protecting others comes naturally to you. you’ve always done it, for the children hiding behind you with fear in their eyes, for the ones who can’t defend themselves against anyone bigger than them, even for the stray animals around the city. while you’re not particularly aggressive, you’ll fight tooth and nail for what you believe in. being a guard for the city seemed like the natural choice for you. years of training went by only to realize you were nothing more than city council’s muscle. this doesn’t sit well with you, and you think this may very well be your last assignment.
you are strong, courageous. you strongly believe in doing what is right, always, even when no one is watching.
connections
the rebel: you do not understand them, and it bothers you more than it should. you tell yourself it’s only because you’re trying to do your job, but there’s something about the way they look at you sometimes that makes you think they can see into your soul, and that scares you. the jester: they are young and naive. you only ever see them laughing, and you feel the protective instincts pulling you toward them. you’re not sure if it’s their personality or just their age, but you feel the need to ensure nothing bad happens to them, at least while you’re around to protect them. the lover: you find a bit of a kindred spirit in them. it’s a strange sort of friendship, the strangely rhythmic sounds of vegetables being chopped and blaster parts being snapped together, but it works. it’s comfortable.

you’re not sure where you’re from. maybe that’s why you’ve always been fascinated with exploration, with going places you’ve never gone before, learning all you can about everywhere you can in the fading hope that one of these places will feel right. something in the back of your head tells you that if you keep looking, eventually you’ll find what you’re looking for.
you are autonomous, ambitious. you’ve looked to the stars since you were little, wondering where you came from and why you were there. you promised yourself then that one day you would fly away from the chaos and find your answers.
connections
the innocent: you’re convinced they hate you. you’re not sure why, maybe you made an offhand comment when you met, maybe it’s as simple as a vixiri not trusting a cyborg. that thought would be enough for you to give up completely, except for the simple fact that you work together, and there has to be some sort of relationship for it to work. the hero: you admire that they’ve actually been out there and seen things most can’t imagine. part of you thinks you might be jealous of their carefree attitude, the confidence they exude. every time you work up the courage to ask them about the adventures you’re sure they’ve had, something happens and the opportunity is gone. the jester: the two of you have a couple of the same cybernetics, and that’s all it took for you to bond. while your personalities are wildly different, somehow it works. you can talk for hours, and you’re sure you’ve never met someone with their enthusiasm.

people are often surprised by you. reserved and studious, you don’t necessarily seem like the type to care for others. the stigma that comes with being a barsha doesn’t help that assumption, so when you show your true nature it tends to catch others off guard. it doesn’t really bother you, though. you’re too focused on your training for that. that’s partly why you’re here- your payment for this mission along with the credits you have saved, will pay for both your transport to baratta and your first two years at betelgeuse medical school.
you are compassionate, generous. you find peace by giving of yourself, but you have a tendency to give all you have until there is nothing left.
connections
the magician: they intimidated you at first, with their fancy degree from a fancier school, but now you see them for what they truly are- a determined, bookish nerd. as far as you’re concerned, nobody else needs to see past the mystical aura they emit. the jester: their zest for life is at once intriguing and overdone, bubbles of bright liquid floating in zero gravity. you’re not sure whether you like their sort of curiosity, their tendency to throw caution to the wind in favor of exploring anything that’s new. the rebel: you're surprised to find that you recognize their face. you know they have a tendency to leave behind a trail of blood, and you’ve dealt with their aftermath firsthand. you don’t trust them, and you can’t imagine a good reason why they’re on the ship.

the bones
you didn’t choose to be a cyborg. the first few months after the accident were hard; you had to get used to more than half of your body being made out of metal and a data chip in your brain in addition to the loss of your partner. some wounds never fully heal, but enough time passes and you keep busy, finding things to fill in the gaps in your life. one of those, surprisingly, is cooking. most are content to heat up an instant meal, but you find a quiet sort of calm in the rhythm and order that cooking with fresh ingredients brings. thanks in part to the data chip, you’re extremely organized, a trait that helps with your cooking and certainly helped you get this job.
you are passionate, dedicated. you feel that others wrongly assume that cyborgs are incapable of emotion, and you worry that you’ll never find someone who appreciates you even with all the metal keeping you alive. another part of you worries that you will.
connections
the jester: it’s almost painful to hear their laugh echoing around the ship. they’re so young, and they can’t understand the full ramifications of what they’ve done to their body. they don’t see what you do, that they’ve cut away a whole potential future. part of you wants to take them under your wing, protect them, help them start their life once the mission is over. the magician: you have a feeling you’ll get to know them very quickly, as your cyborg half seems to need near-constant maintenance. you’re not sure you mind, though- they are warm and driven and constantly surprise you, and you find yourself almost looking forward to your trips to the med bay. the ruler: the moment you met them you knew not to trust them. oh, they seem witty and charming, but there’s something unsettling behind those eyes. you’re not sure what it is, and you wonder if it’s something else, because everyone else seems to like them just fine.

