Character development versus pacing
iwritewewrite asked you:
I have just started my first larger writing project. The main character has a brother, who is rather important to the whole story, love developing those to characters. I am just scared that there relationship will take up to much space and screw the pacing/ action. Any tips?
I can totally relate to this, wow. Character development is so much fun that we pretty much let ourselves get carried away with it. But that’s cool, and let me tell you why. Write freely. If you seriously enjoy writing out these characters and their relationship, you should seriously write it. Seriously. You write because you want to write, first and foremost. Write the story you want to tell, and don’t worry about what it’s supposed to read or look like to everyone else. Write the story you enjoy telling, even if that story is full of “filler” scenes. Allowing yourself to write freely means you’re conquering those limitations that our inner critic likes to assert on us and our creative process. Listening to that inner critic all the time can be harmful, taxing, and make us fear putting even a single word down. This is when the volume of the inner critic has turned itself up to screaming – we can’t help but to listen until our ears bleed. But having the inner critic in your head isn’t a bad thing, as long as the volume’s turned down to something that allows us to create without fear. It’s good to look at our work critically as long as it doesn’t interfere with us achieving our goal. As soon as that angry little voice stops us, we need to turn the volume down. So, if you really enjoy writing character development, but you also really enjoy writing a fast-paced story, here are some things to keep in mind while you’re writing:
Exploring characters. Sometimes filling out endless character charts or face casting isn’t enough. Often what really gets us into the brains of our characters is actually writing them, and not just writing them outside the story, but within the context of the plot. Characters begin developing from the first page of the story, so those tidbits you might have written outside the story don’t show where your character is at the moment the story begins. Writing out the scenes that may be removed from the final product later is perfectly fine, as it only helped us explore that character further and portray them more accurately in the scenes that are kept.
Character arcs. In that same vein, remember that the character arc is just as important as the plot arc. The usual idea of “action”, such as fists flying or car chases, isn’t the only thing that drives pacing. Character arcs can also have rising action, inciting incidents, twists – all that same fun stuff. And also in that same vein –
Keep the plot in mind. When the plot develops, so do the characters. And when the characters develop, so does the plot. Think of how these development scenes bleed into each other, how you can tie what’s happening with the characters with what’s happening in the plot. Some of the best development happens when the plot happens to the characters, or the characters happen to the plot.
Thinking of pacing. How much of these development scenes are just idle chatter and playing around, and how much shows tension and active evolution? There’s a difference between characters sitting around discussing inconsequential life things, and characters sitting around discussing something that’s related to the plot, making those connections and unpacking details – even revealing how they feel about what’s going on, which is just as important as any action scene. Many things drive pacing aside from simply action, and oftentimes one of those many things can simply be a character with agency.
The first draft is the first draft for a reason. The first draft is throwing darts and hoping each one strikes the bull’s-eye. Well, that’s not how things work out. Some darts don’t even stick, especially if we’re working on our first novels and the process is still new. Some darts will bounce off. Some darts will strike measly points. Some darts’ll even strike the wall three feet away, or knock off other darts. It’s all a part of the process.
Perfection is the enemy. Writing is both trial and error. Don’t be afraid of the error.
Revise wisely. This means, of course, finding the best approaches to revising (as in, the approaches that work best for you). This also means it’s time to turn that critical voice up a notch, to focus those analytical eyes on what scenes are carrying their weight, versus what scenes arent. When paring down a narrative, you never want to strip it bare. The plot isn’t the only critical element of a story, after all, and if you carve out all of that necessary in-between, what you end up with is just a skeleton with no soul. A plot, not a story. But that doesn’t mean you should feel intimidated about doing any major renovations or overhauls. When considering how much of the character “filler” is too much, think about these things:
Eliminate scenes. Cut and paste them into a separate file so you don’t have to lose them entirely (“deleted scenes” are little fun things that you might use later). It might be that the events that took place in this scene still happened, even if the reader doesn’t get to see it. Sometimes a summary of what happened does the job in fewer words. Or, if there’s an event that takes place, or some sort of critical piece of information that’s revealed, but it still doesn’t need an entire scene, you might consider –
Combine scenes. It might be beneficial to have multiple important things happen in one scene, as opposed to multiple scenes where only one thing happens. Be careful about this, however, because you don’t want to strain “convenient coincidence”, as in the characters discover they need to find this elusive thing that no one has ever found before, and—oh, look at that, they find it on the first try in the same scene.
