It is wild to me that JK Rowling has experienced OCD and PTSD symptoms yet was unable to accurately portray the effects of severe trauma on a bunch of teenagers in her series.

It is wild to me that JK Rowling knows what incels are and stands completely against their toxic mentality but seems unaware that she wrote and defended a textbook ‘incel’ character in her series.

It is wild to me that JK Rowling is a self-proclaimed feminist so incredibly concerned with uplifting women, yet her series reeks of internalized misogyny and constantly puts down female characters for exhibiting traditionally feminine personality traits.

It is wild to me that JK Rowling defends her transphobia by claiming she’s trying to support the gay community, yet she has made not a single effort in her currently ten part franchise to actually, physically write in a canonically queer character— even when given the opportunity to further write about a character she had previously claimed was intended to be gay.

It is wild to me that JK Rowling wrote a series about very young teenagers who are strong, intelligent, capable, passionate, and understanding of the world, who know what is right and start revolutions and end wars and fight for justice, yet she apparently believes young people in real life are incapable of knowing their own identity.

Ten Fucked up realizations about Gone With the Wind

10. Fangirling this movie makes me complicit with it’s fucked up world view.

By rights this movie should have gone the way of Birth of A Nation and Triumph of the Will, artistically signficant films so reprehensible in their overall message that they are  never consumed outside of an academic environment.  Of course it didn’t go away, simply because it’s so incredibly entertaining.  It’s funny, romantic, exciting and such an effective melodrama that I cry through a whole box of kleenex every time I watch it. 

This film’s racial/gender politics make unalloyed fangirling impossible. Here is a short list of the film’s problematic assertions: war profiteering is excusable as long as the person who does it is eventually contrite about it (but not enough to give up his ill-gotten gains), Rape is no big deal as long as the rapist is Clark Gable, slave owners didn’t mistreat their slaves as badly as Scarlett treats the convicts at her mill, good black people are those who stay loyal to their masters and true to stereotypes, the KKK was founded by misguided but heroic people like Ashley Wilkes and Frank Kennedy who just wanted to protect their families from lawless transients, (this is hinted at in the film, but is spelled out clearly in the novel, which was one of the most popular books of its day) and perhaps the most damning given the context of the segregated south in the 1930s: reparations for slavery and voting rights for blacks were just the pipe dreams promised by carpetbagging Yankees trying to swindle Southern Whites out of their property. 

While the Academy Awards pat themselves on the back for giving Oscars to black people during a time of segregation, it’s worth pointing out the fact that the hotel in which the Awards took place was segregated and the black nominees were forced to sit in a separate section from whites.