a part of you longs for the old days, when the forests were still alive and real earthen paper readily available. you've heard that writing on organic earthen paper feels more authentic somehow- but how would you know? you'll never experience that. vexalian paper is the next best thing, but their trees aren’t quite the same, and overall you feel like the experience could be so much better. this isn’t an unfamiliar feeling to you- you crave the authenticity of times past, and are often disappointed by modern attempts to recreate lost culture.
you are creative, imaginative. your desire to create things of enduring value has sent you down a path walked by few these days, a path that everyone tells you will make you poorer. but you would rather live a life rich in experience than in credits. still, everyone needs to eat, so you take odd jobs that still allow you to create something.
connections
the sage: you’d never met them personally before this mission, but like most humans who grew up on earth, you’ve heard of their father. you were prepared for someone stern and commanding, not a soft-eyed person about your age. they’re tough, you’ll grant them that, but you’re not sure they’re ready for this. the rebel: they’ve only spoken to you twice, and one of those was an insult, but you can’t stop thinking about them. you’re almost positive that if the two of you sat down together and had a normal conversation, you could be really great friends- you just have to get close enough to do that, which will be challenging. the magician: they’re the last person you’d ever expect to grow close to, but you can feel a bond starting to grow between you. they ground you a little, keep you from floating away with your thoughts like you are prone to do.

some would say you’re a little rough around the edges. those people would be putting it very mildly. authority figures have never been trustworthy to you- growing up on the streets will do that to a person. you are volatile, dangerous; you take pleasure in shocking people. your shapeshifting abilities have certainly been useful for shock value, a series of petty crimes, and now for your budding mercenary career.
you were placed on the ship for one purpose: ensure the mission’s success at all costs. the human council that hired you for this job seemed very concerned about the whole thing, muttering things about ‘barsha meddling’ and ‘anti-human stunt’ under their breath. honestly, though, this is just another job to you, another source of credits. politics has never been your forte, and you’re not about to start now. your plan for now is to just get in, do your job, get home, collect your payment, and live like royalty for as long as you can.
connections
the hero: in another life, they would be exactly your type. you’re both full of fire and suppressed emotion, you would burn brightly but quickly. that can’t happen, though. you’re supposed to keep your head on your shoulders. after all, you have a mission to see through, and you don’t have time for distractions. the sage: a very small part of you feels bad for them, knowing the sort of pressure that must be on their thin shoulders. you understand what it’s like to be the only one of your species in a room, the one others turn to with invasive questions about “your kind,” the unofficial spokesperson for an entire species. the magician: they impress you- a vixiri raised on vexalia going against the traditions of your people is very rare, and takes a lot of strength. you’d be lying if you said they didn’t intimidate you a little, not that you’d ever tell anyone that.

you were always too curious for your own good, according to your mother. it was harmless until your closest friend contracted gatria plague. you couldn’t sit by and watch your friend die- so you broke tribal law and bought a set of medical books from a barsha trader. you were too late to save your friend, and there was never anything you could have done, for there is still no cure for gatria plague. shunned by your community, you left to attend the highly prestigious betelgeuse medical school on baratta. something in your brain clicked and you never looked back. now, you’ve made it your goal to eradicate the disease from the universe, and you don’t care how many more years of rigorous training you have left. maybe you're a little overqualified for this mission, but you've never been more excited.
you are visionary, inventive; you make things happen. the vixiri are not ready for you; you sometimes think you were born half a century too soon.
connections
the caregiver: you don’t recognize them from betelgeuse, and it didn’t take you very long to realize they don’t have much formal training. there’s a drive to them that you admire, though, and an unexpected vulnerability. the role of teacher is new to you, and you find you like it quite a lot, although it may be because you have an exceptionally eager student. the innocent: they remind you of your closest childhood friend, the one who was taken before their time. they’re not the same, but every now and then you catch yourself about to say the wrong name. the creator: many of the stories you’ve heard of humans emphasize their creativity, and you finally see why. the universe looks so different through their eyes- you didn’t realize it could be so beautiful.

you've been told your whole life that the stars belong to you. your species is faster, stronger, smarter, and deserves whatever it takes. growing up like this, it's impossible to think differently. it’s been scientifically proven that barsha brains are capable of processing more complex thought at a faster rate than any other species, so why shouldn’t you be in charge? it rubs you the wrong way that you are only the lieutenant, and to a human at that.
you are responsible, charismatic. power isn't everything to you, it's the only thing. the captain's chair was meant for you, and you'll be damned if you let it slip through your fingers.
connections
the sage: you can barely stand to look at them. you hate everything about them, including the fact that you have to play nice. if it were up to you, you would shove them into the airlock and be done with it. the orphan: they’re the kind of barsha you despise, the kind that doesn’t recognize their true potential and innate superiority. of course, it doesn’t help that they’re friendly with the captain. you wonder if you can use that to your advantage somehow. the hero: you thought you disliked them, if only because they are human, but you realize now you admire them. you see yourself in them, as much as you hate to admit it, and you want to see them succeed. of course, you can’t possibly reveal this to anyone else. a barsha has a reputation to uphold, after all.

