🦇 snapetober 2021 🦇
hello, my fellow sniends and snovers! the time has come again to celebrate our favorite bat of the dungeons, whump edition! this year, ive decided on two (2) prompt lists! overall there will be 16 “lighthearted” spooky prompts and 15 angst prompts that will alternate every day throughout october. if you choose to only do one list, that’ll give you 2 days to work on your submission, or you can do all of them for a whole month of spooky snape love! 🖤
as always, prompts are open to interpretation. you don’t need to write angst and alternatively, you can make the lighthearted list as angsty as you want. i simply tried to come up with a list that allows both. you will also see a few recycled prompts from last year’s list that i was particularly partial to.
entries for snapetober can be anything - art (in any style), writing (in any perspective, pairing, or length), photosets/edits, headcanon lists, plot bunnies you don’t actually want to write up, etc. etc. you can do as many or as little as you want, combine entries, post them late, and include whomever you want. just keep it snape-centric (and just like last year, the angst doesn’t need to be directed at severus at all!) and remember to tag it as #snapetober or #snapetober2021!
happy whumping!

I think this tendency for violence and bullying was a part of the reason almost nobody doubted Sirius Black actually committed the crimes he went to Azkaban for. If he really was the well liked nice bloke marauder fans make him out to be, he certainly wouldn't have gone to prison without trial, there would have been someone to doubt that story. I could be wrong i haven't read the books in a while but i do believe everyone thought Sirius capable of murder because of how he behaved back in Hogwarts
Sometimes all I can think about is that in a court of law the marauders would’ve gone to prison for harassment, assault, and attempted murder based on the events we heard in the books
What they did is not only morally wrong but it’s criminal too. It annoys me sometimes how JKR reduces it to simple bullying (which is bad on its own) on Pottermore and her interviews because it’s not. They crossed the line repeatedly from the little we were shown. If we were given a book about that era, we would probably get a dozen more reprehensible acts at least.
I’m a Snape stan so it’s baffling when Marauder stans expect me, a mere fan, to ignore or overlook this and it’s mind boggling that they expect it from Severus too.

Severus Snape is such a king. Homeboy was breaking his back carrying the burden of poverty, his childhood trauma, daddy issues, double agency and ptsd and still managed to carry the Harry Potter series.

In AU
Harry:I apologize for invading your privacy. Please consider to restart our class
Snape: wand out
Harry: what
Snape: Unless you can prevent me from your mind without wand
Harry: Why do you give in so easily
Snape: Why not
Harry: Aren't you angry with me
Snape I was
Harry but.
Snape I forgive you
Harry why
Snape : because you apologize to me. You are the first one who does this. No one apologize to me before. They always say I was wrong for holding the grudge although everyone who has wronged me doesn't show an iota of remorse.

I don’t know what’s worse about James Potter:
The fact that he was an arrogant, entitled ass who never once admitted he was wrong
or the fact that he got to move on with his life and go on to bigger and better things while Snape did not.
Snape has to live with what James did to him every single day. He probably still has nightmares about it. He can’t even go to work without see James’s troublemaking reincarnation (which is not Harry’s fault. Obviously. But, still). James has all these fond, cushy memories of school, sneaking out, having fun with friends. And all Snape got were scars, scrapes , bruises and additional fodder for his later PTSD. This is the literal definition of life not being fair. Arrogant prat gets it all, and his victim lives with the consequences, not even an apology or recognition from literally anyone that they hurt him.
And people have the gall to say it was rivalry.

