MASON:
the leaves had all changed color from their usual green to yellow and red , sun high up in the sky shining brightly behind the cover of passing clouds . it was beautiful out which is precisely why mason wanders around the square , sketchbook in hand , searching for the perfect subject to sit down and begin drawing . he had the day off , his mother was at work , and his siblings were at school so he had a rare moment to himself . he comes to a stop when he notices avery a few feet away looking almost as if he were glowing underneath the sunlight , the corners of his lips twitching up in the smallest of smiles . he can’t believe that someone can look so ethereal even when doing the most mundane things . mason realizes he’d been blatantly staring and his cheeks darken slightly from embarrassment , hues glancing around to make sure no one had witnessed it . the male sucks in a breath before going over and sitting down slowly as not to startle him . ❛ the weather is nice , right ? i’m surprised more people aren’t enjoying it . ❜ he muses aloud , fingertips drumming lightly against the cover of his book while his gaze drifts around to their surroundings .
the sudden presence sliding into view drew avery’s attention away from the manga in hand. his muscles that had threatened to tense at the sudden appearance ended up easing even more at the sight of mason. a sleepy smile curled at the elder’s lips as he shut his story gently, not bothering to save his place. “it’s beautiful,” avery agreed. his heavy gaze studied the younger’s face curiously as he seemed to look around. “the weather,” he back tracked after a moment, eyes flickering away. his hands had lifted from his book to sign as he spoke, a habit more han necessity at the moment. his outer ear gear was in as thus he could hear the other’s words without any issue, but the movements remained. “they may have gone to the park,” he suggested, placing his hands down after he finished signing. he smoothed them over the back of his manga, glancing up at the other after a moment. he was somewhat curious as to what drew the other to join him, but couldn’t bring himself to voice the question.

MASON | @lostbcy location: beauhart square | time: evening
it wasn’t uncommon, on empty evenings where the weather remained comforting for avery to spend some of his time in the town square. whether he decided to people watch or read, he would settle himself on a bench armed with a book and to-go cup filled with the day’s choice of drink. it was a matter of getting fresh air and allowing himself a bit of a change in pace outside of his home and place of work. today, he was taking his time to look through a manga he’d found, an interesting comic about a delinquint who decided to be a normal school girl after getting expelled from her last for fighting. it was refreshing and he easily found himself laughing lowly at the contents as he enjoyed the last of the sunlight for the day. the nice thing about the square is folks who were around often were too caught up in their own lives to pay attention to anyone else. they were either busy shopping or heading to work. no one would think to find some peace in the middle of the square - not when there was a perfectly good park in beauhart. thus, avery’s choice of spot was oddly enough perfect for whatever he desired to accomplish. rarely was he pointed out or bothered and simply was left to his own whims.

GRACE:
there’s a loud gasp of relief as her her eyes landed on the small cat snuggled into the other’s pocket. the relief that washed through her worked to slow her pounding heartbeat. “ oh my god, yang ! “ she’s blurting out running up to avery’s side, eyes wide. it’s funny, her jumping to greet the lost kitten before her friend who must have found him. “ oh - i mean yes ! “ she flushes a small color as she finally looks back up to avery, she’s glad it’s one of her friends that found him instead of a stranger, “ sorry, i just got so scared … if i didn’t bring him home back to ying … who knows what would have happened , “ she mutters nervously with a shake of her head. she doesn’t make moves to move the cat, for it looked quite comfortable snuggled to the others. “ you little escape artist , “ she coos softly to the cat as she instead just leans forward to scratch at his ear. “ where did you find him ? i can’t imagine he could have gotten too far with those little legs … “
avery’s lazy gaze studied the relief on his friend’s face without any hint of amusement. if it wasn’t for the fear that the other had held, perhaps he would have found the whole event to be a bit comical. “why are you apologizing,” he questioned, not understanding why she would do so over being scared. “mm, ying would have been just as upset as you were,” he agreed, glancing down at the black cat in his hoodie with a frown. hm. he didn’t seem at all bothered that he had worried grace so much, though avery supposed that was a cat for you. “i wouldn’t be surprised if yang just thought he’d take himself for a walk before returning back home. he seemed as though he was just looking at the sights when i found him.” the elder commented, tucking a hand into the pocket of his sweatshirt to curl under the black cat’s body. he lifted the cat out with practiced ease before presenting him to grace. “here’s your delinquint, ma’am. try not to let him slip away from you again,” he joked, eyes soft as they looked down at the animal who hung limply on his hand and wrist. “i think he may have found a short cut, actually. i found him a few blocks over. he’s small enough to get through the tiniest of crevaces i suppose.”

