An early rough draft of a story I have been ruminating on for YEARS

-Remember To Not Forget-

“The list. You almost left without the list again”

“I know, it just slips my mind. Besides I have the list memorized”

“If you can’t remember the list, then how can you be sure you have the list memorized?”

“After all this time and it’s never changed. At this point I have it built into my brain.”

“Well. For me then? Can you add taking the list to the list?”

“Of course, I’ll remember to not forget the list.”

-Rub The Sleep From Your Eyes-

A phrase blurred from the focus of my thoughts. Each time I attempted to reconstruct the words they became hazier. “Of course…..” I felt this phrase was the tie to conversation I needed to have at the front of my mind. The red string that led down into the dark hole inside my brain where the rest of the sentence was hiding slipped my grasp. As my concentration relaxed I hoped that ‘of course’ was even the right words.

With no more leads my focus automatically returned to monitoring the rest of me. That’s when I realized how cold I was. I rolled over to grab my blanket and rolled onto a sharp stone.

“What the-”

My eyes snapped open and saw I wasn’t in bed, much less what could be called a house. There were dense tall trees surrounding a clearing I and several others, who appeared to be sleeping, were in. The exhaustion of sleep was still weighing me down, but the alarm of not knowing where I was or how I quickly began to over take me.

“Hello?’ I timidly called out as I eased myself into a seated position.

The girl to my right snapped up yelling “I didn’t feed Canoe!” Startiling everyone else awake. A clamour of groans and muffled bewilderment filled the clearing.
