Why should I retract my claws for you? What do I earn from playing nice? I’ll choke on the cries I leave in my throat. I am not sorry. If I am angry, I will be angry. I will be blinding light I will be rage and shaky hands I will be venom and teary eyes I will not laugh at your jokes I will not tuck my fangs away to smile for you. I will look you dead in the eye and I will spit out teeth that are not mine

say broken glass on the sidewalk. say the honey afterwards for your burning throat. say cold hands, hands that don’t hold on tight enough. say seven times seven equals to the number of stars we’ve counted. maybe it’s true, maybe we forgot, maybe I’ve only ever seen one star in my life. say the penny’s dropped, we both know what happens from here. say footsteps on the path and the fading light, clink, say the key in the lock one last time. say your shadow getting into the car and driving away. say it’s summer, say it’s the heat waves that made you disappear.

I think I’m beginning to understand why those ancient women had to hide in caves. Why our parents and suitors want us to behave properly and predictably. It’s not that they want to protect us; it’s that they fear us.

So I'm curious: why do you like Amma so much? I just finished the book and she mostly made me feel sick to my stomach. Not to say there's anything wrong with being fascinated by her, it's just so foreign to me and your answers are always well thought out and a delight to read so I figured I'd ask. Feel free to ignore this if you want to :)
hahaha i don’t just like amma, i love amma. i worship amma. i cherish and rejoice amma.
first of all, i love amma for what she represents: a new kind of character, a different type of storytelling an option for women and specifically girls to not just be victims, but to be dark things, dark terrible corrupt beings that are victims but of circumstances. is it amma’s fault she killed those girls? maybe partly. but honestly, she did it for attention. she did it so her mother would notice her and not them. she did it because she was raised in a toxic atmosphere with a mother who abused her daughters, one so much that she died. (we won’t get into why i love/hate adora - she’s such a good antagonist but not as good as darling amma)
gillian writes this teenage girl, barely breaking into young adulthood, to be everything society is afraid to recognize that teenage girls can be. she’s reckless, dangerous, sharp, clever, daring, she pushes the limits. she breaks the rules. she uses sex as a weapon, her body as killing factor. she gets what she wants and she’ll do anything she has to to get it.
i love amma because i love amma. amma is a complex character, she’s so beautiful i just??? when she gets camille to do drugs with her and they crash and she’s just bleeding and laughing
or in the bedroom just everything she says and does. amma doesn’t understand how to be in any kind of relationship especially familial that isn’t toxic. she’s bites you and then licks and kisses over the skin, but like her mother. but she means it. i really think she means it. adora does it for the reaction. but i think amma, if she loves you, feels bad. or at least knows she should feel bad.
don’t you understand how complex she is? how double edged. how two sided. what a masterpiece of a character gillian has given to us.
“safer to be feared than loved” because we all know what happens to the preaker/crellin girls when they’re loved.
“a child weaned on poison considers harm a comfort” that’s a good quote ughhh amma was the sole child in adora’s household for a long time. she was born into it a soft baby girl, look what she turned into. she thinks that’s love. see how she treats her lackeys?
“Then you have the control. As long as you don’t go crazy.” amma taught herself how to deal. how to deal with the pain, the fucked up shit. she is the child of abuse. that trauma bloomed a violence inside her as a reaction.
to be going through this kind of awakening, at the same time as what a teenage girl goes through normally, it’s created something new altogether. and that’s why i love her.
i love her i love her i love her.
does she make you sick? yes. that’s the way it’s supposed to be. this girl grew up to understand that hurting someone was a way of showing you love them. that’s gonna fuck someone up.