GRACE:
“ yaanng ! “ there’s a wild panic in grace’s eyes as she skids out of the front of her apartment complex. her right hand shakes the a metal bowl, the clinking of cat food as it hits the sides. she had just left the door open for two seconds … how did the tiny kitten manage to make a run for it in the short amount of time ? her heart felt like it was beating a mile a minute as she walked eyes hastily raking all corners of the buildings around her where the cat might have run off to. “ e - excuse me - “ she calls out, voice raised ( well, as much as grace can raise it ), “ you haven’t, um… seen a small black cat walking around right ? “
he’d come across the kitten by chance, really. it was skill that he managed to catch sight of the small animal. really, avery had a sort of bond with animals and he often spent much of his time looking for them in his everyday life rather than paying attention to things that were probably more important. so, after finding the kitten slinking around with wonder written across its tiny face, he came to the conclusion that it must be fate. “c’mon boo,” he mumbled, crouching down and holding out a lazy hand. huh. actually, as the small cat approached, avery came to the realization that he’d met the cat before. “ah,” he mumbled, watching as yang weaved around his legs. “you know you’re not allowed out unless i’m kidnapping you for the day.” the man chiasted, picking the small thing up by its scruff. yang simply purred at him to which he smiled in return before tucking the kitten into his sweatshirt. well, he needed to go a bit out of his way, but at least he got to cuddle the cat so returning the small thing would be worth the trouble. plus, he had a feeling yang wasn’t let out for a walk freely. chances were, grace was loooking for the small thing. he turned a corner after a bit of walking just to see the back of grace’s head as she seemed to be asking around for anyone who had seen her little escap artist. “excuse me, miss. does this little delinquint belong to you??” he called out in his usual drawl, approaching the younger with his usual lazy gait. yang’s front legs were hanging out of the front of avery’s hoodie along with the cats head. the small animal looked more than content with the position, as did the tall man.

SAVANNAH:
savannah was hardly late for anything, so the fact that she’d managed to lose track of time organizing her knitting supplies bin was quite embarrassing. she had the day off and desperately needed something to distract her of her own thoughts or she was sure she’d lose her mind. she’d promised avery that she would meet with him a little later in the afternoon at the daily grind to discuss the novel given at their last book club meeting, one that she wasn’t really fond of, but still couldn’t seem to put down. when she looked down at her watch she was already fifteen minutes late, so she rushed to slip into a pair of her many leather loafers and a cardigan to match before picking up her keys and purse and heading out the door. within minutes, savannah had arrived and quickly glanced around for avery. luckily, he hadn’t arrived yet, so she ordered herself a coffee and waited patiently for him to join her.
avery was often late to things. it had become an unfortunate habit over the years, yet those who knew him had already come to expect it. in fact, they knew to expect him either out of the blue, quite early or incredibly late. it was the dreamy quality of his personality that pulled him away from time and left him running at a different speed compared to others. still, it was a lucky thing that many of his acquintances - his friends ?? - seemed to accept this unfortunate quirk. it was pure chance that it was a day he was running late, his gaze a bit hazier and his headgear missing from the spots around and above his ears. hopefully savannah wouldn’t mind. upon his arrival, he found her already with a coffee and lifted his hand to check the time on his watch. huh. “sorry, running later than usual,” was his greeting as he slid into the seat across from his book club friend. “how are you doing??” he questioned her as he settled his spine against the back of the chair. his dark, dreamy gaze focused solely on her lips as the sound around him fell to his deafness by his own choice for the day.

SOPHIE:
That took her by momentary surprise, but she recovered quick enough with a shake of her head and small laugh that did nothing but shake her shoulders. “Well. I think you’ve definitely brought the halloween spirit in the form of sugary snacks.” She followed his line of sight, her own eyes scanning over all the options with increasing hunger. It all looked so good, she wasn’t even sure what she wanted anymore. “I do like an apple,” she mused, tracing the path of the waved apple with some thought. “Okay,” she starts, bites her lip in second thought before nodding to herself. “Okay. Right. I’ll take a caramel apple please. And I may be back around later for one of those cookies.”
“the boss didn’t seem to mind so i count it as a win,” he murmured, rubbing idly at his temple. he held back a wince as he adjusted the cat ears while she surveyed the items. he was pretty close to just flinging them away and pretending he never chose to wear the stpid accessory. then again, he’d still have the face paint on and then he may look even odder - not that he cared if it happened. “caramel apple, a good choice,” he hummed. he swept his hand over the ones that were all nice and wrapped up in the display. “go ahead and pick it yourself. well, we won’t be going anywhere soon so you’ll have plenty of time to swing back around.”

