Verso being able to get Gustave's haircut is unfortunately something I find very funny. "Hey Maelle. You know how you're still grieving the recent, brutal death of your guardian, who was both brother and father figure? As I picked up his burned-out prosthetic from beside his lifeless murdered body I could not help but notice that his hairstyle was fresh as hell. Do you remember what products he used?"

I rarely see people talking about Expedition 33 characters in terms of their guilt, although in my opinion it is not the only one, but quite an important motivation of the entire Dessendre family. And this is especially true for Alicia and Verso (and I think it is no coincidence that we see them as two sides of the conflict in the finale). Moreover, the primary source of guilt is always love, they do desperate things because of the "love-pain of loss-guilt" connection.

For Alicia, it's a longing for the warm relationship she had with her brother (I like entire epilogue with her, it shows very well through interactions with objects how much pain she feels when she remembers Verso) and a sense of guilt for the fire that happened. Desire to help and fix something becomes one of her motives for stepping into the Canvas. And in my opinion, absolutely the same two motives are leading for her in the end ("let's be together, let me try to fix the situation for you" with reservations about her understanding of "fix" and the fact that this is not a real, but a painted Verso).

But if for Alicia her guilt is mostly concentrated on one person (although I think she also feels guilty towards the whole family), then for p.Verso it is even worse - he considers himself the cause of all the suffering in the Canvas and even outside of it. Aline does not want to leave because of him, she created Lumiere and all its inhabitants because of him, then it grows like a snowball, Renoir comes, Fracture happens, then gommage, where people die in thousands. His friends from Expedition 0 died because of him, Julie, all the expeditions with which he tried to reach the Monolith, Aline, and in exactly the same way Maelle will die in the future also because of him. Even a piece of Verso's soul suffers because of him. Painted Verso want to end his life not just because he is tired or bored of it, but because he believes that this way he will stop suffering of everyone around him, and especially those he loves.

Although in my opinion he loves everyone in the Canvas (there's so much warm in his dialogues with Noco, Monoco, Esquie). Most likely this is something they have in common with the real Verso. And I also recommend taking a closer look at the dialogues and cutscenes with Maelle too. He is always next to her, and in theirs conversations he constantly tries to support her, especially when Maelle is depressed (confronting her words about escapism and weirdness, telling a story about her name, scene at the Reacher "everyone in the family stands out in some way, and I ..." - "and you are dad's real favorite"), he remembers r.Verso's song and plays it, hoping that it will help her feel better.

Painted Verso loves both his families, but returning to the beginning of the post - it is love that pushes him to desperate actions. All his experience of 60 years, unfortunately sad, teaches him idea that the end justifies the means, and it is easier not to tell anyone his plans. Because, every time he tried to trust, everything turned into a disaster, and in the end, Aline returns to the Canvas again, and Maelle is also determined to die, but not to return to the real world. In his opinion, it is easier to just end everything: "Time heals all wounds, but death heals all wounds too". Those who die will be finally spared from present and future suffering, and those who remain alive will be able to move on. Yes, he has very negative thinking and trust issues due to trauma, but that's a topic for a whole separate essay.

Of course, he does not want a life where he will still have to bear the impossible weight of guilt for every death. Although there may be fewer of them in Maelle's ending, but the most important one - Maelle's death will always appear before his eyes when he looks at her.

P.S. It would also be interesting to study other family members and how guilt influenced their actions (especially Aline, I imagine she has one of the complex tangles of conflicting feelings), I hope I can make a separate post about them someday too.

Another area Clair Obscur scored gold in is pathetic men.

Gustave is only one moment away from ending it all 90% of the time, and in the remaining 10% he's actively trying to do it. He would say "If anything happens to Malle, I'm going to kill everyone in this room, and then myself" completely unironically and mean every word of it. He isn't only the oldest man in Luimere, but also absolutely the poor little meow meow-est.

Verso's aloof lone wolf TM persona does not survive five minutes of being in the team's general proximity. He folds like a particularly pliable piece of paper with the attempted nonchalance that's also paper-thin. I'd also bet a lot of money that if he was allowed to cry every time he wanted to (and needed to), the game's runtime would jump by at least five more hours.

And I think it's beautiful <3
