Car Hacks: Part 2
Here are some quick tips and tricks for your vehicle:
Look at the gas gauge.
Who has driven someone else’s car and needed to get gas? Who has done it…. You pull up to the tank on the wrong side…. I’m guessing most of us!  Did you know that most gas gauges have a small arrow to the left or right indicating which side the gas tank is on?  This saves on the embarrassment of pulling up to the wrong side at the gas station!
Use a tennis ball to help park in the garage
Sometimes the parking space in your garage can be very small.  You can suspend a tennis ball that is attached to a string to the ceiling, it will hit your windshield when you have pulled in far enough, is a great way to make parking in the garage easy every time.
Keep Food warm with your seat warmer
Although it might not be the best car hack…it is a great hack to keep your food warm!  Have a little drive home from picking up the pizza? Turn on the seat warmer and serve your family warm pizza!
Pool Noodles!
Cut a pool noodle in half and attach to the garage wall so that you can protect the door edge of your vehicle from hitting the wall.   The door will hit the soft pool noodle instead of the garage wall.
Broken Windshield Wiper?
In a pinch you can tightly wrap panty hose around the broken metal blade to have functional windshield wipers.  It will get you through until you can purchase new wipers.

Part 1: Car Hacks
Here are some quick tips and tricks for your vehicle:
Find your car anywhere- take a picture of it!
We’ve all been there, a long day of shopping, or a day at the ball park, or even just grocery shopping, and you can’t remember where you parked!  Most of us have cameras on our cell phones now…snap a picture of nearby landmarks, so that you don’t have to remember after your long day!
Put your car key fob on your chin to increase range.
Strange, but true!  Yes, you might look funny doing this, but the fluids in your head increase the range of the car retrieval signal, acting as a conductor!
De-ice a lock with hand sanitizer
Have you ever been locked out of your car, by a pesky frozen lock?  Water-less hand sanitizer does more than keep germs away, it has a heavy alcohol content that can also break down the ice, cutting down time and frostbite!
Fix cracks and scratches with nail polish
Nail polish can be the fix-all for your paint and glass needs for your vehicle.  Will it look perfect, no…but it can save the paint and glass.  Put clear polish on a crack in your windshield to slow the crack!  You can even put clear polish on a small dent to prevent it from rusting.  Use a colored polish as a paint retouch! Vehicle paint and Nail polish are very similar in nature!
Use toothpaste to shine your headlights.
Toothpaste smeared on a soft cloth, applied to your headlights, will have them looking like new in minutes!  Such a cheap and easy fix!
Stay tuned next month for part 2 of tips and tricks!!!!

Why can’t I find a vehicle for $1000 anymore????
  Why can’t I find a vehicle for $1000 anymore????
We have had quite a few people calling and coming by lately for $1000 vehicles.  Unfortunately, we just can’t find these vehicles anymore…. but why?
During the recession in 2008-2009, new car sales dramatically decreased.  Although this is 9 years ago, it has affected the number of used vehicles today. Late Model vehicles are harder to find and especially at a decent price.  Meanwhile, people are also holding onto their vehicles longer. When people purchase a vehicle, they take care of it, and are on average, keeping their vehicle for about 8 years.
Prices at the auctions have increased as well.  We ran an article last year about the hurricanes in the South causing prices of Used vehicles to increase.  Most viable used vehicles are being shipped to the Southern US to replace many of the flood damaged vehicles.  This demonstrates the law of Supply and Demand.  We have low supply of vehicles in Illinois, which leads to higher demand, which can command higher prices.  Unfortunately, for the car dealer to make money, they must price the vehicle at a price higher than what they paid at the auction.  They must recondition the vehicle, and this takes money from their profit.  Hopefully not losing money in the end.  It’s a gamble.
Programs that are paid for by the state are also causing a shortage of inexpensive vehicles.  Programs such as cash for clunkers, donating vehicles to charities, or people in California being paid to retire older vehicles. Cars we might have sold for $3,000 to $3,500 a couple years are now $5,000 to $5,500.
Now is it possible to find the $1000 vehicle on Craigslist?  The answer is yes!   But you must be an informed buyer.  You most likely will be getting a clunker!  There will most likely be body damage, no AC, interior stains, etc.  If you just need a vehicle to get you from point A to point B, and absolutely do not care what it looks like, it is possible.  Do your due diligence though, make sure that it runs!  Some vehicles to stay away from…No license plates-this means that it is not being driven, vehicles with no pictures…it is actually that bad, it broke the camera!  Vehicles with major issues. You will most likely have some repairs, but make sure that it is nothing major!  And make sure that they have a clean title!  I looked up $1000 cars on craigslist right now, and found many cars that looked ok, but after reading the descriptions-most were not running.  There were some vehicles that maybe didn’t look the greatest but were running.  Just always remember, when buying from a private party, there is no guarantee for your purchase.

