Materials: Styrofoam sheets, wood glue, Elmer’s glue, hot glue, tape, red ribbon, lace,
First, we built a giant paper airplane using styrofoam foam sheets. We took it to Tropical Park and tried to fly it. Overtime, the plane started to break and was bending at the front, so we repaired it with glue, tape, lace, and ribbon to make it look nicer and fly better. After an hour or so, the plane wouldn’t fly much, no matter how much we tried to fix it. We decided to throw it at other objects and do one last launch off of a hill. There were a lot of people at the park throwing parties, so we did end up having a lot of people watch us parade the airplane around. As we flew it we carried a sign asking people to throw it, but nobody approached us. Our main video is a compilation of moments from us trying to get the plane to fly and the other is a sped-up Timelapse of us making repairs to it.

Viral Interventions - Final Proposal
Digital Drawing
Our sentence was "I flew my jet through a shifting storm of love and got lost", and for the first part of the project we made paper airplanes that contained the sentence and threw them on various locations on campus. Inspired by this idea we decided to create a large paper airplane that we would launch in a park, where there is space, wind and people. The plane might be intentionally constructed with weak glue, so when the plane lands it gets damaged, and we use tape and red and pink lace that we applied glue to in order to fix it. Both beautiful and ugly elements. We might throw the plane in a repetitive and destructive manner, in order to fix it and break it again, representing self destructive behaviors in relationships. Or we could also let different volunteers throw the plane, representing different relationships and how these change a person.

VIRAL INTERVENTIONS: Proposal 4
We have also thought of making a large “paper” airplane using foam or cardboard since both are sturdy but lightweight. This plane would be painted as a notebook paper and we would try to make it fly, throwing it from a Tamiami Hall window onto the field beneath it. On the other hand we could also go to the architecture building, stand on the 3rd floor and throw the plane towards the lawn adjacent to the building.

VIRAL INTERVENTIONS: Proposal 3
This is our 3rd idea for displaying our sentence. It could be in black and white chalk, or we could just do a black and white painting/charcoal drawing. The main image would be of a tornado/thunder storm. Plastered on top of the main image could be paper airplanes that we draw over to blend into the picture of the tornado. They would stand out slightly but mostly blend in. Painted on the sides of the planes would be bright red hearts to symbolize the word "love" in our sentence and they would create a nice pop of color. If it is in chalk, we could do this art on pavement in a public space. If we use charcoal, maybe we could draw it on a large paper and pin it up somewhere. This would also target any passerby's in the area.

VIRAL INTERVENTIONS: Proposal 2
This was our 2nd and most simple idea. This would be somewhat similar to the first part of the group project where we had to make a video. Rather than having the exact text from our sentence written on the airplanes we could have symbols that represent it, such as hearts, clouds, lightning bolts, etc. All of these airplanes would be tied to tree branches in a public area. The first thought we had for where we would do this is the student dorms area since there are a lot of people there, but maybe the nature preserve would be better. The target audience would be a pretty wide group of people. Basically anyone passing by the area.

VIRAL INTERVENTIONS: Proposal 1
This is our first idea for our projects. The sentence is “I flew my jet through a shifting storm of love and got lost”, so we wanted to translate it almost directly to an illustration. We also wanted the final product to reference what we did as a group for our collaborative video, so we included a paper airplane in my proposal. The full image is of the airplane heading into a thunderstorm filled with hearts. It is simple, but it would effectively show what our sentence is. The finished product would be drawn in chalk on the pavement of a public space. Maybe it could even be interactive and we could have some people interacting with the image. The target audience would be other art students if we make this in the parking lot of the art building.

Viral Interventions: Mel Chin QCQ -
1. QUOTE -
“I don’t go about trying to make a science/art project or any political project. I think it has to be riven by some kind of poetry”.
2. COMMENT -
I selected this quote from Mel Chin because it is such a matter of fact statement. Usually hearing that as an artist, this type of quote translates to “every art piece has to have a deeper meaning. It’s something that I completely disagree with. Yes, it’s true that most art works have a meaning behind them, but I think it is ridiculous to say that all of them have to in order to be considered real art. Art can be very aesthetic based at times, and some people prefer to have more neutral pieces. That being said, I don’t think Chin says this to take a stab at people who aren’t poetic with their art.
3. QUESTION -
“Can art without meaning still have meaning?”
I ask this question because I feel like a lot of artists are split on this concept. Some people I know would look at an art piece and interpret it solely based on what the creator’s meaning behind it is. Others like to interpret artwork not for its true meaning, but on what it means to them. Personally, I think art can have meaning, even if the artist who created it doesn’t know it themselves. All art evokes emotion, through color, subject matter, space, etc. What is so interesting about art is how vague it is. I believe that the purpose for art is to make people feel a certain way and it’s ok if they don’t all feel the same.

VIRAL INTERVENTIONS: Group project
Words: Jet, Love, Storm, Lost, Shifting
Sentence: “I flew my jet through a shifting storm of love and got lost”
VIDEO 3:
Materials: Paper, Markers
For our sentence we did what we could with the random words we chose. Jet was a difficult word to work with, but when we thought of the words "lost" and "storm" the 3 of them actually ended up working together well. The sentence "I flew my jet through a shifting storm of love and got lost" doesn't have a very clear meaning, but I'm sure anyone can interpret it interestingly. When it came to displaying it, we created paper airplanes and decided to send them out into the public with our message displayed on them. First we threw them in the student dorms area, then we climbed a parking garage and flew them off of that.
