Mother Puss Bucket
So, the Ghostbusters reboot in nearly upon us, and if you haven’t been stuck in the Ecto Containment System, you will be aware of the hate that this film has been getting. And according to a bunch of fanboys and femenists, you can’t hate this film without being sexist. Even today, the films producer basically said the haters are Donald Trump supporters.
Now let me start off by telling you, I think everything that has come out about this film has sucked, and I am not a sexist! In fact I would love to see a remake of Silence of the Lambs with Ruth Wilson as Hannibal Lecter, she would be so f##king awesome in that role! (I also hate Trump encase you wondered)
Now of course we can’t deny that sexism isn’t playing a role in the hate from a select number of people. That is one of the unfortunate things about the world we live in. It’s the same with racism. Remember the complaints about a black Stormtrooper when the first Force Awakens trailer was released? It’s pathetic! Sexism and racism should never be used to hate upon a film or anything else for that matter, but that doesn’t mean that these film should be immune to it either just because it features a team of women Ghostusters. If we are hoping for a world of equality, it has to be actual equality, ie, we are all treated the same.
Anyway, if you haven’t seen the trailer yet, go and check it out before reading on and then I will tell you why it sucked, go on, i’ll wait for you - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3ugHP-yZXw
A LITTLE HISTORY
Ghostbusters 3 has been in developement hell for maybe 20 years. Bill Murray never wanted to do it, due to not enjoying the second film (I actually liked the second film) As time went on and the cast got older, the plan was to do a passing of the torch film, having the older guys teaching a new team, which was apparently to be made up of men and women. This was the idea fans wanted, a proper sequel. To be honest, the film probably still wouldn’t have been any good compared to the originals, but at least it would have had slightly more credibility.
Unfortunately the passing of Harold Ramis (R.I.P) stopped anything along those lines and a reboot was planned. Paul Fieg was announced as director, a man not exactly known for making classics, and here we are.
PRODUCTION
The main problem for real fans of the film is not the female cast, it’s the word reboot. I tried to keep an open mind throughout the production, as pictures were released, but lets be honest, nothing good was shown to us. The original Ecto 1 is an iconic car, and the proton packs are iconic movie props. The new car and pack just look terrible.
There was also talk from Dan Akroyd of another, all male reboot. Sorry Dan, we don’t wany any reboot, whether it’s a team of women, men, mix of both, or chimps from out space. Stop with the reboots! It’s time to sober up and stop drinking your over priced vodka...
THE TRAILER
And that brings us to the trailer. Now, this trailer had something to prove. As I said earlier, there was always go to be a bit of sexist hate, so this trailer really needed to be good, well, not even good, just not suck, and oh boy did it suck. It could possibly be the suckiest trailer that ever sucked (the dislikes on youtube confirm that it is)
The first 30 seconds were actually promising. Showing a few clips from the classic film, along with some graffiti of the Ghostbusters logo in a subway, whilst a spooky version of the iconic theme song was played slow on the piano.
And then we get a look at the Ghostbusters themselves, in what appears to be a remake of the library scene from the first film. All seems ok, until we get a look at the ghost. “WTF is that” is all that really springs to mind. That ghost is without a doubt some of the worst CGI I have ever seen, it looks so out of place it’s redicoulous. It would look more at home in a Scooby Doo film. Can anyone explain how the ghosts in a 30 year old film looks more real?
And what does this ghost do? Scare them like in the original? No! It quite literally throws up over one of them (in the ghosts deffence it was probably sick from being in a shit film). So immediately we are shown what sort of ‘humour’ this film is going to have, terrible slap stick :-( One of the reasons the first film worked so well, and it went on to become a classic was because everything was played straight and serious. If your going to remake a classic, perhaps it’s best to learn from that classic.
After that we get some terrbly acted bit about how terrible that stuff is to wash out and a horrible version of the theme starts to play which goes on throughout the trailer. We then get a little intro to each of the new team memebers, and the lack of chemisty between them all is astonishing, And again, they are trying so desperately to be funny and it just isn’t working.
Next up is our look at the car and the four new Ghostbusters standing next to it saying “lets go”. Another terribly acted bit that is again trying to hard to be funny.
The trailer then carriers on with varous clips of ghosts running around New York, and we even get a glimpse of Slimer, but it just all looks really bad, just like the ghost we saw at the beginning. The Ghostbusters Video Game looks more realistic (I’ll mention that again later)
And as we near the end of the trailer we get to what is probably the worse part where Melissa McCarthy is possesed by a ghost and it is slapped out of her.by Leslie Jones who seems to be potraying the worst sterotypical black character in years, but I’ll go into that issue in a little more detail in a bit.
So yes, you can see why that sucked and non of it was to do with sexism, it was just f##king crap. Replace the women with four guys and it would still suck!!
And now watch this version where the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man himself reacts to the trailer - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFcNhrNf6hQ
BLACK
One of the few things that the first two films get complaints over is the treatment of Winston (Ernie Hudson). Winston was of course the fourth Ghostbuster and just happened to be black. He wasn’t on the film poster (that annoyed me, even as a kid) and the cover for the new 4K bluray has his face covered by the logo.
Now wether that is because he is black is a long discussion for anothing time, and that can partly be put down to it being made in a different time I suppose (not saying it’s justified, just saying things were different back then). The equality with black actors has been a big topic in Hollywood over the last year, even effecting The Academy Awards.
It’s because of all this, that it makes it suprising that in 2016, the only black character in the reboot, is again, not one of the original team, she joins them later on. She is also one of the most sterotypical black characters I have seen in years. It’s actually pretty insulting and I am suprised it hasn’t caused more of a fuss.
WHAT THEY SHOULD HAVE DONE
Personally I think they should have done nothing. The Ghostbusters franchise has continued in other formats via a videogame and comics, both of which have been very good at capturing the feel and humour of the originals.
If they really wanted to do a film, they should have went with the passing of the torch plot, even after the sad passing of Harold Ramis. There is no reason Ray and Winston couldn’t have taught the new team. Maybe Egon died or retired and moved away.
A few years ago they made a video game for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. This game was set 2 years after the second film and featured most of the original cast returing to do the voices, including Bill Murray! It’s was not only a great game but it also had a great plot. I think it would have been cool if they made a CGI animated film, and took the vocal tracks from this game. The surviving cast could have done more work on it if needed. I really recommend checking out this game if you haven’t done so.
THE END
So that covers all of my thoughts on the Ghostbusters Reboot. I’ve been a Ghostbusters fan since I can remember, I’ve always wanted another sequel, but this new film makes me sick to my stomach.
Do yourself a favour, instead of wasting money on this trash, go online and get the video game mentoned above, or some of the comics from IDW. You will not be disappointed with those, and if you are wondering, the comics introduced some great female busters.
Sony have started playing a desperate, dirty game. Comments like the ones made by the films producer that I mentioned in the beginning are just unsulting. They made a shit film, and they need to wake up to that.
I have no dount the film will flop, and that will be a good thing. Hollywood needs to learn that these remakes need to stop!!
And remember it’s not sexist to hate this shit!!!!