Cut passages. This post, under “Transition”, briefly discusses what I mean. If there’s padding between scenes that feels superfluous or extraneous, or delaying the continuation of the story without reasonable cause, such as when characters have inner reflection, cut it or summarize it.
Trim dialogue. Sometimes characters get away from us and segue into conversations that they weren’t supposed to get into. Mom talking about dishes? Dishes not critical to the plot arc or character development arc? Cut it or summarize it.
In the end, you’ll get a better idea of what your story looks like after you’ve written it. Then (after you’ve stuffed the story out of sight for a while) you’ll get a much more accurate idea of what the story reads like, or what the story even is, and you can also have your writerly friends read and give you their own opinions. So, in short, write all that stuff. During the writing process, it’s important. Once you hit the revising process, grab your axe. Good luck!

Bad pacing is the most common problem I see in stories, regardless of medium. I tried reading a new fantasy book today that had good prose, decent characters, and a world with a lot of potential. But the way it was paced killed all investment I had or could’ve had in it.
Also, the way people talk about pacing is very rudimentary and shallow. The criticism is either “pacing too slow” or “pacing too fast” and that’s it. No room for nuance and no explanation for what makes a certain pace too fast or slow.
Makes me want to write a short guide on how to pace stories properly, or at the very least a “what to avoid” guide.

Yeah, life got crazy for me too! Just saw this now.
Basically, but I also think there needs to be a sense of a romantic in people to appreciate the deeply flawed and unconventional character like Snape. The type that like Vampires and the big bad wolf from Little Red Riding Hood. Totally and utterly accepting of the flaws a good, well written character has.
Fandom policing is basically the norm now so I genuinely hope people get to experience a safe place without it, and get some reading comprehension along the way too.
I just realised Something about a portion of fandom I don't really engage with all that much. Because I don't want to, btw.
In all other shows, movies, books, etc, every single bad person is at least somewhat 'ugly' according to the narrative. The 'problematic' characters rarely get acknowledged because there are so many good looking characters who are good themselves (I remember Annabelle from the first book of Percy Jackson, I think, and there were more ofc).
However, Rowling's main idea about appearances was that it was an illusion. Every single good looking character is either reprehensible or ends up dying (Cedric) in the same book they were introduced*. The story wants to be relatable to how every teen feels, and no matter what, we all have insecurities.
However, they're just teens, and on top of that, at least one or more of our main teens have done something terrible or badwrong (Hermione with skeeter and Marietta). So, they aren't exceptionally beautiful and neither are they exceptionally good. Even the side characters who are popular come across as jerks to some of their family members, making their sibling cry.
This creates a problem for the people who don't have a sense of self yet, or are so scarred they can only look at life through black & white lenses.
The Halo effect playing greatly onto the above, we're presented with another set of teens, two of whom are described as extremely sought after by the opposite sex, one of whom is popular, and the final one who has endeared himself by showing ugly Snivellus his place (via map and the Verbal Sparring). They all, by the end of this introduction, understand that Snivellus is badwrong and doesn't deserve anything good.
'It's clear he's the villain, and has been since forever, see, these people agree with me and they're the Protagonist's parents.' Whether this is believed because of the Halo effect or taking Harry's perspective to mean a God pov, I can't tell. The point being, they are even more convinced.
They want an escape from how difficult it is to sort out their feeling about these people the author keeps throwing at their face so why not attach to the characters who are dead or strongly attached to the protagonist (so they can never be badwrong in later books). A safety blanket of sorts, if you will. And in doing so, they completely ignore the nuances of the scenes presented in the last book. Because they are attached, they'd rather call badwrong Snivellus' love impure than explore what the montage of all his memories implied. That beauty is skin deep.
