Jared Making Someone's Day
Tumblr media
It's not often we see actors use sign language, let alone retain learning it years after the show's ending.
I love that Jared made this young fan's day.
I went and downloaded the video so we could get a better view of what he was saying. It's simple, brief, but for this girl? Absolutely heartfelt.
He signed: "Thank you."
But it's enough to make this girl brighten, tear up.
Jared's good people.

I'm pouring a bit of my own experience in this but in my country children under 12 can't enter the maternity (?) ward where they keep the babies because there's danger of them carrying a contagious child disease. I was 9 when my sister was born and had to wait for her to come home 4-5 days later to properly see her. So I'm working on the assumption that Mary gave birth in a hospital and this rule applied for this post.
Daddy brought a polaroid of little Sammy back the night of the first day Mommy was at the hospital. Dean had spent the day nagging Miss Franklin (his babysitter) the whole day about wanting to see Sammy.
When Daddy showed him the photograph, Dean thought Sammy was the most beautiful baby in the world (even if his hair was still covered in slick) and he pestered Daddy the entire night about letting him come along the next day to meet his brother.
John brought him to the hospital and asked the nurse at the main desk to keep a look for him. Dean was giddy. A while later Mommy came down to see him and Dean noticed how her tummy wasn't as swollen anymore.
"Where's Sammy?"
"You can't see him yet, baby." Mary soothed and kissed Dean's forehead.
Dean stomped and pouted all the way home. He stole the new polaroids from Daddy and stared at them for hours under the covers of his bed, pretending he was sleeping. Sammy was crying all the time in the photographs.
Sammy had a little mole on his cheek and Dean was oddly fascinated by it. He wanted to give it a kiss. Maybe then Sammy would stop crying. Did Mommy and Daddy kiss him enough?
He spent another two days at home with his babysitter or at the main desk in the hospital.
He was at home when they finally brought Sammy to him. Dean heard his wails all the way from the garage. He run to the door and waited for his parents to bring Sammy in.
If Dean had any doubt about Sammy being the prettiest baby, it was all gone when he saw Sammy up close.
"Can I hold him? Can I hold him? Please Mommy?"
Mary smiled wryly.
"Don't you want me to calm him down first? So he's not crying?"
"Wanna hold him!"
Mary nodded and guided Dean to the armchair. She put a pillow on his lap and instructed him on how to hold Sammy properly.
Sammy was still crying when she put him on the pillow. Dean didn't care.
"Hiya, Sammy."
At the sound of his voice, Sammy's crying settled a bit as he looked over at Dean. His eyes were a greyish green.
Dean leaned down and landed a soft kiss on Sammy's mole.
Sammy stopped crying. Instead he tried to grab Dean's hair with his tiny hands. Dean let him.
"Well, I will be damned." John exhaled from the door. "He stopped crying."
"Guess he just wanted his big brother." Mary chuckled.
Mommy and Daddy kept talking after that. Dean didn't listen to them though. His whole attention was on Sammy who held onto Dean's hair and fell asleep in his arms. Dean planted another kiss on Sammy's cheek and whispered.
"Sleep well, Sammy. 'm gonna watch over you."

John's Boys, Chapter 1
Relationship(s): Bonham Walker & John Winchester, Abeline Walker/Bonham Walker, Dean Winchester & Sam Winchester
Tags/Warnings: Abandonment, Angst, Heavy Angst, Family Dynamics, Crossover, Alternate Universe- Canon Divergence
Summary:
After John learns the truth of what happened in the nursery that night, he can't just sit by while a monster like that roams the earth. But, he knows he can't drag his boys on a cross-country revenge trip with him. So, he calls on an old friend for a small favor. Bonham knew from the start that this wouldn't be a temporary thing. Too often, he's seen his old army friends that "just need some time" go off the deep end and never return. But he also knows that someone needs to look after John's boys if the worst happens. So he agrees to a small favor.
Written for @angstober Day 21: Abandoned
A/N: Yes this is another Walker/Supernatural crossover that has both too much and not enough thought behind it why do you ask :)))))))

--------------------------
If there was one thing Bonham had learned from his time in the Marines, it was that nine times out of ten, if you got a call from an Old Army Buddy, it was usually a bad sign.
