On September 23 Sweety's teamed up with Teatro LATEA to bring Jay Boogie for the release of his latest mixtape entitled "Jesus Loves Me Too" in concert. The event featured guest performer Jamal Lewis and musical accompaniment by Young Jimmy, Shariq, Kayne Prexise and Gusto. -----------~-----------~----------
JESUS LOVES ME TOO
Describing Jesus Loves Me Too as his clap back to all negative judgement passed on him and his retaliation against religious norms. Living proof that he has support from a higher being to express himself as he pleases regardless of how Christians, Catholics, Jehovahs Witnesses or any person who believes in god may feel about him. The sounds of JLMT punch homophobia right in the stomach with very candid and literal lyrical content. On songs like “So Happy” produced by MDLW, Boogie stands up to reclaim his energy from those who have tried to put a hex on it or deprive him from his happiness. This is Boogies second mixtape after My H.O.E., JLMT is released independently by Jay Boogie with the help and love of Jesus. https://soundcloud.com/jayboogala/sets/jesus-loves-me-too
JAY BOOGIE Born and raised in East New York, Brooklyn with Dominican and Colombian roots - Hip-Hop has been Boogie’s medium of expression for the past 4 years. With an album and a mix-tape under his belt, he has independently toured across American and Northern Europe, proudly celebrating his sexuality and his cultural background. Boogie has managed to organically cultivate an audience through his intellect and self awareness. Often described as “Flamboyantly Rugged” Jay Boogie does not have a problem being both the Beauty and The Beast of his generation with aspirations of spreading the unapologetic attitude around the globe and the ghettos across the universe. http://www.joelnewyork.com/ TEATRO LATEA Teatro LATEA (Latin American Theater Experiment Associates) is a theater production company, which for over 30 years has run its own performance/rehearsal space in The Clemente located in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Sweety’s Radio: Edicion Especial culminates with an exhibition showcasing the individual work of Sweety’s members. A group of friends and collaborators that came together to address the lack of spaces explicitly for black and brown artists, Sweety’s developed and continues to provide a platform for queer artists of color. In this final exhibition, the four members–Ximena Izquierdo Ugaz, Julia Mata, Bryan Rodriguez Cambana, Eduardo Restrepo Castaño–display recent work in a variety of media, including video, photography, textiles, and painting that explore personal histories through an understanding of time, horror, and mood. Having been active for nearly four years, the members have imminently been affected by their collective work, visible in their own practice/s.
This project is the fifth, and final, installment of Sweety’s Radio: Edición Especial, on view through July 30, 2017.

Elia Alba’s installation for Sweety’s Radio: Edición Especial will include three videos, Unruhe, Se Revela, Se Devela and Gigglers, all made between 2001 and 2010. These works show Alba’s manipulation of reality as fantasy and vice versa, always within a societal framework informing this dynamic. In Unruhe, Alba focuses on this German word, meaning unrest, to compose a dream-like scenario, using Super 8 and video, during which dolls are aggressively handled as they float on and move through the water. Se Revela, Se Devela expresses the idea of unmasking as a cultural practice that both contains and sustains the face. Gigglers, filmed on IslaMorada, examines fractured identities and adolescence through the laughter, play and the undeterred stare of four young girls wearing masks and wigs, floating in the ocean.
This project is the fourth installment of Sweety’s Radio: Edición Especial, on view through July 30, 2017.

This year marks the 20th anniversary Emanuel Xavier’s self-published chapbook Pier Queen, a poetic manifesto about his personal experiences coming of age as a former street hustler, drug dealer/addict, homeless youth and survivor of child abuse. To celebrate this LGBTQ Latinx and POC milestone, Rebel Satori Press has reissued the book with brand new cover art featuring a photograph by Richard Renaldi that captures the spirit and defiance of the Christopher Street West Side Highway piers. As part of Sweety’s Radio: Edicion Especialwe will be honoring the anniversary of this chapbook with an exhibition and reception. On Friday, July 14, Xavier will be joined by percussionist Joyce Jones to recreate the spirit of late 90s poetry readings from the book Pier Queen in celebration of the 20th Anniversary of this landmark collection by a former homeless pier queen who went on to become one of the most significant voices of the LGBT and Latinx poetry movements.
Drawn from Xavier’s personal archives as well as artists in conversation with his work, the exhibition spans several bodies of work from throughout Xavier’s career; from videos, event flyers, fan notes (from Walter Mercado, Parker Posey, Penny Arcade), memorabilia from that era as well as photographs by Richard Renaldi and artwork by Gabriel Garcia Roman.
On Wednesday July 12 from 6-8pm, we will host “Realness & Rhythms,” a throwback to one of the very first spoken word poetry series for LGBTQ people of color held in NYC at A Different Light Bookstore by Emanuel in the mid 90s. Held in honor of Emanuel’s practice as organizer, he and Sweety’s member Ximena Izquierdo Ugaz brought together the poets Nancy Mercado, Andres Chulisi Rodriguez, Khalin Vasquez & Freaky Haiku, who will each have 15 minutes on the mic.
On Friday, July 14 from 6-8pm, a reception will be held featuring a reading by Emanuel Xavier joined by percussionist Joyce Jones to recreate the spirit of late 90s poetry readings, and followed by an interview hosted by Sweety’s member Ximena Izquierdo Ugaz.
This project is the third installment of Sweety’s Radio: Edición Especial, on view through July 30, 2017.

Raul’s work on Lowriders in Space is done completely in ballpoint pen, a decision to reference his first tools as a young artist, often making fan art of comic book characters. For this interactive exhibition at Cuchifritos, Raul’s original illustrations from the “Lowriders” series will be installed in allusion to newsstand vendors’ displays in Ciudad Juarez, along with a wall that will be available for visitors to the gallery to draw characters from the series or create their own.
