And when asked if she missed her old life and friends:

“You know, I’m counting on the old gang trying to find me. Team Galactic is always recruiting.”

Beasts of Twilight Intermission 1: Cheesy-Pie Story

(Sequel to this story, please read first for context)

Wisdom is the quality of not only possessing knowledge, but knowing how to apply it. An essential quality in the Princess of Hyrule, but of limited use in such an unknown situation like this.

Midna had claimed to have found the hero… and had returned with a child with a wolf head, and a very chatty one at that. Simply asking “Who are you?” had caused the strange child to launch into a complete breathless retelling of her life story.

Needless to say, the Princess was concerned.

“Midna… You are certain this is the one? This is no time for mischief.”

Midna laughed her off, “You think I would do this for a joke? You wound me, oh Twilight Princess!” Midna did a false swoon to punctuate her mockery. “Besides, I saw what happened. That wasn’t the magic of either of our worlds. I think our mutual foe has some new tricks with this curse.”

Fortunately, it sounded like Audie was finally getting to the relevant part of her story…

“-and then they stuck me in a dungeon with and chained me to the floor with this gross, heavy shackle that totally clashes with my dress! But then the floaty girl with the big helmet broke me out, and we came here to see you!”

Story over, Audie fell to the floor, desperately panting for air.

“Oh boy! You’re not dead already, are you?” Midna said, leaning in to prod her with her hair.

Just as suddenly as she fell, Audie sat up straight, ready to listen. “But enough about me, what’s your story?”

The cloaked princess sighed and recounted the tale of how she was forced to surrender the land of Hyrule to the forces of the Twilight King and how the people were now trapped as spirits in the realm of twilight before, at last revealing herself as Princess Zelda.

*DING-DONG!*

Zelda and Midna were both shocked by the sound of a bell ringing out. The noise appeared to come from Audie, who had a strange light emitting orb above her head.

“I know what’s going on!” exclaimed Audie, jumping to her feet. “I’m in a Cheesy-Pie story!”

She meant “Isekai” but that wouldn’t have helped matters. She looked around, waiting for someone to confirm, only to see the other two sharing the same look of utter bafflement. The room fell so silent that even the constant hum of the twilight realm seemed to cut out.

Audie tried to clarify. “You know, the kind of story where an ordinary guy or gal wakes up in a fantasy world and has to be the hero!”

This only confused Midna further.

“Ordinary?!” the Imp blurted out.

“You’re a tiny red wolf that walks and talks like a person, you’re the fantastical one!”

Audie blushed, “Gosh, no one’s called me fantastical before.”

Finally, Zelda’s wisdom could come into play. There was no use dwelling on what was lost in the cursed hero, the important thing was there was someone willing and able to play the part.

“Audie, you are right. We are in need of a hero, and it has to be you.”

Audie’s eyes lit up, “Really? I promise I’ll be the best-est hero ever, princess.”

Midna rolled her eyes. That whole “cheesy-pie” spiel had sapped what little confidence she had. “Why are you suddenly on board?”

Zelda replied, “Practically speaking, Midna, if she has the courage to face the trials and can exist in both light and shadow, she’s the best chance we have now. With your help, she may just pull this off.”

Midna chuckled again, but more bitterly. “Alright, but I’m not doing everything. She better pull her weight.” Audie consciously poked at her own stomach.

Zelda had to see the uneasy companions on their way. “Time has grown short, soon the guard will make his rounds. You must leave here quickly.” As the two visitors left, Zelda wondered if she had left the Kingdom’s fate in good hands… or paws as it were.
