Deaths in the aftermath of Columbine

Besides the original 13 deaths, Eric's and Dylan's suicide, an additional victim dying this February as result of injuries she suffered from Harris, there is many other deaths and suicides that deserve to be mentioned just as much.

Greg Barnes 17 yrs old (4th May 2000) - suicide by hanging

Greg, one of the survivors who had known the victims well, star of the Columbine basketball team, saw Dave Sanders get shot, had his best friend Matt Ketcher die in the library and Isaiah Shoels, who also died in the library, was his weight lifting partner. He struggled with mental health, developed a drinking problem, broke up with his long-time girlfriend before his suicide and despite being an extraordinary kid with a promising future, he took his own life in his parents garage while listening to Adam's song by blink-182 on repeat. His father later found the body and he was commonly referred to as the 14th victim

Austin Eubanks 37 yrs old (18th May 2019) - heroin overdose

Austin was one of the injured kids in the library, he was hidding under a table with Corey DePooter, who was a good friend of his, Jennifer Doyle and another student when they were approached by the shooters. Austin and Jennifer were left injured and Corey was fatally shot. There is a famous video of him crying after having witnessed his friends horrific death. Upon being medicated for his injuries he described the feeling of euphoria which led him to abuse substances through most of his life despite his continuous attempts at stopping. Developing tolerance for weaker medications he tried various other substances including alchohol, ecstasy and later cocaine. He became a motivational speaker and celebrated 5 years of sobriety in 2016. He was married and had 2 kids, divorcing 4 years later. Despite the ups and downs he was found dead in his home in Steamboat Springs from a heroin overdose.

Carla Hochhalter 48 yrs old (22nd October 1999) - suicide by gunshot

3 years before the massacre Carla's mother and brother in law passed away, in those 3 years she struggled with clinical depression and just as she was finally getting better, Harris had injured her daughter leaving her paralyzed. Carla had to be hospitalized in the following September due to her deteriorating mental state. She was released in October to an outpatient program. Anne managed to move her legs for the first time during a therapy session few days before Carla's suicide. Carla made her decision when she wrote a note apologizing to her family and walked into the Alpha Pawn Shop in Englewood sneaking in 2 bullets. She asked the clerk to check out some handguns and decided to take a closer look at a 38 caliber revolver. While the clerk was filling out paperwork, Carla loaded the gun, shot at a wall, before turning the gun on herself in front of dozen witnesses.

Joseph Stair 27 yrs old (13th September 2007) - suicide by hanging

One of the founders of TCM and a 1998 graduate whose sister Amanda was spared by the shooters in the library. Prior to the shooting he made multiple remarks about blowing up the school and having a hit list. He hung himself with an extension cord in his grandfathers garage where he worked. There is not much information available about him but its important to note his sister stated his suicide had nothing to do with the shooting.

Brandi Jo Malonson (26th December 2006) - missing

Brandi was one of the survivors who fled the cafeteria. A moment before the shooting she had spotted Isaiah Shoels near a locker and invited him to the cafeteria but he refused deciding to go to the library instead. A year after the massacre she was met with two tragedies as Stephanie Hart-Grizzell and Nick Kunselman, two of her friends, were shot and killed in a Subway. Months later another friend took his own life and Brandi was the last person he called. Although she got a job helping elderly she spiraled into crime and drug abuse once her friend introduced her to meth. She was on probation when she went missing a day after Christmas, several unconfirmed conspiracy theories rose up that she was either killed and her body was dumped or she overdosed. Her body was never found. Her sister, Monica, also died young.

Following ones have very little information and its not really confirmed so take it with a grain of salt!

Ben Kuhn 15 yrs old (10th November 2000) - suicide by hanging

A Columbine Sophmore in 2001 committed suicide after calling several people, Brandi Jo Malonson being the last person he called. Brandi unfortunately wasn't near her phone at the time and he ended up going through with it.

Miceal McEwen 23 yrs old (22nd July 2006) - suicide

He was a former coworker of Eric and Dylan at Blackjack Pizza who ended up commiting suicide after allegedly struggling with guilt of having "foreknowledge" of the shooting and a series of tragic events.

Sean Brenner (6th May 1999) - suicide

He was a student attending a nearby school. A week after the Columbine shooting, he allegedly told a friend he felt guilty because he heard a rumor about an attack on Columbine High and never said anything.

Robert Patterson 19 yrs old (29th April 1999) - suicide by hanging

Allegedly knew the shooters and Isaiah, he spent some time in jail and after Columbine he took his own life in his home in Wheat Ridge CO, his mother stating it was because he did not want to go to jail again.

There is of course many more deaths and tragedies related to Columbine that i have not mentioned so i decided to mention the ones that had direct correlation with the massacre, if you have something to add or to correct, please let me know!

Sarto Blais, a graduate from École Polytechnique hung himself 8 months after the massacre, unable to cope with guilt for not stopping Lépine as he was one of the men he ordered to go outside

Following June his parents also committed suicide unable to cope with the loss of their only son
