an explanation/exploration of her early story

the backstory of Primavera could've happened in a year or two most since we see how fast all of it moves, but all things considered Rose was likely very young when she joined in AT MOST around Nina's age. Claudia and Rose come off as peers, Meryl a bit older, Stella a bit older, and Amanda. the lack of narrative presence of other unnamed women doesn't help me visualise what these old days were like for them, but I do think Rose was present in here way back, around when she was orphaned, adding her to a long list of characters

so the (everything) around Rose could be in part that whoever was in charge of her (Amanda?) as reasonable adults would is like ok can we get her something to do while staying with us and she'll grow into the club eventually. that which doesn't happen as she expected but Rose finds her place

sounds a bit idealistic since: Nina but I think Nina right now is definitely older than Rose was. and I am just trying to make sense of backstory here... either way Rose had no other support system so see: Meijiu and what's a job for a child, dealing in death. in comparison, serving drinks or being an assistant or something at the brothel was really her lucking out in prospects... so of course this little group means the world to her, even as we see at that point her fellows like Stella or Meryl don't like her that much: they're growing into it

just objectively looking, this was a kid in terrible circumstances. in her own eyes, again re: Meijiu. both had some people looking after them, but in that regard "thank you for giving me a chance to live on my own terms or just at all" carries a lot...

also Rose taking in Wayne, a homeless boy and being portrayed as the only person to even look back on him was not just her kind heart but you guessed it, her mirror... I had that scene in mind since I first saw it in the manga. and he was the one to continue that with the wandering dogs...

I forgot if Rose lost her father in the disaster or before... I think I recall he was very old and didn't even live to see the war but I'm ??? I need it for a post that's been on my mind aka her backstory

Zilong is a bit of a Jessica I think. there's a lot about the standards one must live up to when "successor" is the first thing to define you and another way was never an option. still you can take the time to enjoy being a "normal" young person. there's more to add about specifically gendered standards... in the language around them in the story. and I'll elaborate eventually

I'm wondering about Meixue and Zilong now... when did they come to Tokyo? they're meant to have graduated together but Zilong was there in 1948 already while Meixue seems to have arrived in '49. maybe she was there too but off screen or more likely to me maybe she first went to China to be with her mysterious relatives? no idea tbh

CONCEPTUALLY and THEMATICALLY I prefer the strength of not-first love and a very gradual relationship buildup but ngl this is making me ill

despite what I've said before I really do want to elaborate on what I think the first arc would've looked like if it was building up Rose/Meijiu, as that would make for a very different dynamic... wouldn't prefer it but it's interesting to imagine
