Got a few heifers to vaccinate for brucellosis today. Gonna be here awhile. Brucellosis vaccination of dairy heifers is a federal program to help ensure the safety of our milk. Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease that can cause a severe illness in humans. Thankfully it is very uncommon now in the United States. Thanks to eradication programs such as this. It's getting hot out here in AZ! Remember to watch for signs of heat stress in your fur friends, especially your piggie friends. Look for things like increased breathing rate, decreased appetite. Tremors, blotchy skin and stiffness are signs as well. They need water, good ventilation and shade. Breakfast time at one of the heifer yards we work with! The heifers are fed a mixed ration which is carefully prepared by the nutritionist to contain all the nutrients necessary for optimal health for the girls. The herdsman then mixes the ration according to the nutritionist's instructions and feeds the heifers. Here is an interesting case. This calf was found with a very deep cut on its front foot. Dr Holmes cleaned it up and put drains in to help healing. No one knows where or how it cut itself.