The thing about people who like such black and white scenarios and people is: they will always fall prey to the Halo Effect. And it's extremely painful to be disillusioned about your favourites. So they may never get disillusioned.
All this to say, sometimes I wonder why that part of the fandom is like 'that'. And it's just that this is the safety net in this series, or this is just how vanilla people outside of fandom coming in can take.
And that's fine (coz I'm crazy for the marauders era as well, just with a slightly wider taste pallet).
TL Dr: The antis are attracted to wholesome ships and since Rowling made it so difficult to find such ships until much later where you are emotionally connected with each character, the antis attached to a bunch of (mostly) dead people who, by association to the Hero of the story, being pretty, popular, and clear on their behaviour with the badwrong confusing character, are all good. They were desperately looking for the safety net in the books and found some. Also, since antis are the way they are, maybe they believe the fictional character being dead means people would not criticise their wholesome ship? Idk.
A/N:
*The only properly handsome man - Bill - barely gets mentioned, marries a beautiful woman, and imo the only reason he doesn't die is because he didn't revel in his handsomeness or popularity (him liking Snape in school is so cute + that disqualifies him from being popular with the antis since he likes the badwrong character). Also, he was literally scarred on his once handsome face to show that his wife actually loved him and didn't just choose him to have beautiful babies. Her being a veela and owning her Frenchness were already flaws (in the narrative's opinion) so all she needed was a scarred husband. Now, they both don't have to die 🤣.

hey wait im also new to f1 but i saw the other ask and i was curious abt what you meant when you said no one will ever do it like nico rosberg?? also retiring after your first championship win is insane lmao what a power move
nico rosberg is just. he’s insane. he’s cunty. he’s wonderful. he possesses sass and audacity unlike any other. we unfortunately do not have time to get into his whole story (my lunch break is only so long) but here’s some highlights:
-technically he’s a nepo baby. his dad, keke rosberg, won the world championship in 1982 and they remain one of the Few father son duos to both win a world championship (don’t ask me who the others are idk but i know they exist)
-he and lewis hamilton met when they were kids in the late 90s sometime and were gokarting teammates at some point in i think the early 2000s? (not fact checking i don’t have the time rn) and they were Besties. they’ve talked about this before, mostly in older interviews, but the gist is that both of them were outcasts from the other karting kid in opposite ways (nico was the son of a champion and rich and lewis was from nothing and pretty much the only poc most of the time) and that drew them together and they were Menaces according to legend. everything was a competition and they trashed hotel rooms and ate pizza and ice cream and kellogg frosties and went to greece and dreamed of being in f1 together
-nico signed with williams in 2006. his teammate was mark webber. and nico had long flowing blonde hair (this is important). he crashed at one race and mark webber said “britney’s in the wall” cementing the nickname britney, like britney spears. jenson button (another driver) said later on that they called nico britney because he was “very pretty” (do with that what you will)
-he was just. insane. cunty. constantly looked like a european bond villain. wore god awful shoes. whole bit. once he stayed in his car when it got craned off the track cause he didn’t want his hair to get wet. which is insane cause he’s wearing a helmet it would have gotten equally as not wet had he gotten out.
-anyway, lewis made it to f1 in 2007 and they had their first podium together i think that year (?) and it’s cute and fun and oh boy you’re not ready for what these two have coming
-lewis won the championship in 2008 (but he almost won in 2007, his rookie year) at mclaren.
-nico went to mercedes when they recentered the grid in 2010. his teammate was michael schumacher, who was fresh out of retirement. (yes the michael schumacher, 7x world champion). michael fucked with nico endlessly according to legend, including making him piss in a bucket pre race because he would hog the bathroom until the last possible second. nico still out preformed him most of the time, and the car was mid as hell.
