The Selkie Wife by Brian Froud
We are of the sea. We spend our days and nights diving deep below the swells and waves or playing in the shallows with the sun warming our bodies or the moon painting our flesh silver. We are of the sea but the land calls to us, and sometimes we come. Our kind can be foolish, and at times we are caught by mortals. When we walk upon the land, we shed our sea-skins-our sealskins-and when we would do this, we can be caught, for we are Selkies, and you have many tales of us.
I was caught by a mortal man. I came ashore and danced on the sand for the joy of having feet, and he found my cast-off skin and hid it. He took me to his house on the shore and kept me for a time. He was a kind man and a good man and a loving man. I gave him sons and he gave me, well, something. I cannot explain what he gave me, and I do not expect you to understand, I do not understand.
In the tales you tell of me, I was lonely and I longed to leave the land and return to the sea. You say I did not love the man who loved me. But I did love him. We loved as two from different realms can love; and then we parted. He was an honest man and a generous one.
Our sons stayed on land. They had no wish for a life beneath the waves. From the shallows I watched them grow and age, and I watched my man age and finally die. He is buried on the shore, but his spirit is with me now, a glimmering shadow that races by my side tumbling and spiraling in the depths of the ocean. And so we love again.

Brambles' Embrace ~The thorns that wound also protect. In moments of heartache I will hold you. In times of fear I am near. To guard and to guide, protect, and sometimes hide. I've grown these thorns, so you do not have to. Sleep, little love, in my brambles embrace.

Have you ever been faced with two choices, neither of them what you truly want? This is the story of a girl, who finds herself in an unknown wood. A girl who dares to look for the choice not offered.
Wings, Thimble, Thorn is a short story, evocative of Hans Christen Andersen, with a touch of Grimm. The darkly whimsical illustrations complete the story and reveal truths of their own, instead of merely mirroring the text.
The story follows Oona, as she journeys through the Scraggle Wood, looking for a way to fulfill her heart’s desire.
I can’t say much more, you’ll have to discover the story for yourself. Dare you enter the Scraggle Wood?
pre-order the book.

I’ve always been reading fairy tales and stories, looking for the ones that really speak to me. The ones with heart. Now, I’ve finally finished writing and illustrating one of my own. I hope it speaks to you.
“…A cackleberry is a wondrous thing. Strange, to be sure, but wondrous just the same. They are friends of rot, re-claimers of damp wood and molding stone. Thin tendrils pale as waterlogged fingers push up from carpets of matted leaves and rise from the forest floor. A swelling, a blooming, a beginning. A cackleberry is a rare occurrence. Some liken them to mushrooms, or puffballs, while others think them more similar to flower buds. Either way, they are said to hold the dreams of the forest. This particular cackleberry grew in the shadow of an oak snag. It glowed softly, pulsing to the rhythm of decaying oak roots. Held tight within its shell was a small girl. She had spent a thousand days cloaked in black dirt and cradled by oak roots. She had swum through places beneath the forest floor, friend to the mycelium that threaded the dirt like stars. Then she had been drawn above. Now her world split open. Something wondrous was about to happen.”
This is the story of a girl, who finds herself in an unknown wood. A girl who dares to look for the choice not offered. The story follows Oona as she journeys through the Scraggle Wood looking for a way to fulfill her heart’s desire. It is, of course, a fairy tale, though a bit of an odd one.
It’s on kickstarter now.