Wrapping up the Chicago Auto Show
Did you know that the Chicago Auto show is the biggest auto show in the US!  It is also the longest running; this year marked the 110th Auto show.  More than 1000 Vehicles take up 1 million square feet in this huge show.  The Chicago Auto Show is also a great fundraiser for various charities.  They have raised over $48 Million in the last 30 years.
One of the best aspects of the Auto Show is the concept cars. The Manufacturers take consumers wants and needs into account when creating the concept vehicles.  Many of these vehicles are environmentally friendly and featuring ways to conserve energy.  They are designing the vehicles with sleek designs and are using a great deal of white in the interior.  This often is a huge contrast with the darker color that is used in the interior.  Here are the new concept vehicles that were featured at the Chicago Auto Show:
CADILLAC ESCALA INFINITI Q INSPIRATION LEXUS LF -1 MITSUBISHI RE-MODEL A TOYOTA FT-4X
Now, if you aren’t into concept vehicles, here are some of my favorite vehicles presented at the Auto Show:
50th Anniversary Subaru vehicles.  A whole line of Subaru’s in heritage blue.  They will release a new model for each Subaru on the market in the Spring of 2018
The 2019 Ford Ranger- Ford is bringing it back!  It is a great midsize truck! https://www.chicagoautoshow.com/vehicles-on-display/2019/ford/ranger/
2019 Infiniti QX50- What a sharp SUV crossover: https://www.chicagoautoshow.com/vehicles-on-display/2019/infiniti/qx50/

Keeping Your New Year’s Resolution… For Your Vehicle!!
By this time of year, we have probably all started (and stopped) our New Year’s resolutions already. Whether it be weight loss, or saving money we can lose track so easily. Something we can always strive for is to take better care of our vehicles. Here is an important and EASY list to take better care of your vehicle this year:
1. Routine Car washes- This is very important especially with all the winter salt in the Midwest. We always recommend using a touch-less car wash, if possible. And make sure to get a car wash that cleans the undercarriage.
2. Wipe down the inside every time you get in the vehicle. This might take you 20 seconds, but will make a world of difference. Keep a small trash can in your vehicle, to clean up the excess trash. Also keep an organizer for sunglasses, rags, loose change, perfume, hand sanitizer, tire pressure gauge, etc. This will keep your cleaning products out of the way, but easily accessible.
3. Make sure to routinely check your tire pressure. With the tire pressure gauge in your organizer, it should be handy anytime you need to check the tire pressure.
4. Listen to your car-Be proactive, when you hear noises, don’t let it go! This could cause you to end up spending more money in the long run. Find a mechanic that you trust and take in your vehicle any time you hear a strange noise.
5. Routine oil changes & service- Make sure that you get routine oil changes. Every 3 months, or 3,000 miles. Also make sure to take your car in for a bi-annual tune-up. Make sure that everything is running smoothly, to keep your vehicle lasting a long time.
6. Keep your fluids topped off- In Illinois, we can face the most extreme weather in one day. Make sure that those fluids are topped off to prevent salt buildup and protect against empty fluids.
Let’s all make this resolution stick!

How the Hurricane season will impact used-car value in Illinois
The Hurricane season is upon us.  Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma have devastated the South with floods, winds and destruction.  People are homeless, have to relocate and are struggling to make ends meet.  Their houses are gone, but so are their cars.       History has shown us that when there are devastating events like floods; vehicles are diverted to the area to help the communities.  This makes the Supply (Inventory) very low, but the demand great in our area for used cars.  It has been reported that 1 million-1.5 million vehicles maybe be totaled due to the floods.  We have been told by our industry connections that inventory from the Midwest is already being diverted to the South.  The used car market will have lower than normal inventory levels, which will increase the cost of used cars throughout the Midwest.      With this being said, we also want you to be hyper aware when buying a car in the next 6-12 months.  If buying a vehicle, find out where the car originated from.  Also make sure that you obtain a vehicle history report, especially looking for Flood/Salvage/Branded titles.  This is especially important when buying from a private party, because there is no protection for you the buyer.        Since the used car prices will be increasing this potentially makes buying a new vehicle a better value.  Although we do not have new vehicles on our lot, our concierge service allows us to get the perfect new vehicle for you.  You tell us what you want, and we will find the perfect car at a great price.  Being a dealer, we work with other dealers to find you a fair and reasonable price.   It is a good time to consign a vehicle with us.  Our top priority is to get your vehicle sold for the highest price, in the quickest amount of time.      Please consider donating your time, or money to a charity to help with the hurricane relief.  They need our help more than ever.  AutoSmart values involvement in our community.  With our commitment to community, we have partnered with the Rotary Club of Oswego to aide in disaster relief.

