FED-2 HEAVY CAMERA
The Soviet FED rangefinder program started during WWII as a response to the German Leica - both to boost internal Russian industry, and because embargo’s forbade sale or trade of German product during the war.
The FED-2 is an awesome rangefinder camera. Not quite the quality of the Leica, these cameras are cheap and plentiful making them fun to collect in all their variants. These cameras are great for those getting into film street photography and are distinctively durable as is to be expected from a Soviet design.
Interesting fact: there is a common (wrong) belief that these cameras were the product of child labour. That’s because the factory the FEDs came from is named the same as its former life as an orphanage.
Happy v-day yall

HAKKA! A quick Maori man for a school collab. I love the Maori culture and how well (to an outsider, anyway) it has integrated with anglo culture in New Zealand. New Zealand rugby teams’ hakka is great.

Final round begin! FIGHT!
This is a quick illo I did in anticipation of this coming semester at Sheridan. The last one here, and potentially ever! Kinda crazy how long this has been coming, but I hope to make it the best last semester I’ve ever had.

These are days 8-16 when I started to transition from a group I researched beforehand into new ones that I had to do on the fly. Pretty crazy! Most of these would take me between 20 minutes to 1 hour including the (sometimes lengthy) descriptions of each I had to write. All are done in Adobe Illustrator directly, without preliminary sketches. Kept things loose and flexible.
In order: 1. Yeti (caught mid fist bump with his cousin - Bigfoot) 2. La Lechuza 3. Ogopogo 4. Frogman 5. Momo 6. The Skunk Ape 7. the Jackelope 8. The Bladenboro Beast

In November of 2015 I started a month long mini-illustration project that catalogued all the greatest cryptids of North America. It was pretty fun diversion from the thesis project I was working on from the time, often made at the end of the day to warm down before sleep. I learned a bunch about both the cryptids themselves and my own work and overall it was pretty fun. You can find the full set of illustrations in order on my instagram @austin.shirtman along with proper descriptions of each. Check them out! 1. Waheela 2. Gnomes 3. Mothman 4. El Chupacabra 5. Adlet 6. the Jersey Devil 7. (one of my favourites) the Wendigo 8. Bigfoot

Some extremely quick spots I did to supplement a talk on Alberta’s oilsands I’ll be a part of tomorrow. It was nice for a change to do something outside of Adobe Illustrator.