The only thing that was worse: they showed up at your front door without calling first.
When he saw John Winchester’s impala in the drive leading up to the main house, Bonham told Abby not to worry about it and that he’d handle it. It’s not that he thought John was a bad person; far from it. The man had saved his bacon more than a few times overseas. But showing up like this, out of the blue, without so much as a letter between them in years, could only mean something bad was coming.
He’d heard things through the grapevine about other members of their troop. Men disappearing to their old friends’ apartments without a note to their wives. Men leaving suicide notes in voicemails that their families wouldn’t hear until months later. Men just disappearing and relying on their friends to keep the secret.
When Bonham saw the carseats in the back of the car, his stomach dropped. This couldn’t be anything good.
“She’s dead, Bonham.” John told him. “She’s dead. The house is gone. And I can’t- I can’t just sit here when the bastard that killed her is still out there.”
“I know.” He didn’t imagine he'd be thinking differently if Abby had been taken from him like that. “But you’ve got two boys to look after. You need to think about them.”
“I’m trying to think about them,” John insisted. “I can’t- I can’t let them live in a world with that monster in it.”
“I know, John. But you gotta let the cops do their jobs. That’s what we pay taxes for. Just- You can stay here if you need a place but-”
“But I gotta get back on my feet?” John chuckled darkly. “I can’t, Bon. I-I can’t. The things I’ve seen, the things I know…. I can’t just let it go, I can’t. But…..” he sighed. “But I know I can’t bring the boys down with me.”
“John-”
“You don’t have to say yes. I’ve got other people I can ask-”
“John, you need help.”
“Why the hell do you think I’m here?!” John snapped. “I need- I need them to be safe. But I need to handle this myself and I can’t- I can’t take them with me. They don’t deserve to get pulled into this mess.”
“They don’t deserve their father to abandon them either.”
“I’m not abandoning them!” John started pacing. “I just- I need time. I know what I’m doing, I just need time. A year, maybe less. Hopefully less.”
Bonham let him get the energy out.
He shouldn’t agree to this. John needed help, not a revenge mission. Maybe he should agree on the condition John went to a therapist instead of a gun shop.
But John wouldn’t agree with it. And that wasn’t the only person he had to talk to, and he knew what Abby would say.
“Let me run it by my wife,” he said eventually. “Why don’t you bring the boys inside and we can talk?”
John’s shoulders relaxed. “Alright. Just give me a minute.”
—-----------
“Are we really thinking about this?” Abby asked him quietly. They’d retreated to the kitchen to talk while John watched his boys in the living room.
“I don’t agree with it either, Abby, but I don’t know what he’ll do if we don’t. Those boys need a home and if John won’t give it to them….”
Abby sighed. “I know, Bon, but we just had a boy ourselves in case you forgot and this hasn’t exactly been our best year….” She nervously twisted a dish towel in her hand and needlessly cleaned the counter. “How long did he say? A year?”
“He’s gonna aim for less than that but yes. But Abby….” He put a hand on her shoulder. “We have to be ready for it to be longer than that.”
She sighed and leaned into him. “I want to say yes. You know that.”
“I know.” Bonham kissed the top of his head. “If you think we can handle it, I can go buy another crib today.”
She tilted her head up for a kiss. “...Tell him we can do it. For one year. After that, he’s on his own.”
Bonham kissed her softly. “Alright. Make me a list of things we need for them and we can be set up in time for dinner.”
Abby hummed. “Find out what Dean’s favorite is and see if John will join us, would you?”
“Of course.”
—----------------
“But why do we have to stay here? Why can’t I go with you? I can help!”
John stared at his oldest son. How was he supposed to explain this to someone who wasn’t even old enough for kindergarten yet? “Dean…. This is something I have to do alone. And I need you to look after Sammy until I’m done.”
Dean swallowed hard and nodded tearfully. “O-Okay. When’re you gonna be done?”
John didn’t have an answer, so he made up one. “I’ll be back in time for your next birthday, okay? Be good for Bonham and Abby and look after Sammy for me, okay?”
Dean nodded and rubbed his eyes. “Okay. I-I can do that.” He bit his lip, then threw himself at John’s leg in a hug. “Come back soon, okay?”
“I will,” John lied. “Be good, okay?”
