Precursors to the Electric Iron
Today, it takes just a few minutes to plug in an electric iron, wait for it to heat, and then use it to quickly and consistently smooth out wrinkles or creases in fabric. For years, people have been using hot metal to do this, but only in the 20th century have they had the convenience of electric irons to do so.
Records trace people using hot metal to smooth fabric all the way back to 1st century B.C. China. But the irons that developed in western cultures, which would eventually evolve into the electric irons we know today, were slightly different from the Chinese precursor.
These irons were, of course, solid blocks of iron with a very flat edge. At first, the irons would be placed into the fire (or nestled into the coals of a fire) until hot, then Cordless Handheld Steamer Iron removed with a tool and used with a cloth wrapped carefully around the handle, to avoid burning.
The trouble with these early irons is that they would lose heat, and you would have to place them back into the fire or coals and wait for them to warm to be used again. One solution was the so-called "tailor's furnace," which had heating spots for several irons all around the side. When one iron was no longer hot, it would be placed back on the furnace and another iron would be picked up.
The next development was the coal-holding iron, which had a hollow space inside where hot coals were placed, allowing the iron to bring the heat source with it. This idea eventually developed into the electric iron that we know today.