-michael retired part 2 at the end of 2012. and who replaced him but lewis hamilton
-so the two of them were teammates again. the cards were absolute Stacked against them. because yes they were besties yes they’d known eachother forever but the first person you’re judged against is your teammate. and you’re trying to beat your teammate. and lewis already had a championship. nico wanted a championship.
-2013 was relatively chill. the car was kinda mid. they did well but not fantastic and did some fuck ass pr (highly reccomend looking those videos up)
-2014 they had a car that could win. and they started fighting eachother for wins. they played all kinds of mind games against eachother and withheld stats and nico ran illegal engine modes (supposedly) and lewis said they were no longer friends after nico supposedly wrecked his monaco qualifying one year but they claimed they still supported eachother and were friends off track. lewis won in 2014 and in 2015. but nico was right behind him and he wanted to win a championship, he didn’t want to be a number 2 driver
-so in 2016 nico did some insane shit. he stopped sleeping with his wife so that he could get better sleep or something, he did weird things to cut weight, he basically did everything and then some to win. and then he did. he won the championship and then at the prize giving ceremony announced he was retiring. he didn’t tell lewis this.
more after i get off work :)

An unexpected urge to defend your honor
Evan gets into a duel against Klaus Sterling, a boy in Ravenclaw who for some reason enjoys pissing him off, all because of some comment he made about Severus.
For some reason this simple idiotic comment has him seething in anger and for some reason he wants nothing more than to defend Severus's honor.
🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹
"NO!"
The crowd of students standing in the courtyard let out loud gasps.
Why?
Well, the day had started of peaceful. Evan went about his day without a care in the world. He'd talk to his friends while walking to his other classes. Tho sadly the peacefulness had to end.
Evan made his way towards the courtyard in order to meet up with his friends- Avery & Mulciber. He had been with Severus at the library but he had gotten bored and suggested that they leave. Severus, who had been re writing some notes, told Evan that he'd meet up with them in a bit and for him to go on ahead.
After a small debate Evan complied with Severus's wishes and went on ahead. Once he arrived at the courtyard he found his friends near one of the farther corners. As he walked towards them, he passed by a group of Ravenclaws.
Now he didn't know any of them, except for one. And it was because of this one that he stopped in his tracks and his blood began to boil.
"Shut your mouth, Sterling"
The group of Ravenclaws grew quiet upon hearing Evan's voice.
Well all except one.
Klaus chuckled and a smirk appeared on his face "Now, now Rosier that's rather rude. I never said a word to you" He spoke mockingly. Evan glared at him and before he could say anything else Klaus beat him to it.
"Or were you eavesdropping on us? Now that's just not right. Didn't your mother teach you any manners?" He taunted, his friends began to snicker and Evan felt his temper reaching close to the edge.
"Tho I'm curious..." Klaus continued "What on earth did I say that got you so angry? Me and my friends weren't speaking about you, not like we even wanted too" He said which caused his friends to laugh.
Evan clenched his fists and let out a soft growl in anger. Once again before he could utter a word Klaus spoke again "In fact we were only talking about little 'ol Snape and-" He went silent for a second and a huge grin appeared on his face.
"My! My! My! Well it seems Rosie here has a soft spot!!" He laughed along with his friends "And for that disgusting greasy bat freak!!" He shouted out and this caused the other students around them to laugh.
Evan growled "Do not call me bloody Rosie, Sterling!!" He shouted out "And don't you dare call Severus that again or I'll put you in the bloody hospital!!" He threatened.
Klaus smiled "Aww, look at that Rosie is defending his wittle boyfriend~" He said and chuckled. His smile then turned into a smirk "Now what makes you think you could put me in the hospital" He added and pulled out his wand "If you think you're so capable then go ahead and try"
Evan pulled out his wand and pointed it at Klaus as he said the knockback jinx. Klaus was quick to deflect it and upon doing so Evan grew even angrier. The students quickly gathered around them both as spells went flying through the air.
Both boys were hit with a few spells but were quick to recover. Evan was soon hit with the periculum spell, this caused the students surrounding them to gasp. Given that that particular spell was used to signal for help.