Dean nodded furiously, still not letting go of him. “I love you, Daddy.”
“I love you too, Dean. I love you too.”
John hugged him one last time, then got back in his car and drove away, leaving his sons in the rearview mirror.
He just needed to kill this demon. Once the demon was dead, they could be a safe, happy family again.
He wasn’t abandoning them, he just needed time.

Lend a Paw
Relationship(s): Cordell Walker & Original Dog Character(s)
Tags/Warnings: Fluff, Stray Dog, Animal Shelter, Adoption
Summary: Cordell finds a lost dog on the ranch and makes a new friend
Written for @flufftober Day 20: Paw
Taglist: @theladywyn, @ihavepointysticks, @klaatu51, @itsjessiegirl1, @neptunium134
-------------
Cordell was out for his morning jog when he heard the whimpering. He knew his father had traps around the ranch to keep pests from breaking in and causing problems around the ranch, but it wasn’t uncommon for a stray or a lost pet to get caught in one. This had only increased when Bonham started adding proper predator traps after they caught a coyote near the stables. Hoping he was hearing a raccoon and not some poor housepet, he followed the sound until he found the source.
He sighed when he saw a german shepherd with its paw caught in a foothold trap. “Dammit….”
He cautiously approached the dog. He knew it would be smarter to call animal control or at least Liam for help, but he didn’t want the poor thing to be stuck there for longer than they had to be. “Hey, buddy, I’m a friend,” he said gently, crouching near the trap. “I’m gonna get you out of that, you’re not gonna bite me, and if you feel up to it I’ll take you to a vet, okay?”
The dog watched him warily but didn’t growl or bare his teeth, which Cordell took as a win. “There we go…. Nice and easy…”
He carefully undid the latch to release the dog’s paw and waited to see if the dog would bolt. When he didn’t, Cordell carefully reached out and picked up the docile dog. “We’re just gonna get that paw looked at and see if you’ve got a home to get back to.” He didn’t see a collar but given how calm the dog was, Cordell figured he was probably a pet or at least hung around a residential area.
He stopped by the house and got a towel to wrap the dog’s bloody paw in before taking him to his truck and heading for the local vet. “There we go, nice and easy,” he said gently as he pulled out of the drive. “Don’t worry; we’ll get you home soon.”
—------
The vet was able to take care of the dog’s paw no problem, but wasn’t able to find a microchip. So, Cordell drove the guy to a local animal shelter that would be able to take care of him until he could find a home of his own.
As he pulled into the parking lot, the dog started whining again and something in his eyes told Cordell it had nothing to do with his paw. “What, you been here before?” he asked. “Don’t worry, they won’t turn you away just for the bum paw. They’re good people.”
The dog still didn’t seem happy about going inside but didn’t fight Cordell when he picked him up and carried him inside.
After waiting a few minutes for someone to answer his bell call at the front desk, Cordell found out why the boy was so reluctant to come inside.
“Oh, there’s our escape artist.” Mindy, one of the staff members, took the dog off his hands. “He gets out a lot. Thanks for taking care of him; we’ll handle it from here.”
Cordell decided to follow her into the back where the kennels were, just to find out a little more. “Is he trying to go somewhere?”
Mindy nodded. “I imagine so. He only ended up here because his owner couldn’t take care of him anymore. He’s been here for a year and the poor guy keeps trying to go back.”
“What’s his story?”
“Veteran dog that got adopted by his army trainer when they both retired. They were together for years, but then the owner got hit with a bad cancer diagnosis and the family just didn’t have the resources to handle both of them. The Colonel here really is a good dog but he misses his home and he hasn’t been adopted because he’s more than a lot of people are willing to take on long term. He’s older, not good with kids, and probably has whatever the dog equivalent of PTSD is. We’ve been trying but….” Mindy shrugged and stopped at an empty stall. “There’s only so much we can do. We want to put him in a home that can handle him.”
Cordell watched as Mindy got Colonel settled in his stall. “You’re welcome to hang out for a bit if you want,” she said. “Just make sure you completely close the door when you leave; he’s not the only escape artist we got.”
