Something I found so interesting in Heavenly Tyrant is how ALL of the changes to women's rights are made or suggested by Zetian, not Qin Zheng.

Women serving as Iron Widows? That's Zetian's idea to give women opportunities into power, and Qin Zheng puts it forward because they need more pilots. Zetian using male concubines to pilot on the battle field? That's her trying to prove that women can fight equal to men, and Qin Zheng allows it because he needs Zetian to keep the imperial presence on the border. Flowerpot feet being banned? Qin Zheng bans it but Zetian is the one who actually enforces it. Women being educated? Qin Zheng allows it but it's Zetian who makes him get women into his court, into positions as advisors.

And despite it all, Qin Zheng forces Zetians ideas to be softened so that they more acceptable to him. The Iron Widows are conscripted so that it's military duty, not independent free will of the women. He only allows Zetian to pilot with another man if he's castrated. The moment Zetian runs away, he says he "understands" why people flowerpot feet exist and says that he wants to break her legs. The moment Zetian runs he refers to the women in his court as "her precious lady friends" and plans to hold them hostage.

Qin Zheng's perception of women is crazy! Their union is symbolised by the hammer and scythe, the communist union of workers and farmers joining forces for freedom, and Zetian is supposedly his equal. She's his equal, but she must cover her face. She's his equal, but she must sit behind a curtain of beads. She's his equal, but she's not allowed to talk to other men. She's his equal but he doesnt say her name until about 450 pages in. She's his equal but by the epilogue of the book when she escapes he wants to disable and abuse her.

The fact that Qin Zheng goes through all this effort to say that a woman is his equal and that women are equals, yet immediately assumes that his and Zetian's baby is a son, because how could their child be the weaker gender?

Oh Xiran Jay Zhao the gigabrained mastermind you are, the fucking layers to this guy. A character like Qin Zheng's is so difficult to pull off and they fucking nailed it.