studying histories of different cultures should leave you cynical, jaded from the sheer amount of violence each species is capable of. instead, you are more awed by the fact that each can rise up from the darkness and accomplish more than they ever thought possible. maybe this will be true for you, too, one day, surrounded as you are by traditions that no longer make sense in a quickly changing universe. you’re not the one to lead your kind into the new age, but you know someone should, and soon.
you are romantic, optimistic. life has not taken away your innocent wide-eyed stare, your thirst to ever know more, more, more about why creatures act the way they do.
connections
the jester: you weren’t sure about the cyborg at first, but now you’re inseparable. you know it can only last as long as the mission does, though, because you can’t let other, more traditionally minded vixiri see you with a cyborg. you’re not sure how to tell them, but deep down you think they already know. the rebel: if you’re being honest with yourself, they scare you. they remind you of every monster story your parents have ever told you, only somehow more terrifying because they are real. you feel a little guilty for avoiding them, convincing yourself it’s because you’re really far too busy with your work. the explorer: working with them is awkward and uncomfortable. you’re not sure if it was a misunderstanding when you met, or if they just don’t like you, but every time you have to be in the same room you can’t help but notice the tension between you. it bothers you; your personalities and goals are similar enough that you should get along fine.

some are happy because they can’t help it, others because they try too hard to mask the darkness within. you’re the latter. you were never enough so you learned to fill the gaps with confidence, with cybernetic enhancements, with laughter and forced smiles. eventually the bravado became real and it’s paid off, you’re so very young even by human standards and look where you are, surrounded by people you’re sure know far much more than you do.
this mission means more to you than you can say. if you succeed, maybe you can stop trying to be more than you are, but if you fail- you try not to think about what would happen then.
connections
the orphan: you’ve been working with them for almost a year now, and in that time you’ve grown to think of them more as an older sibling than a boss. they put up with your constant joking around in the shop, something you know must bother them deep down inside. the lover: you’re not sure you’ve ever seen someone who is more metal than flesh- and who seems so very sad. you’re drawn to them, and quietly resolve to make them smile at least once before the mission is over. the innocent: your carefree, easygoing personality fits perfectly with their dreamy, optimistic views. the two of you quickly became close, and you can’t imagine life without them. you try not to think about what will happen when the mission is over.

species: human home planet: earth name: andromeda martina faceclaim: ashley moore
biography
born to a long line of military commanders, it was your destiny to follow in their footsteps. there was never another option- but you never felt stifled. leading, analyzing, making rational decisions in the face of panic, this suits you as it suited your father before you. any encouragement to follow your own separate dreams is gone, your only memories of your mother stale and blue-toned. technology may have come far, but there is still no cure for cancer.
you’ve dedicated years of your life to doing this the hard way, refusing to float on the current of your name, starting from the very bottom as a private, slowly rising in the ranks. when you completed your officer training, your father saluted you for the first time in your life, and you’ve never been so happy. he is proud of you in his own way, still cold and distant, but you swear you see him smile during your ceremonies. he has great plans for you, and you don’t mind enough to resist. besides, who wouldn’t want to make history?
now, you are one of the first humans to command an alien ship on a mission this big. you feel the pressure of a million eyes and an entire generation looking up to you, for if you fail, it will be that much harder for a human to command an alien ship again. you’ve been training your whole life for this- an achievement many of the aliens see as nothing more than a decorative pin. they don’t respect your rank the way they should, and you try not to let it bother you, but it does.
the bones
this mission is a chance for you to prove to yourself and the collective that humans can be just as good as -if not better than- the barsha. it’s also your first real task since completing your training. you know there are individuals that would love nothing more than to see you fail, and you suspect some of them may even attempt to sabotage the mission. this is the most difficult challenge you’ve ever faced. your father believes in you, so why doesn’t that feel like enough?
you are wise and contemplative. you value intelligence and rational thought, and seek to find the truth in all things.
connections
the orphan: it’s said they’re the best mechanic on baratta. you’re not sure about that- but there’s certainly something in the way they understand technology that seems extraordinary. their realism grounds you, and for the first time in your life you feel connected to someone. the hero: they were the first one you hired. you’ve long admired their ideals, their work ethic, their commitment to doing what is right. you fear their arrogance will get them in trouble, and perhaps that’s one of the reasons you brought them with you. the ruler: the barsha have always intimidated you, quickly doing with ease what you spent years learning how to do. this one is no different, if a bit more arrogant than others you've met. they’re one of the best, but they’re cocky, a trait you normally wouldn’t like in a lieutenant, but you’re willing to put those things aside for the good of the mission. you only hope they are as willing.