Klaus smirked as Evan layed on the ground, thinking he had won he moved to place his wand back in his robes. Tho his smirk fell as he saw Evan struggling to get up. Klaus growled and turned to one of his friends.
"Hit him from behind" He whispered. His friend nodded and went to do as told. Evan got to his feet and sent a glare towards Klaus.
"My Rosie you don't look so good, maybe you should give up" Klaus said in annoyance.
"Like hell I will!" Evan shouted out and quickly casted a stunning hex at him. Klaus barely deflected it and growled, he was getting tired of this but it'll be over soon enough.
So he thought.
As his companion took position just a few feet behind Evan, Klaus nodded his head and the knockback jinx was soon casted.
"NO!"
But it never met it's target.
The crowd of students gasped loudly as Severus Snape appeared out of nowhere and quickly deflected the spell.
Before Klaus's companion could overcome his shock Severus casted two spells. The first being expelliarmus and then he quickly casted a stunning hex.
Evan watched Severus disarm the unknown boy with a shocked and joyist expression.
Klaus on the other hand watched Severus in pure anger.
"YOU BLOODY LITTLE FREAK!!!" He shouted out "CRUCIO!!!" He cried out.
Evan didn't have time to react but luckily for him he didn't have too. Severus stepped in front of Evan and quickly casted Protego. The crucio curse bounced off the shield that surrounded them and right into the crowd.
Everyone was quick to duck and avoid getting hit by the curse. Before Klaus could regain his composure his wand quickly flew out of his hand and he was hit with the knockback jinx.
Severus put his wand back into his robe and turned around to face Evan "C'mon we should go" Evan simply nodded and the pair ran off somewhere to hide.
They quickly entered an abandoned classroom and locked the door. They both fell to the floor trying to catch their breaths. It was silent except for their heavy breathing up until Evan decided to speak.
"Thank you"
"Yeah, no problem Rosie"
Evan's eyes widen as he heard that blasted nickname leave Severus's lips. Tho for some reason he didn't feel angry, no he felt happy and he felt his cheeks heat up. He closed his eyes as he chuckled.
"Piss off you arse" He said jokingly which caused Severus to laugh which in turn caused Evan's heart to flutter.
'I'm fucked' Evan thought as he lovingly stared at Severus who was still laughing.
'So, so, so very fucked'

Homework Buddies
Evan and Severus only ever talk to eachother when it comes to doing homework. Tho their conversations only involve asking questions. Other times they don't talk at all.
🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹
"Ugh, I really hate herbology..."
"You only hate it because you don't get it, which is weird given that you come from a family who adores books and knowledge"
Evan sighed and dropped his quill. Merlin if his mother saw him now she'd end him but not before she scolded him.
"I'm not a big fan of plants-"
"Or potions" Severus interrupted while smiling. Evan simply glared at him and crossed his arm. He didn't appreciate being called out like this.
"Whatever, can you help me? If my mother finds out I'm failing herbology she'll kill me, that and potions" He stated "Honestly why do I have to suck at the two very subjects my mother adores" He added with clear annoyance.
Severus simply chuckled softly "Guess the world is not in your favor" He said before standing up and walking over to Evan's bed and sitting down besides him.
Evan scoffed at the remark but then smiled when Severus sat besides him.
The rest of their day was spent with Severus helping Evan with his herbology homework, luckily they didn't have potions homework- much to Severus's dismay and to Evan's happiness.
About two days later the pair were found in the library. Everything seemed fine, they were both doing homework and every once in a while Evan would ask Severus a question and Severus would happily answer.
So what on earth made Severus slam down his quill and crumble up his paper in distress? Evan tilted his head in confusion as Severus stood up abruptly, which caused his chair to fall over, and stomp away.
He picked up the crumbled up paper and unraveled it. 'Oh...' he thought
"So there is a subject that Severus struggles in" He said to himself.
Evan stood and headed in the direction that Severus went. He quickly found him sitting on the floor hugging his legs. It pained Evan a bit to see Severus like this but atleast this time it had something to do with homework and not a certain group of boys.