VIVIAN:
vivian was really feeling all types of powerful. halloween was her favorite holiday and fall being her favorite time of year. its probably the spooky air or maybe it feels like she isn’t being stared at. vivian had decided she was going to get avery out of his house and out into the public. it had taken her awhile for her to convince him but when she had it felt like sweet victory standing at the palm reading stand waiting for the other man.
when he slid next to her, she yelped out in surprise. from the front her outfit didn’t look anything different from the normal gothic chic she wore. it was a simple black dress but her makeup was more dramatic then usual. lots of purple highlights and she was holding a witch hat. obviously, she was a witch.
“ holy fucking shit !! “ she exclaimed and placed a hand over her chest. “ damn avery..you got me. ”
“in my defence,” he began. “i didn’t actually think that would work.” lifting a hand, he reached out to take the witch hat in her hand and inspect it with a dreamy gaze. “i almost wish you went the witch cloak route rather than a hat.” he mused before turning his gaze to her face. “nice make-up, though.” he commented, sticking the hat ontop of his own head. it covered only one of the cat ears on his head and left the accessory dangerously crooked. no doubt, it would not stay on his head should he make any sudden movements - not that such a thing was much of a problem seeing as he was about as quick as a sloth when it came to most things. “you been waiting long??”

JUDE:
maybe it was REFLECTIVE more of jude’s stance on what having fun entailed that he found himself taking LONGER sips of the alcohol stored in his flask , located snug in the back pocket of his pants. he should feel some sense of shame for his slight public drinking habit with children running around so freely , but jude was growing RESTLESS when his heavy flirting with a cute boy around his age took a turn for the less desirable upon realization that his cat costume veered more toward an odd furry fetishization than an appeal to look cute. jude bit his tongue , made an excuse , and moved as fast he could in his leather pants which SUDDENLY felt constricting from the blood rush to his head. he could only imagine where that could have led , when he recognizes avery looking particularly UNIMPRESSED with his adorned cat ears. a shiver shakes through him , a phantom touch leaving goosebumps on his arms in its wake as jude prays to his lucky stars that avery’s costume seems more forced than willingly furry. ❝ hey there , kitty kitty. ❞ jude offers as a greeting once his feet carry him over to the peau d’amour food stall. it’s almost IMMEDIATE that a smile pulls at his lips , leaning one hand on the table and cocking his head in a playful manner. ❝ someone looks like they’re not having a good time. do you need a nice belly rub ?? maybe some warm milk ?? ❞ his tone is laced in a good-natured teasing as he grins at avery. maybe some poorly made jokes would lift whatever prickly mood he found himself in. although , jude feels as though he would come off the same if his job had him in charge of a food stall during a festival meant for the town.
avery’s nose scrunched up, brows furrowing as he attempted to gnaw at a rounded side of his apple. due to his choice of puny little fangs that weren’t well stuck to his own canines, he was really struggling a lot more than he’d expected. his attention was almost purely centered on grinding his lower teeth past the first layer of sweet candy. he’d just managed to do so, a satisfying crunch!! vibrating through his teeth, when jude’s figure finally drew his dark gaze. his bottom teeth dug into the apple releasing a flood of sweet juice that flew past his bottom lip and trailed down his chin. as the younger spoke of belly rubs and warm milk, avery twisted his hold on his treat and ominously ( finally ) broke off a chunk of candied apple. the elder’s lazy gaze blinked at the younger’s clearly playful demeanor as he chewed slowly on his treat. well, despite the heavy effort it took to get a piece of it, he was supremely satisfied with how it tasted. no doubt, to the other who was looking at him, he almost looked like the cat that got the cream. once he’d swallowed his bite, avery swept his tongue over his bottom lip, ignoring the slight mess on his chin for the moment in turn for finally answering jude. “if you let me use you as a scratching post, that may make me feel better,” he joked, shifting his weight onto one leg. he waved his once bitten apple around. “are you even dressed up??” he inquired, giving jude a critical look though he had a feeling the other wasn’t.