Are you ready for some Football?
As summer reaches to an end, and the heat turns into a cool fall breeze, we all know that means it is…Football Season!  And the art of tailgating begins.  If you are like me, the best part of football is getting to the game and tailgating.  Have you ever considered though, that some vehicles are just better than others for this?  Have you ever tried to cram all of your friends into a 4 door sedan, with the grill, and cooler?  It’s not so fun!  So today, we’re going to take a look at some of our vehicles that are great for the football and tailgating season:
2006 Ford Expedition- This is a great vehicle for those college students that would like an expensive vehicle that is roomy, and in good shape.  Did I mention that there is a great trunk area perfect for the grill and cooler?  Throw those books in the back seat, pick up your buddies, and go to your favorite game, but stop off at the parking lot first!
http://autosmartnetwork.com/used-cars-oswego-il/2006-ford-expedition-c2016-36/
2012 Ford Escape- Not only is this a perfect family vehicle, but this also is a caravan for the kiddos, or sports equipment, or a perfect tailgating vehicle. The back door opens upward which allows for perfect comfort when watching the kid’s soccer game.

But please don’t forget about the 1963 Ford Galaxie. This is the perfect vehicle to attract attention all day!  It is a beautiful red, and very spacious.  You would be the envy of any neighborhood, driving this around.

Buying a car for college/ high school student
It feels like yesterday that your son or daughter was taking their first steps, and last month they walked across the graduation stage! Although college feels like the most likely next step, making sure that they get there safely is often not a priority. Making sure that our new college students have a safe vehicle to travel in puts our minds at ease. Here are some things to think about when purchasing that vehicle for them: 1. Be sure to be informed about the vehicle that you are purchasing. Go in with some research for the vehicle. You can research the competitive prices and information on Autotrader, Kelley blue book, and nada.com. The more knowledgeable you are about your purchase, the less likely you will be to pay more than you need to for it! 2. What will the vehicle primarily be used for? A brand new vehicle for a new college student may not be the best purchase. Remember a vehicle starts depreciating in value the moment you drive it off the lot. So practical vehicles for young drivers would be low maintenance, and dependable vehicles. Trucks don’t make the most ideal purchases since they are bigger and often have terrible gas mileage. 3. If buying used, remember to research the history of the vehicle. Go to the website: VehicleHistory.gov (the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System). Also make sure to read about “lemon laws” in your state. It never hurts to be informed! 4. Make sure not to commit yourself or your student to more than 15-20% of your monthly budget on the vehicle. This includes the car payment, insurance, gas, repairs, registration fees and maintenance. You never want to get yourself into a situation that you cannot afford. So 15-20% of your income is a good standard. 5. Don’t forget that a lot of students may be eligible for good student discounts on insurance plans, and also safe driver discounts. Anyway to save some money, is great! So enjoy those steps around your now empty home, knowing that you have made smart choices on your new college student’s vehicle. Nothing is better than having peace of mind!