He walked over to Severus and kneeled down in front of him.
"Hey Sev, it's alright"
Severus lifted up his head to look at Evan and glared at him. He wanted to say something but instead he bit his tongue to keep quiet.
"Divination isn't for everyone....it seems pointless to be honest but whatever" Evan stated and this caused Severus to snicker. "Tho as pointless as it seems, I'm pretty good at it so I can help you with the essay" He added.
Severus smiled and nodded "Thanks..." He muttered. They both stood up and walked back to their table. "Alright let's get started" Evan said, Severus picked up his discarded quill and they began working on the divination essay together.
Since that day Evan would help Severus with his divination homework just like Severus would help him with his own homework. He also kept quiet about the fact that Severus had trouble with that subject.
One day the pair were sitting in the middle of the common room in front of the fire place. They sat next to eachother working on a few essays for some classes, well Evan was working on some essays. Severus had finished his and was currently reading a book about divination, he clearly wanted to get good at the subject.
Every once in a while their classmates can hear soft mummers coming from the two but nothing else. They thought it was odd to see those two sit so close to eachother but no one bothered to say anything.
Mostly cause they knew what would happen should they do or say something, especially if it's to someone of the Rosier family.

Silent Friendship
Evan and Severus form a silent friendship when they begin to heal eachother in their 3rd year of Hogwarts.
🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹
It was odd.
Evan always thought it was odd for Severus to come to the train station alone. Even more so to see him flinch whenever that redheaded friend of his called out his name. Yes it was odd but hey it didn't concern him atleast not during his 1st & 2nd year.
Tho during his 3rd year back he had noticed something that he never saw on Severus before. He had noticed it when he saw him hug his redheaded friend. It was bit difficult to make out but when they arrived to Hogwarts and made their way to the great hall. He was able to see that strange thing that had caught his eye more clearly.
It was a bruise, a bruise that resembled a hand. Not only that he also caught notice that Severus cheek, which was usually a snowy white in his eyes, was now a bit red...was that purple? Evan narrowed his eyes and once the welcoming feast had ended he grabbed hold of Severus's hand and dragged him to an empty classroom.
"What happened?"
Silence.
Severus had looked down at the ground and refused to speak. Evan stared at him for awhile before letting out a soft sigh.
"Can I heal you?"
Evan was met with a shocked and confused expression from Severus. It took several minutes before Severus nodded. Evan let out a sigh of relief and gestured for Severus to sit down on one of the chairs in the room. Once he was seated, Evan rummaged through his bag and pulled out a small container of healing salve.
He carried it around with him because his brother gets into trouble and usually gets hurt from time to time. Evan uncapped the container and gather some salve on his fingers. He gently applied it onto Severus's cheek, he didn't fail to notice him slightly jump at the contact or the quiet whimper he let out due to the slight pain.
Evan let out a soft sorry and continued to apply the salve on his cheek. Once he had finished, he took hold of Severus's hand and began to apply some of the salve on his wrist. He held onto his hand a little longer once done, simply watching the bruise slowly fade away.
He was curious to know how Severus managed to get them but he knew that he wasn't comfortable talking about it, especially to someone who he wasn't friends with.
Once he saw that the bruises have gone away, he and Severus walked to the Slytherin common room in silence. Evan never brought up the issue and Severus was grateful for it.
After that day Evan found himself healing Severus at the end of most days. Severus didn't feel comfortable going to the hospital wing, obviously he wanted to avoid answering questions, and would simply go back to his room or hide in an empty classroom and attempt to heal himself.
One day, after he first healed him, Evan had saw him holding his wrist and it seemed that Severus was very cautious about it. Just like the beginning of the school year he dragged Severus into an empty classroom inorder to see what was wrong.
After examination he noticed that Severus's wrist was sprained. He pulled out his wand and casted a few spells and his wrist began to heal.
"Better?"
Severus nodded. He gave Evan a shy smile before making his way towards the classroom door to leave.
