Great Mother And I believe in one Earth, the Mother of us all, and in one Womb wherein all men are begotten, and wherein they shall rest, Mystery of Mystery, in Her name BABALON.

An incoherent rage against men and maleness all wrapped up in 40~ pages, the SCUM manifesto is oh so Babalonian. Solanas’ writing is gripped with rage and disgust, calling for the end of the male species and listing all her many grievances with the entire lot of them.
The copy I read had a 40 page introduction to Solanas’ life and perspective - a butch woman on the brink of rage, too early and too late to slip into a movement and raging endlessly by herself. She shot Andy Warhol, she made sure reporters knew she was a writer. She was a survivor of CSA, and she was a sex worker to make it through her university course. Valerie Solanas may not have been religious, but she certainly exemplifies a Babalon perspective and experience.
The foaming-at-the-mouth rage, the determination of SCUM to be a knife in the dark, all of it so wonderfully embodies the wanton destruction Babalon wrecks in Her violent Mysteries. Solanas calls for the end of maleness (though great affection is shown for Queer men & drag queens) and the automation of life for the powerful, SCUM women. Even the automation of reproduction.
The SCUM Manifesto is not for the faint, or those opposed to a great and terrible vision of the future. If you read it, I thoroughly recommend picking up the edition with the introduction.

International Lesbian Day
A natural disclaimer before the text: Babalon is the Goddess that accepts all and rejects none. Facets & Faces of Her’s can be much more nuanced, and in this piece of writing I will be focusing on Babalon as a Lesbian Goddess. This does not assume She is a lesbian in Her entirety, but that She is so multidimensional and many-faceted that She can hold conflicting identities with no contradiction.
The 8th of October is International Lesbian Day (for some reason, marked in my calendar as Lesbian & Sapphic Culture Day). While I was originally not going to write anything, and just enjoy the day basking in Her emanations and the delights of being a lesbian, I was called to write a few words on Her today. I absolutely did bask in Her light, of course, and almost certainly that led to this.
Most of my thoughts lately have been turned towards centring lesbians, women, & trans+ folks in my magical and religious experiences. Part of that sacred practice revolves around being politically literate, particularly in regards to intersectional feminism, trans feminism, queer theory, and anarchism. Babalon does not exist in a spiritual vacuum – to bring Her values into the ‘mundane’ world is for Her to demand your engagement in the politics of liberation. To centre lesbians, women, & trans+ folks in a world where they are oppressed, sidelined, and maligned, is to centre yourself in Babalon’s divine current.
Babalon as a patron of Lesbians, as the Supreme Dyke, Our Lady of Eternal Scissors, is a face of Her firmly removed from the male gaze. She is liberated from the opinions and concerns of men, all men, and cares only for Her many-faceted queer children. Dyke Queen Babalon is an epithet that, moreso than usual, holds butches & femmes beloved, as sacred expressions of Her power. Her magics are for the uplifting of lesbian love, sex, and sexuality. While She may emanate divine radiance for all to dote upon, there is no doubt that part of those divine rays are shared with the lesbian sunset.
When I receive vision of Our Lady of Eternal Scissors, I see Her in robes and veils woven of the sunset. Her crown a wreath of lavenders and violets, studded with the star Gamma Orionis. She is tall, broad, aflame with passion and wielding a labrys fit for one of those divinely-parented Amazons.
This vision is far from sexless: Babalon is unleashed & liberated lust. She knows pleasure and pain, and freely meats out both. She is all leather and a keen whip, the keeper of the kinky lesbian herstories so often sanitised and removed by those that fear liberated sexuality. Particularly when that liberated sexuality is embodied by lesbians. Babalon keeps all of these herstories and more, holding them aloft as a sacred and holy scripture.
In my relationships with Babalon, I have grown into butch dyke fullness. She holds sacred space for my stone butch being, putting no pressure on me to melt. Babalon guides my reading through dyke theory and butch-as-gender ponderings. Through Her, I seek solidarity with my Lesbian, Dyke, & gender-wild sapphic comrades.
On this beloved International Lesbian Day, I will keep my candles and incense burning in love and devotion to the Great Liberating Goddess.
In Nomine Babalon.