As she walked back down the hall, Cordell found himself kneeling next to the door to Colonel’s stall. “Well, can’t say I blame you for wanting out of this place,” he muttered. It was a nice shelter, but not the ideal place to live for a year. “Did you have fun at the ranch? Before you got caught in the trap, I mean.”
Colonel yipped and his tail wagged slowly.
Cordell smiled. “Yeah, it’s a nice place. Lots of room to run around, and it’s real quiet at night. Especially now that the kids have moved out….”
Colonel bumped his nose against the bars of his door and Cordell pet him gently. “Yeah, I know. Sucks when the people you love just… go. But that’s the way life is sometimes. And we can always meet new people….”
Colonel looked at him and licked his lips.
Cordell listened to what he just said and stood up quickly. “Wait here, Colonel.” He jogged back to the front, careful to close the door completely behind him, and caught Mindy just as she was about to leave the desk. “How do I adopt a dog?”
She smiled at him. “Let’s talk in my office….”
One Month Later…..
Cordell dashed down the dirt trail he used for his morning runs with Colonel hot on his heels. “Come on, boy!” he whooped. “If we beat our record, I’ll give you some bacon!”
He would give Colonel bacon regardless, but it was always good to give incentive.
Colonel barked and picked up speed, coming up right next to Cordell as they rounded the final bend to the farmhouse. They kept up that speed until they reached the porch, when Cordell finally let himself take a breath. “Not bad, buddy. We made it!” He scratched Colonel’s head while he opened the door.
Once they were inside the air conditioned house, Cordell made a beeline for the kitchen. He filled Colonel’s water bowl before starting their breakfast. Bacon and eggs for Cordell, and bacon and kibble for Colonel.
“There we go,” he said once their food was ready, picking off a piece of bacon for Colonel and handing it down for him. “Good boy,” he praised, scratching his head before getting a plate down for himself.
As they silently ate their breakfast, Cordell no longer felt that sting of loneliness.
This was going to be a good day, he just knew it.

“Who are you?” The boy kneeling at the foot of Sam’s bed, hands clasped, whips his head around, staring straight at Sam, unblinking.
Sam should be freaking out right now, seriously freaking out, but instead, he feels strange—unnaturally calm. The Trials have been affecting him in all sorts of ways, so why not this too? He doesn’t even think to press his thumb into his palm.
“Where’s my dad? Where’s Dean?”
“Don’t worry,” Sam says softly. “They’ll be back soon.”
The boy’s face falls. “Dad’s always leaving.”
“I know.” Sam swallows hard, trying to push down the lump in his throat. “But he’ll . . . he’ll come back. I promise.”
“Yeah?” His voice is quiet, uncertain.
“Yeah.” Sam crouches to bring himself to eye level with the boy. Gently, he nods toward an object on the bed. “Whatcha have there, kiddo?”
He picks it up and holds it out to Sam. The sight of it makes Sam’s hands tremble - it’s a comic book. His fingers make contact, familiar feel of time-softened paper, musty scent catching in his nostrils. Tangible. Sam remembers picking it out of the second-hand bin in the comic store, carrying it back to the motel room in his clammy little hands, the thrill of anticipation as he held onto Dean’s promise to read it to him later that night.
“My brother bought it for me.”
“Yeah.” Sam breathes out, staring down at it, still trembling. Carefully he thumbs it open, instinctively flipping to the right page. Sir Galahad. Kneeling. His stomach lurches. He forces his eyes away, meeting the identical hazel-brown pair staring back at him.
“I don’t like that one. It makes me feel bad.” He looks so small.
“Why do we still have it then?” Sam asks, the words coming out blunter than he’d intended.
“I don’t know. I look at it when they are gone sometimes. I think . . . I think maybe the way it makes me feel . . . I think maybe that’s why they leave.” A tear tracks down Sam’s face. He’s not sure which one. “That’s why I was praying.”
“I used to do that too,” Sam says, voice cracking.
“Did it work?” he looks up, helpless expression.
“Sometimes,” Sam replies, trying to force the ghost of a smile. “For a little while.”
He nods. Sam gingerly folds the comic closed, holds it back out. He takes it, clasping it to his chest.
“I’m gonna fix it.”
“You are?” god the desperation is almost too much to bear.
“Yeah.” that same desperation.
“How?”
By burning ourselves up from the inside.
“I’m going on a quest.”
