him a year ago, and he was too lonely to care that much. he stayed by andrew’s side whenever andrew allowed him to.

Hiii me again, what do you think Team Radical’s fear is? Irrational or rational? (Like, I headcannon Nuru has an irrational fear of liminal space)

i think varian has an irrational fear of letting his hair grow out too much, because he equates it to those three months alone and going insane, and then prison afterwards. he cannot let it grow past his shoulders, and he will force the team to stop if he thinks it’s time for a haircut. he also gets a little jumpy around full moons, since it’s harder to ignore the moon’s presence then, and its rocks essentially ruined his life. (also varian with that useless bit of magic i keep talking about, being able to sense the state of being the moon has and how it’s focusing on him.)

yong would probably struggle to acclimate to their campfire. he’s always operated under the assurance that fire is a Bad Thing and Not The Intended Result, so it would be a while before he could sit around it and not feel like he’s doing something wrong.

nuru… i think she’s constantly worried about losing her belongings, to the point where she acts like the world might end if she doesn’t know where everything is. it’s partially because of the impact the meteors have (they hide things in their wake, including bodies), and partially because of the curse of the meteors itself (who’s to say koto won’t be wiped out, with nothing to remember them by?). she has to hold onto every single thing she brings from home.

hugo would fear being cared for. no one can buy him new glasses, and he’s stealing all his new clothes. he links being tended to with his old family in his mind, which makes him fear being left again. if he’s self-sufficient, he’s not a burden.

i always had this vision of them getting very sick and sending him off to an orphanage ahead of time since he hadn’t caught the illness. so his last memory of them is them convincing him to leave, and if donella is a bad parent in this interpretation, she could absolutely play with that to farther hugo’s abandonment issues.

i can also imagine them being killed in a robbery (like my bestie das has talked about).

i really like the headcanon that olivia was hugo’s older sister, and when their parents died, she tried her best to take care of him until something happened to her, too. and hugo named the mouse after her.

…hugo’s got a lot of problems, man. he & varian really are meant for each other.

has varian ever had cause to go in rapunzel’s room and see that painting of him with the automatons?

how did he react?

did he try to play it off, while inwardly wondering if she kept that memory as a trophy or a reminder that he’s a threat?

did he get angry? did he stay angry, if so, or was the slight way rapunzel’s eyes widened enough for him to force himself to calm down, especially with that image hanging above him, that reminder of what happens if he gets furious enough?

did she realize that anything was wrong, and if he reacted in an obvious enough way, did she paint over that section?

i don’t even think rapunzel would be in the wrong to have that reminder exist, necessarily. varian did hurt her. it’s a way for her to process her emotions, like journaling. but there does come a time when— especially if she wants to be his friend— it has to be painted over in order to make a new start.

i hope they did have a conversation, no matter what varian’s reaction was. i hope they were able to put the past in the past and move on, as much as they can, as close to their respective former selves as they can afford to be.

headcanon that varian rubs his throat and winces slightly when he lies, due to a slight pain that occurs every time he says something untrue. since the truth serum didn’t affect him for as long as it realistically should, let’s say it faded, but had that unpleasant side effect.

it’s a very obvious tell for anyone who wants to find out if he’s lying.

Hii! I’m interested to hear your thoughts on what you think Hugo and Donellas relationship would’ve been like ?? I can’t quite tell if I see it more as Hugo kinda joking around with her and seeing her as a motherly figure or more so intimidated by her— I’d love to hear your thoughts!

i’ve usually depicted her as more intimidating, but caring for hugo deep down. that can either set up a confrontation where she realizes she hasn’t been loving him in ways he could see, or it could mean that their dynamic never changes and hugo ends up leaving without staying in touch.

i dunno, i just like me a bit of toxicity in my hugo & donella dynamics. really-bad donella and really-good donella are also favorites of mine.

but you don’t have to come to a decision, either! if you’re a writer, just write whatever fits with the fic, and if you’re just an enjoyer of the fandom’s creations, keep an open mind for however she’s depicted! that’s the joy of vat7k: nobody’s wrong. except for when they are.

