Head 2 Head: Justin Timberlake - You got it on
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Justin Timberlake has always provided us dancers with songs to groove and choreograph to even since his early career days with NSYNC. His return to the music industry with part 1 of his 20/20 Experience album was successful commercially and popular with the dancers around the world. Soon after the release, youtube was flooded with new videos of dancers sharing their take on a number of Timberlake’s hits. Some of the most notable videos include: Kyle Hanagami - “That girl”, Ian Eastwood - “Strawberry Bubblegum” and Brisbane’s very own Jasmine Meakin - “Suit & Tie.”
Luckily for these dancers... Timberlake soon released part 2 of the album just 4 months after the debut. Although part 2 did not have as much commercial success as part 1, the dance community welcomed the album with another great bombardment of dance interpretations on youtube. Popular songs that dancers have made choreography to include “Take back the night,” “TKO” and the chosen song for our new segment "You got it on."
Today we present to you our first HEAD 2 HEAD! For our debut Head2Head we present to you the contenders: Lance Savali and Laurence Kaiwai (AKA L&L) from the Misfits Dance Crew of New Zealand VS Brian Puspos representing Mos Wanted Crew from The United States.
LANCE AND LAURENCE
Lance and Laurence released this video just a couple of weeks after the release of the song. Their concept really set the benchmark for other choreographers that wanted to experiment with the song. Although the video is short and sweet, it is evident that aspects of the concept video were well planned and done intentionally. The choreography, setting and styling were coherent and gave the video a nice suave and smooth vibe. Short introduction at the beginning helps portray the narrative and set the scene but we don’t see any choreography until the 1 minute mark. Never the less, the wait is definitely worth it as their choreography consist of a good mix of beat hitting and lyrical movement. The choreography highlights their strong ability to work well with each others styles. Transitions are used well for a 2 man team and they each had their own moments to shine. Great choice in wardrobe as the white shirt and bright pants combination in front of a night dark background helped frame the dancers and it also complimented the theme of the concept. Plenty of shot angles were used to highlight certain parts of the dance which I feel was done just about right and didn’t distract the viewers from the choreography too much. The views on this video are not in proportion to the quality of the concept but this may be because they have only started uploading videos about 8 months ago and their subscriber list is only in it’s early stages of growth. Overall a successful collaboration with Rachel Soh Productions and if they continue to deliver concepts like this, it won’t be long until they are reaching the amount of viewers as some of the top dancers around the world.
BRIAN PUSPOS
A month later Brian Puspos uploaded his take on the song. Puspos has been on fire the last couple of years, with some of his concept videos being viewed over a million times. He has become a pioneer in the concept video game with his most recent few being very ambitious and experimental. Brian has been inclined to create pieces that were influenced by current events in his life and this concept was no exception. This video features for the 2nd time his new girlfriend and model Aja Dang. The video begins with a much longer introduction which runs for just under 4 minutes. This may have been a little too long for some inpatient viewers but we have to give props to Brian for his experimental ways and for not conforming to the conventions and rules of a typical concept video. The choreography is another solo piece which is set in a clothing boutique. The setting is nothing visually spectacular unlike his concept to “Own it,” but it is evident that his aim was to focus on the narrative and evoking a certain emotion in his viewers. The choreography style is very familiar if you have seen his previous work. Like always, Puspos uses unique angles and he keeps it interesting by switching up the musicality through out the piece. Being a solo piece, Puspos had to be more creative with his dancing fundamentals. Great use of the frame with his movements from each side while keeping a balance. Exceptional use of levels with some floor work involved. Overall a good vibe throughout the video and an easy narrative to follow. Another noteworthy collaboration with Commonless Productions which has already reached a quarter of a million views in just over a week.
Brian Puspos and L&L are both well respected in Australia. Brian has been here multiple times to teach/perform and just recently L&L have held their first Australian workshop. Both different takes to an underrated song there is no question that both concepts are well produced and are downright SLICK. Let us know who you think wins in this HEAD2HEAD and link us to other concepts of this song that we should know a