"If you get hurt you can come to me if you don't feel like going to the hospital wing"
Severus looked back at Evan with a surprised expression. After a minute he simply smiled, "Thank you" and with that Severus was gone.
So from then forth Severus would sometimes go to Evan to get patched up. Tho one day it seemed that the tables have turned.
Evan staggered into his room that he shared with Avery, Mulciber, & Severus. He sighed in relief when noticed that they were asleep, well atleast he thought. He walked towards his bed and before he could simply fall onto it, he noticed that Severus's bed was empty.
"You're hurt"
He jumped at the voice and quickly spun around. A sigh of relief left his lips when he saw that it was Severus who spoke.
"Yeah, I am"
"Do you wanna talk about it?"
Evan shock his head and Severus simply nodded in response.
"Sit, I'll heal you" Severus said as he placed his books on his bed. Evan followed orders and sat down on his bed and then watched Severus rummage through his school trunk.
After a few minutes Severus walked towards Evan with a few vials of healing potions. He took each vial that Severus handed him and drank it without question. As he drank the potions he could hear Severus softly mutter some healing spells.
"Better?"
Evan simply nodded. Severus hummed in satisfaction and gathered up the empty vials and placed them back in his trunk. Before Severus climbed into bed he turned his head to face Evan one last time.
"If you get hurt you can come to me if you don't feel like going to the hospital wing"
Evan couldn't stop the smile forming on his face upon hearing Severus's words. They were the same ones he had told him when he had healed his wrist. He watched as Severus got into bed before getting into his own.
After that day Evan would go to Severus whenever he needed to be healed inorder to avoid questions. Severus would also go to Evan in order to be healed as well. Even tho they were both capable of healing themselves there was something more satisfying about going to one another to be healed. It simply felt nicer, it was more comforting to them both.

It doesn’t matter if the Marauders Matured.
It doesn’t matter. Sure, they could’ve matured and grown up- which they didn’t and go about their lives as if everything was fine. Because they’re the perpetrators; they’re the bullies/abusers. They weren’t affected by the trauma they inflicted on Snape.
Snape can’t just “get over it”. It’s TRAUMATIC. TRAUMA. You don’t just get over trauma. You can’t. There isn’t “getting over it” there’s “getting help to manage the symptoms of what the trauma inflicted upon you and making it a bit easier to live your life like normal” trauma has a lasting effect on people. It takes years to recover and heal. To come to terms with what happened. This is also not done on one’s own. It’s done with support from loved ones, trusted friends and medical/mental professionals like therapists, etc. Which Snape was never able to get because he didn’t have that kind of support system.
So no. It doesn’t matter if the Marauders matured (even though they never did) their actions still had a deep impact on Snape’s life that effect it even years after it happened. It is ingrained in his mind and no matter how hard he tries to hide his emotions and pain it’s still there and it will always still be there. With help it can be easier to manage- but he never is able to get that.

Snape is definitely that one person who just drops the most unhinged traumatic lore randomly in conversations as if they were normal things
Like one time he and Rolanda Hooch ended up making face ice baths to see who'd last longer and he won (no small feat because a picture Rolanda Hooch is under the dictionary definitions of competitive and stubborn) and he casually went "yeah, it was easy, my old man sometimes held me under water if there was enough rain in the buckets under the holes in the ceiling when he was mad at me" and everyone else was like "wait what the fuck did you just say??!" and he just. continued to ask what was for lunch
Or the time poppy Pomfrey got mad because he had burns on his hand and didn't bother telling her and he was like "it's nothing, my old man would sometimes stub his cigarettes out on me" and she just stared at him because what do you even say to that?!
Or when he refuses to go out if the others are planning to drink because "I've had my fill of dealing with pissed adults, I'm not risking a broken rib because one of you decided to throw a bottle at me" and they're like "h-how do you even think that, what the fuck happened to you?"
#''What?? I tried telling you about it when I was a student. but no one said anything. I thought it was normal?''#this is just sad