Any thoughts/headcanons about the extra hairstripe Varian has in a lot of the Vat7k designs? I always thought it was an interesting detail.

i either headcanon that he dyed it himself— as a way to reclaim the original stripe that he kinda can’t do anything about— or that he got it after ulla possessed him. i’m much, much more partial to that interpretation >:D (i also like imagining him with one glowing eye, stuck the color it was when ulla was looking through his eyes.)

another interpretation is moonshard varian: it started growing when he realized he’s partially magical. (and, i must reiterate: this magic is pretty much just useless and weird. so this extra stripe is a visual representation of that.)

so the thing about “the alchemist” is that varian is not very good at hiding that persona. he’s been living with people who know what he did, and his life has been so defined by it that it’s almost impossible to hide/not mention.

but he’s got big baby blue eyes that are only unsettling sometimes, and he says “fiddlesticks” when he’s mildly annoyed and “gee i’m bushed” when he’s tired, and he sings lullabies and tells bedtime stories to get his raccoon to fall asleep, and he’s a giant nerd with such endearing enthusiasm that brightens the lives of the people around him. so no one suspects.

varian carries a nail clipper with his supplies, yet when nuru finds him biting his nails to shorten them anyway, he says “prison habit. we weren’t allowed to have weapon-like things” with a completely deadpan expression. and nuru just laughs at what she thinks is a joke and pats his shoulder as she goes by.

it almost gets to the point where varian is trying to tell the gang, but none of them believe him.

i have this really dumb subtle-moon-varian headcanon where the oceans protect him. because of the moon and the tides.

except it’s just the ocean. not rivers, not lakes.

and it’s really inconvenient, because he does not need protecting.

he’ll try to swim in the ocean, and any waves will just part around him so the water is completely still for a five-feet radius. he can’t dive down because the water will just pull him right back to the surface. he can’t go surfing because the entire ocean is determined to be as safe and moonshard-friendly as possible. he hates it.

Hi! Not sure if you’ve been asked this already but do you have any Varigo headcanons :0?

oh, my boys!! also, people can ask about character headcanons over and over, because i’ll usually have more in the time that has passed since i’ve gotten that question! (meaning. you know. over two/three weeks. not once a day or something.) hello in return :D

-varian has flipped hugo over his shoulder and carried him to make a point once. hugo cannot remember what that point was because he got flustered.

-in that vein, varian is actually the more flirtatious one once their relationship is solid. hugo still cannot believe this is happening. (not that hugo isn’t a good boyfriend! he’s just in shock & actually very easily flustered once he realizes varian is sincere. while varian can’t believe his luck either, he has his wits about him a bit more.)

-they’re both horrifically touch-starved. one of hugo’s biggest love languages is touch (i feel like varian’s more of a “words of affirmation”, “acts of service”, and “quality time” guy, but he absolutely does love touch from the right people), so he’ll usually just glom onto varian when he’s not doing anything too important. picture varian translating an old tome while sitting on hugo’s lap, hugo resting his chin on his shoulder to watch. that sort of thing.

-lighthearted arguing is one of the ways they show affection. they’re both ridiculously intelligent, so it’s like a form of playtime for them to be combative and see how well the other can defend their stance.

-i headcanon hugo as someone with saporian heritage, but i know that’s not the most popular consensus. either way, varian’s a linguist and absolutely learned hugo’s first language for him, if he didn’t know it already.

-i have always firmly believed that hugo stroking/running his fingers through varian’s hair can get him to calm down and even get sleepy. the same trick works with varian stroking the bridge of hugo’s nose. it’s like they figured out how to hack each other’s coding.

-hugo absolutely flipped his shit when he had to go into rapunzel’s room for some reason or other and saw the evil varian painting. regardless of the reasoning behind that being there, he was Mad.

-both sides of varigo have the worst self-esteem (they make each other more confident in themselves, don’t worry), and will take a verbal jab without complaint, but if you insult the other in front of them, they’ll get so aggressive in the blink of an eye.

we don’t bring up varian’s celebrity crush on eugene enough. imagine being in love with daniel radcliffe and then he comes to your house for help with something. and then your world essentially ends and you have a mental breakdown, and he’s part of the people leading an army to your house. and then you become lab partners. like.