I’m gonna start calling James Potter fans James Apologists tbh. Because tons and tons of those James Apologists, who are not sexual abuse/assault victims like I am, will use “Snape Apologist” as a literal rape joke because they think Snape was obsessed with Lily, stalked and harassed her, felt entitled to her, and only wanted to fuck her.
You know, the funny thing is, James Potter did every single one of those things, and Snape did none of them.
James, while sexually assaulting Snape in Snape’s Worst Memory, Order of the Phoenix, threatens Lily with violence when she attempts to intervene (but not before initially smiling at the sight of her best friend being sexually assaulted. not the point rn tho)
Don’t believe me? Time to pull direct lines from OotP
“Don’t make me hex you, Evans” don’t make me hurt you, evans, for trying to help your friend, who I am sexually assaulting (and don’t tell me it was “just a prank uwu” or “snape deserved it hehe” or “james never actually bullied sneep!” because I’ve been sexually assaulted and emotionally abused and yes. this is sexual assault. and what’s even more horrifying is that this came canonically AFTER the murder attempt where sirius used remus, his disabled friend, as a weapon)
(because tbh if you heard about a girl in the media being forcibly held down in front of a crowd and stripped while people jeer and mock her body, would you call it sexual assault? yes you would. stop “forgetting” (aka denying) that men can be sexually assaulted, raped, sexually abused, and sexually harassed)
“Go out with me, Evans, and I’ll never lay another finger on Snivelly here.” if you don’t date me, I’ll be sexually violent
James also drew L.E. (Lily Evans) in a sketch of a snitch near the end of the OWLs in that same chapter. That snitch has some extremely dark implications. Remember how he pulled one out a moment later and began playing with it? He “nicked it.” Because he could. If he’d been a Seeker, perhaps it would have been understandable. But no. James was a Chaser. Most people draw initials of their crush inside of hearts, but not James Potter. No. He drew it inside of a snitch - an object he took simply because he could.
“But Snivellous called Lily a slur!” Yep. And he apologized immediately, and when she requested she leave him alone forever, he did. Besides for the prophecy business, where he had no way of knowing she was involved, he left her alone. Forever. Also, that slur? It also applies to Snape. He’s Half-Blood. I know a lot of people forget he’s an impoverished mixed kid from a shitty neighborhood, rather than a snooty Pureblood middle-aged man living in a manor with shit tons of maids (seriously why do people always write fics like that why). Same with how mixing up Snape and James is so easy. I know. It’s difficult realizing that James is actually the potential rapist.
Snape didn’t “want to bang Lily.” He wasn’t a friendzoned dudebro who was obsessed with her. If he’d been obsessed with her, he wouldn’t have been able to produce a Patronus, the purest magic there is, in her memory. Obsession is taint. Love is not. Snape loved Lily. And honestly? It is never once stated that it was even romantic love. He never confessed to loving her, implied that he had sexual feelings for her - in all honesty, his love seems to have been entirely platonic. Extremely pure.
“Well Sirius and Harry were also abused but they turned out all daisies and roses and fresh like hand sanitizer!”
ah yes because every single abuse victim is exactly the same, has the same support system (Harry had a very good support system; so did Sirius before Azkaban), is allowed to talk about what they’ve been through (Snape is literally forbidden from talking about anything that he’s been through), and processes things the same exact way and gets help. pfft nah stfu you have literally no idea what you’re talking about and you are hurting abuse victims with the garbage juice that’s leaking from your mouth
people are always saying they want characters who show actual signs and flaws from the abuse they’ve gone through but legit the second they’re presented with one (snape) they victim-blame to extremes and hail the canon abusers and potential rapists as beautiful creatures who can do no wrong and who have 100% perfectly healthy relationships (I can’t see how Lily and James’s relationship was ever healthy at all when he lied to her behind her back constantly (after Snape’s Worst Memory when Harry confronts Sirius and Remus about his very real concerns that James forced Lily into a relationship, Sirius mentions that James never actually stopped bullying people. “Well, she didn’t know much about it, to tell you the truth.” He just made sure Lily didn’t see and find out, sexually harassed her constantly for 7 fucking years, sexually assaulted her best friend in front of her while threatening her with violence…yeah. no. just no.)
“James grew up! He got over it!” Yeah, because he’s the abuser. Of course he got over it. He never had to deal with being a poor mixed kid in a House full of purebloods pressuring him to join what they thought at the time was a political movement, abused at home and “relentlessly bullied” (direct from Remus Lupin’s Pottermore page) for seven years, nonstop. (btw Sirius, while talking about Regulus joining the Death Eaters, mentions that none of them actually knew about anything but the political agenda. If the Purebloods didn’t know, how the hell would Snape?)