How to prepare your vehicle for the perfect summer road trip
Detail- We will forever be cleaning up the snack crumbs after a road trip, and the vehicle will definitely need to be vacuumed after the trip. But we always underestimate how important it is to wash and wax the outside of the vehicle before the trip.  Just by doing this simple step, you can prevent all the road grime from getting on your vehicle:  Sand in the desert, or salt and snow in the mountains.  You can also ensure great visibility through your windows; not to mention saving a lot of time at the gas station, trying to get streak-free windows!
Window tint-This is a must, especially if you are traveling in the hot South. Tinting will keep your vehicle cool on the inside, because it prevents some of the sunlight and heat from entering through the windows. It will also prevent fading on the inside of the vehicle.  Tinting is great for naps for the kiddos, because the sun won’t be in their face on the long drive! This hopefully means a more peaceful drive!
Gas saving- Gas is expensive! But, there are some great and simple ways to make sure that you are optimizing your mileage on your vehicle:
Check your tire pressure- Make sure that it is the recommended PSI for your vehicle per your manual. This can help save on money.
Get rid of excess weight- I know what you are thinking, but no, not any of your riders. But if you have an extra row of seats not in use, take them out.  It will save you some green!
Don’t Speed and Use Cruise control- I know it is hard to do the speed limit, trust me! But going the speed limit at a consistent speed will save you a great deal of fuel, which in turn provides more money for the fun stuff on your road trip, like seeing the biggest rubber band ball!  Because who doesn’t want to do that!
What to pack- Make sure that there is a spare tire in your vehicle, just in case there is a flat. Also make sure to pack some essential items in case of that breakdown (snacks, water, flashlight, etc…) Better to be safe than sorry.
Perfect Music list-If you are like me, music is essential to a perfect road trip! I recently conducted a short survey with some of our staff and customers here at AutoSmart to prepare some music for your next road trip:
Rick Niksic- Me and Bobby McGee by Janis Joplin, and the entire album Trampoline by the Mavericks.
Mandi Oliver- Ants Marching by Dave Matthews
Steve Garrison- any 70-80’s rock
Dennis Caldwell- any 60-70’s, he loves the oldies!
Eric Storbeck -surfing with the Alien by Joe Satriani
Brittany Humphrey- Cruise by Florida Georgia Line and Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen
With all of these tips, your trip will be amazing!  Don’t forget that besides selling pre-owned vehicles, AutoSmart provides services such as detailing and tinting. So get those vehicles ready today!\

Time to Tint!
What do you blow your nose with?  Kleenex!  Where do you take phone messages?  On a post-it!  My point is that the industry over time has changed our mind on what a tissue is.  Most people call it a Kleenex, because that is the brand that is most commonly associated with it.  This is the same as 3M with post-its and 3M with window tinting.
We are the only authorized 3M dealer in the area.  3M offers a limited lifetime warranty on their product, and we are here to make sure that you love your new tint on your vehicle.  We carry different tint shades to meet your needs.  We can also tint as many windows as you need tinted!  Always keep in mind though; having windows tinted can be against the law if you do not follow the regulations set by the state of Illinois.  Remember you can always go darker, but keep in mind that you are at risk of being pulled over and getting a ticket.
See our website for the rest of the article The law in Illinois states: “Motorists can have 35% Visual Light Transmission (VLT) on all motor vehicle windows, except the front windshield, as long as no other window in the vehicle is tinted darker than 35%.”
Having your windows tinted can also preserve the interior of your vehicle.  The purpose of tint is to reduce the amount of light and heat that comes into the vehicle, so this will protect the interior of your vehicle from sun and weather damage.
So call today and set up an appointment to get your windows tinted, you will be amazed how great your vehicle will look and how cool it will be for those warm summer months.

Detailing your vehicle for the Summer in Oswego, IL
Wash the Undercarriage of your vehicle- Although our winter has not been too terrible this year, we all have accumulated salt on the undercarriage of our vehicles. It is a great idea to wash that out.  This will keep our vehicles running smoothly. Salt can cause rust and corrosion to our vehicle.  According to DMV.org, the main places that are affected by salt are:  the exhaust system, our Muffler, the Coil springs, sub-frame and Hydraulic brake system.
Check your tire pressure- Making sure that your tires are aired up is essential to the upkeep of your vehicle. Remember that heat expands and cold deflates our tires.  So when it is hot, make sure that your PSI is 3-5 lower, and in the winter it should be 3-5 PSI higher.
Check your fluids- make sure your windshield wiper fluid gets refilled immediately. The salt over the winter has depleted our fluids in our vehicle.   Also make sure that you check your brake fluid.  The winter takes a toll on our vehicles, and it is a good practice to check it when the weather gets nice.  Also take a look at your engine oil, coolant and the power steering fluid.
Empty everything out of your vehicle-Over the winter, we accumulate a lot of trash, and extra stuff in our vehicles. We have extra clothes, ice scrapers, umbrellas, blankets, etc.   Take 5 minutes to empty everything out so you can have your vehicle detailed. Also add a small bag or trash can, so you can prevent the trash pile up in the future.
Have your car detailed! We have a great detailer at AutoSmart.  He will hand wash your vehicle, remove contaminates from paint, recondition the paint, apply wax, clean and polish your wheels, clean the wheel wells, and clean the door and trunk jams.  The interior of your vehicle, and the mats and carpets, will be completely shampooed and deep cleaned. The seats will be treated, everything vacuumed, all vinyl protected and the glass will be cleaned.
Get rid of that dust and grime and give us a call for your detail appointment today! You will be blown away by how great your vehicle looks, it will look brand new!

