October 10th 1780: Great Hurricane of 1780 begins
On this day in 1780, the deadly Great Hurricane of 1780 - also known as the San Calixto Hurricane - began when it hit the coast of Barbados. In Barbados, 200 mile per hour winds destroyed nearly all the homes on the island, and ripped the bark off uprooted trees. From Barbados, the storm continued across the Caribbean, causing severe damage and casualties in Martinique and St. Lucia, and reaching Puerto Rico and Santo Domingo. The storm ravaged the Caribbean islands for six days, decimating entire towns - even destroying supposedly sturdy stone buildings - ultimately killing over 20,000 people. Taking place at the height of the American Revolutionary War, the storm also killed thousands of sailors from Britain and France who were stationed in the Caribbean. Some historians have placed the event’s death-toll as above 30,000 due to the famine that followed the devastation of the hurricane, which particularly affected Caribbean slaves. The hurricane was last observed on October 20th, southeast of Newfoundland, Canada. Little is known about the particular meterological conditions of the hurricane, as it occured before storm-tracking software had been developed, but modern estimates indicate it was a category five hurricane. The 1780 hurricane remains one of the deadliest on record, and 1780 was the worst hurricane season in Atlantic history, with three storms throughout the year plunging the region into economic decline.
“The most beautiful island in the world has the appearance of a country laid waste by fire, and sword” - British Admiral George Rodney on the hurricane in Barbados