Abusers “get over it.” They pretend it didn’t happen. Deny it happened. That’s what happens. It’s happening to me constantly. The abused? Yeah. We don’t get over it. We just don’t.
Gonna quote something riiiight here. “Harry’s questions and how Remus and Sirius chose to answer them are very important. That conversation as a whole shows them victim blaming (eg saying Snape “gave as good as he got”, then hastily switching tactics when Harry points out that they attacked Snape unprovoked bc Sirius said he was bored). It shows them making excuses which Harry calls them out on (saying “he was only fifteen”, aka “boys will be boys”, to which Harry angrily responds “I’m fifteen!”). It shows them contradicting themselves when Harry asks them pointed questions (saying Lily only dated James when he stopped hexing people for the fun of it, but admitting that James continued bullying Snape and hid it from Lily when Harry presses them). Harry isn’t mollified by their excuses, and it disturbs me when readers are. Because everything Remus and Sirius say in that chapter reads like a road map of bullying/sexual violence apologia, and I’ve heard literally every single one of their excuses used to cover for real life offenders. (cont below)
“Including “he’s a family guy” and “a good girl like her wouldn’t marry him if he did something like that”. I’m tired of that attitude, because it very easily switches around to “you should have known better”. Somehow the responsibility always ends up on the partner’s shoulders, as if the partner is omniscient. Well, Lily isn’t omniscient. She couldn’t be aware of something that, as Remus and Sirius said, James kept hidden from her. She. Did. Not. Know. Her decision to date and marry James reflects absolutely nothing about James’ character. Only James’ actions have any reflection on James’ character.” - @psychopompious
“well none of this matters bc snap was an abuser and abused kids and hurt them and was neville’s worst fear snep is evel!”
Actually, Neville was scared of authority figures. Hermione wasn’t terrified of McGonagall, her Boggart - she was scared of failing. Mrs. Weasley wasn’t scared of corpses - she was scared of who the corpses were, what they represented. Lupin wasn’t scared of the moon - he was terrified of what he would become during it. The reason why it was Snape and not, say, his grandmother (who he mentions being a strong possibility after laughing along with the class over his confession to it being Snape), is because Snape had just left the room, and they’d just had a disastrous Potions class. He was fresh in the mind. And even so, Neville easily defeated the Boggart, in a single try, without any difficulty. He obviously wasn’t that scared. We’ve seen Neville scared, a shivering mess. That wasn’t scared. ‘Professor Snape.’ … ‘Professor Snape… hmmm… Neville, I believe you live with your grandmother?’ ‘Er- yes,’ said Neville nervously. ‘But - I don’t want the boggart to turn into her either.’ - Prisoner of Azkaban, page 134-135 (unfortunately it leaves out the part with him laughing with the others and smiling after confessing to his fear)
Slightly off-topic, but tbh McGonagall was worse than Snape. She puts students in mortal danger. She literally denies Neville entrance to the common room after Sirius steals his passwords and breaks in. She denies him safety while a MASS MURDERER is on the loose. And that doesn’t even cover the nasty comments she makes towards students (I’ve got them highlighted in my books at home; once I get back from college to visit I’ll add them in), as well as the time she also put students in danger by sending them into the Forbidden Forest while there’s a dangerous creature murdering unicorns. what the fuck. Also, she and all of the other teachers outright ignored James and his gang bullying, abusing, assaulting, and attempting to murder Snape. Now that. That is extreme. Yet you never hear anyone talk about McGonagall and the other teachers, do you?
Snape was a bully. Yeah. He was a total dick, bullied Harry and was seriously shitty in general. Dude was a piece of shit. (especially the time where he mocked Hermione’s teeth) (however that wasn’t the reason why she shortened them, her dentist parents just hadn’t wanted her to when she asked them the summer before, and tbh Malfoy should have been given the brunt of the blame there, having been the one to do it in the first place, but everyone loves Malfoy who uses slurs left and right so…I love Malfoy I really do but he’s 100x worse than Snape, who used a slur that applied to himself, apologized asap, and then respectfully left Lily alone forever afterward.) But I’ve been through years and years of emotional (and sometimes verbal) abuse and never once has he given me the signals of an abuser. And he never, ever reminded me of my rapist. You know who did?
James Potter. :)
welp anyway I’m done getting my feelings out over my past emotional and sexual abuse and I now have a killer headache so i’m gonna go play sims bye

Reasons why Snily is my brotp and canon is mine now:
The power of the love you have for your friends is a constant theme in the series and I want to apply it to them too.
Found. Family. Trope. Lily's falling out with Petunia + Sev's relationship with his parents = finding that familial connection in each other.
The matching patronuses ultimately show how they saw each other as a part of their herd and found that security in each other.
Harry said Severus loved her, not that he was in love with her.
Just the vibe of them braiding each other's hair and painting each other's nails.