Preparing your Vehicle’s tires for Summer!
Who is ready to open those windows and enjoy the breeze?  Go on summer vacation, take the boat out on the water, and work on their spring and summer tires.  You heard me right; did you know that you need to alter your tires by the season?
Let’s get those tires ready!  Here is everything you need to know about updating your tires for spring.
Proper Tire Tread
Tire tread is very important on the snow, but also in the rain. The law requires our tires to be at least 2/32”.  There are indicators on our tires in North America called wear bars that help indicate when it is time to replace our tires.  I think the easiest way to gauge this though, is with a penny.  Turn the penny, so Lincoln’s head is facing down, and place into the tread.  If Lincoln’s head is partially covered, you have enough tread in your tire.  You can also use a quarter.  Turn the quarter, so Washington’s head is facing down, and place into the tread.  If part of Washington’s head is covered by the tire, you have more than 4/32” tread remaining. You will want to test multiple areas on the tire, as well as all of your tires.  You can gauge uneven wear and tear on them by doing this.
In the winter, on the snowy terrain, our tires should have a minimum remaining tread of 5/32”.  This allows the snow to compact under the tire and be released.  If there is not enough tread, it will reduce the vehicles traction and mobility, causing more accidents.  Spring tires, should have a minimum remaining tread of 4/32”.  Spring brings rain, which bring hydroplaning.  Typically people who experience hydroplaning during the rain, will have tires that don’t meet this minimum tread requirement.  If the tread is too low, there is nowhere for the rain to escape causing your tire to ride on top of the water.
Tire Pressure
Did you know that the pressure in your tires should be 3-5 PSI higher in the winter?  Winter provides a host of not so fun driving conditions.  From ice to snow and everything in between, we are sometimes less responsive than on dry roads.  The 3-5 PSI higher helps our tires offset the less responsive driving and also provides more stability to the tire when driving through ice and snow.
Tire pressures are meant to be tested on cold tires!  This means that the pressure might be skewed if you test after you have been driving all day, or if your car was stored in the garage all night.  Be consistent when testing the pressure of your tires.  Remember that the air in our tires will expand when it is hot, and contract when it is cold.   So keep in mind, PSI in our tires is going down in winter and going up in summer!

Selling your Vehicle on Consignment in Oswego IL
Selling your Vehicle on Consignment in Oswego IL
Most people understand how a traditional consignment works. You drop off whatever you want to sell at the consignment store, whether it’s furniture, a book, or an old piece of jewelry, and let the consignment shop do all of the work. Once your item sells, you receive a check equal to the sale price of your item; less the fees you pay to the consignment store.
Recently, a growing trend towards auto consignment has emerged, based on the same simple model. The hassles of private car sales make vehicle consignment well worth considering, but as you might guess, having someone sell your used car is a lot different from having someone sell your old books. To professionally market a higher priced item like a car, requires significant prep work, product knowledge, and skills to facilitate negotiations, the ability to meet buyers’ needs for financing and service contracts, and a variety of other factors that complicate the sale process.
So, with all that said, how exactly does vehicle consignment work? Upon consignment of your motorcycle, car, truck, SUV, or RV, your vehicle is inspected. If necessary, a list of any repairs or cosmetic work to improve its value will be suggested to the seller. A market value analysis of your vehicle is completed, and a recommendation of an asking price is made.
Properly marketing your vehicle is critical to selling it quickly and at the right price. Auto consignment dealerships should have a professional customer service team that will meet all of your demands.  Some auto consignment dealers will photograph and list your car on Craigslist, Carsforsale.com, Autotrader.com, and other favorite websites that are frequented by car buyers. Some consignment dealers will offer to clean and detail services to get your vehicle showroom-ready before photographed and marketed to potential buyers.
Perhaps the biggest benefit of vehicle consignment dealers is that they handle the actual sale transaction. they usually handle all test drives, buyer inquiries, and DMV paperwork. These essential pieces to private party car sales can require a great deal of your time, and are best left to experienced consignors. Most dealerships will manage buyer negotiations, a valuable service that can be a tremendous comfort to buyers and sellers alike, as negotiating with strangers can be difficult. While some put buyers in direct contact with sellers, others act as a buffer between the two parties, making the transaction anonymous to both sides. The safest and process for the buyer and seller is to allow the consignment dealership to handle all negotiations, payment processing, and DMV paperwork.
Safety is a key concern in private party car sales, and consignment dealers protect sellers and buyers alike. Auto Consignment offers an attractive option for vehicle owners who would like to get more money for their car than the dealer trade-in price, as the vehicle will be marketed professionally without the traditional hassle and frustration of trying to sell it yourself.
