All You need to know about International Mathematics Olympiad + Tips and Tricks

International mathematics Olympiad (IMO) is a mathematics-based competition conducted by the Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF). It is conducted for students from class 1 to 12. Students compete with each other and test their mathematical knowledge and skills.

There are two levels, and everyone is eligible for Level 1 IMO exam; qualifying which they become eligible for Level 2 IMO exam. 

The Level 1 IMO exam is conducted in school hours and it’s an hour-long exam, with the paper being in English. Students from classes 1 to 4 have to answer 35 questions, while students from classes 5 to 12 answer 50 questions. 

The questions are objective type and have the paper divided into 4 sections- 

1) Logical reasoning, 2) Mathematical reasoning, 3) Everyday mathematics, 4) Achievers Section. Each section has different weightage. 

Class 1 and 2 students’ performance are evaluated on the basis of their Level 1 IMO results only, and for other classes, the following qualify for Level 2 exam: top 5% students from each class, top 25 zone wise and class wise rank holders, class toppers from each participating school who score 50% qualifying marks, and top rank holder in case of section-wise registration. 

Students can apply for IMO by approaching their schools, and the schools can contact SOF via phone (0124-4951200) or email (info@sofworld.org). The fee for the form for schools in India is INR 125 per student. Participating students receive awards based on their performances and the ranks they achieve. The awards include medals, cash prize, and certificates. The schools who perform well are also felicitated with awards.

IMO results are usually declared within 8 weeks of the IMO exam. Students can check their results in school or on the official website of SOF. The IMO results 2019 will be declared in January, 2020 and answer keys are already available.

TIPS AND TRICKS FOR INTERNATIONAL MATHEMATICS OLYMPIAD:

1.Be mentally prepared: The IMO exam has questions trickier than your regular school exams, so be prepared to think hard!

2.Be well versed with the syllabus: Go through your syllabus carefully and make sure you cover all the topics while preparing. There are also many IMO preparation books in the market with previous years papers, mock test series and workbooks; make sure to use them. 

3.Stick to your schedule: Make a schedule you are comfortable with and stick to it! Find a place where you can comfortably work on your math problems and don’t let your concentration be anything less than 100%.

4.Reinforce your basics: Having a good knowledge of your basics is very important, so keep revising it; it will make learning complex concepts easier.

5.Practice: There is no limit to practicing, so make sure that you practice as much as possible and as often as you can. Take self-assessment tests to keep a track on your progress.