mace:
a wide grin momentarily stretches across his face to display a set of white teeth , head shaking slightly as he began mixing the red and white paint together to make the perfect shade of pink . ❛ i thought you came to me because i was the only option . ❜ mason snorts and the corner of his lip lifts in a small smirk , trying to come off more confident than he actually was at such a close distance . ❛ it suits you just fine , ave , if anyone were a cat in another life then i’m sure it would be you . ❜ he raises the brush , bristles now covered in pink , and begins his work while his other hand delicately takes avery’s chin between his thumb and index fingers . the silence that falls over them as he paints the tip of the other’s nose is comfortable — peaceful , even … that’s until he notices him staring in his peripheral vision . it takes all of his willpower to keep focus on the task at hand and not at the pair of brown hues that seemed to be memorizing his face .
mason , a young man who was naturally private , had just suggested introducing the other to a family member . what got into him and was it only about giving his sister a lesson in etiquette ? it wasn’t as if he were suggesting inviting him over to a family dinner or letting him meet his mom — right ? shit . the thought of his mother accompanying the child around the festival slipped his mind completely . all that he could do was simply pray to whatever deity was listening for something to prevent avery from having a moment to spare . not to mention , the man’s staring wasn’t helping the growing redness that began to spread across mason’s cheeks . ❛ oh , right — you’ll probably be busy … y’know , people have an almost insatiable appetite at these kinds of things . ❜ smooth , real smooth . he wishes someone would take the brush from his fingers and write the word ‘ loser ’ across his forehead . ❛ so , are you only here to work or do you genuinely enjoy stuff like this ? ❜ mason asks as if he’s completely unaffected by the gaze that the other has locked on him .
“is that so??” avery mused, not bothering to argue or agree. truth was, there were plenty of options he could have chosen from before his arrival. his co-workers would have also been more than happy to help add a bit of make-up to his look. he also could have come back later, should someone else come to help at the stall. regardless, the fact was he didn’t want anyone else to paint on his face. if mason hadn’t been the one running the stall, there was no way he would have chosen to stop by and add some more cat-esque features to his costume. not that mason needed to know that. as the younger confirmed that the cat choice was actually quite suiting, avery couldn’t keep his lips from curling into a smirk. the smirk didn’t last long, however, as his chin was taken between mason’s fingers. “folks at vita’s clinic suggested it to me,” he murmured, lashes fluttering slightly as the bristles of the paintbrush started to stroke his nose. a bit of silence settled over them for the moment, leaving avery to get lost in his gaze’s task of mapping out the other’s face.
it was most likley, his staring that is, the reason why he actually noticed the colouring begin to bloom on the other’s cheeks. it didn’t register, in the moment, that he could have been the one to cause the other to blush. “mm,” avery studied the other’s expression, wondering if he wanted to take back the invitation to introduce him to his younger sibling. “i’ll make time if i need to if you want to bring her by.” he told the other simply, because he would. as unexpected as meeting the other’s sister would be, he wouldn’t reject the option. blinking slowly, avery’s gaze finally flickered away. it shifted to look down at mason’s shoulder as he considered the other’s question. part of him felt inclined to answer truthfully in a more detailed and honest answer. another part figured a one word answer would suffice as well. avery chose to go somewhere in the middle. “only for work, really. they asked me to work the stall and i couldn’t come up with a good reason not to.” he paused, eyes shifting back to look at mason’s mouth. a habit from constantly lip reading in most scenarios although the other man is close enough he could focus on his words without needing to. “i’m not the biggest fan of crowds so i probably wouldn’t have come out otherwise.” he admitted this simply, not delving into details and instead keeping it short. it was more than he’d tell most, not that mason knew that.

SOPHIE:
Sophie rolled her eyes at him, but a smile pulled at her lips to show she wasn’t really annoyed, “I guess I brought that name on myself, huh?” Blowing out a breath, the brunette pursed her lips as her eyes roamed over the table of options in front of her. She hadn’t expected so many. “Wow. Went a little over board this year didn’t they,” her eyes darted up to his face and the apple he was holding, “What have you got? And do you recommend it? Or do I go with something with sprinkles.”
avery simply offered a lazy smirk in reply because she really did bring it on herself. it was cute though, so at least she had that going for her. at her surprise, a bit of a sheepish expression slipped onto his featrues. “uh, part of that is on me. i was pretty enthusiastic with all of the options we could have to really bring out the halloween spirit.” at her questions, the elder looked down at the options as well with a thoughtful frown. “ah, jeez. the shortbreads shaped like cauldrons are pretty good and i’m always a fan of coated apples, caramel or candied.” as if to prove his point, he waved the apple in hand around slightly in show. “what are you in the mood for, though?”

axel:
concern crosses his features but before he can say anything , the other his paying attention to the small child gripping his hand and , like he usually do , caved in — for now. his free hand travelled to his pocket , soft tone leading to the smaller girl “ how about we make avie happy by buying one of his sweets ? “ but that just sent the girl into a frenezie of buying two and not one because daddy also deserved one. nodding , he placed a ten dollar bill on the counter and took one of the caramelized apples , kneeling before the princess , muttering to her “ go play but make sure daddy can see you , yeah ? “ and there she goes , keeping a safe distance between them. axel leans against the counter , eyes focused on the pink dressed child as he mumbles “ if you don’t mind , i have to keep an eye out but now you can tell me what really is wrong. “ a quick stare towards the other before adding “ so spill. “
an ease appeared in the younger man’s expression as he watched the interaction between parent and child. it was endearing and he wished he could bestow a ton of smothering cheek kisses on the pair. ah, well. picking up the ten, avery charged the other for only one apple. it had been his initial want to simply give the little princess an apple anyways. “cheers,” he hummed, picking the best apples for the pair and placing it before them. he watched, a single brow curving, as axel proceeded to send her off. not really what he was expecting, but he couldn’t find it in him to be surprised. in fact, as the older told him to spill, a tired laugh escaped him. “what a dad,” he mumbled, leaning forward on his hands. he pressed his nose against the shorter male’s shoulder before hooking his chin to rest on top of it. “just a little overwhelmed. it’s been a while since i’ve been in such a crowded area.” in fact, this was the busiest crowd he’d worked in since his move and it was exhausting him much faster than he expected.

vita:
halloween was not vita’s thing at all. each year, she’d been called to the hospital to do training on one of the busiest nights of the year, and this was the first year she actually had the evening off. she was expected to dress up just like everyone else, and because she wasn’t the most creative, she’d settled for the obvious: sexy nurse. the costume was ridiculous, and she felt ridiculous, but it was only one night. and, unlike most of the crowd at the festival, she wouldn’t be in said costume the morning after, wasted on the floor of an unknown living room. when she spotted avery near the bakery’s food stand, she decided to join him - it wasn’t like she had any other plans. “you know,” she started, leaning against the wall the cart was positioned near, “i thought you were a vampire with those fangs, at first, but a cat does seem more fitting. can you even bite through that apple with them?”
he’d actually noticed her approach, believe it or not. which, it was a good thing he did or else her costume would have really startled him. “a nurse, really?” he questioned in return, tone flat, though a smile curved at the edges of his lips. “aren’t you already dressed up every day of the week?” he shifted, lazy gaze studying her for a moment before her question registered. “that’s the problem. i can’t bite into it. it’s really ruining my evening.” he sighed, jutting his lips out in a pout. “someone at the clinic actually suggested it to me,” he added, lifting his free hand to gesture to the cat ears. “i’m regretting it, though. should have gone with a costume that didn’t require headgear.” because it was annoying when he had to wear it with his hearing gear.

danny:
BRIGHT IDEAS WEREN’T EXACTLY SOMETHING DANNY HAD A COMMON OCCURRENCE & his most recent idea was absolutely no different, finding himself at the pumpkin carving table - it was a split second of thought before he was intentionally carving out the bottom of the pumpkin & punching out a classic jack-o-latern face . he thought maybe he could scare someone & before anyone running the table could stop him he had put his head into it and left . minutes into the stench was when he thought this wasn’t a great idea & trying to pull it off was when he knew it wasn’t . danny tried not to panic , finding a patch of grass to sit down on out of the way he was trying to decide if he should hurt his pride by asking for help . not able to see properly out of the eyeholes he’d cut , he fumbled a joint out of his pocket . “ man this shit fucking stinks . i cant even see or light this stupid ass thing “ voicing annoyance out loud , “ gonna end up lighting my self on fire like some dumb halloween reskin for ghost rider or whatever . “ a sigh of defeat , dropping onto his back his head only slightly cushioned by the pumpkin stuck on his head .
he stared. well, at least this time he wasn’t the only one staring. still, he was the only one the deemed it safe to approach the pumpkin headed individual. clearly, whoever was beneath the fruit ( were pumpkins fruit ) was not the brightest tool in the shed. then again, who was avery to judge him on such a thing? upon closer inspection, there were eyeholes cut in the pumpkin, however there were no visible eyes inside it. wrinkling his nose, avery moved to crouch near the individual’s head before reaching out a fist to hover near the forehead area of the pumpkin. he hesitated a moment before simply deeming it a why not situation and knocking heavily on the bright orange skin. “hello, anyone home?” he questioned, unable to keep the amusement out of his tone.
