Someone slipping while trying desperately to run away, scraping their hands and knees in the damp pavement in the process

A character huddled in their coat, soaked to the bone and shivering as close to a wall as they can to gain a bit of the building's shelter -- just waiting for the bus, or in a much more dire situation?

Sick characters having to get from one place to another in the pouring rain, chills getting a hundred times worse the longer they're outside

Characters realizing they're sick once they're stuck in the rain--and it's a long way from home

Fights happening in a wet, rainy alleyway; punches clumsy, feet slipping, desperate stumbling and gripping

A whumpee being found outside on a rainy night and clinging to their rescuer with cold, damp fingers

Freezing rain that makes roads more slippery, crusts the world in ice

Rain cold enough to cause hypothermia -- a blue-lipped, trembling whumpee staggering home through a freezing cold downpoar

no but whumpee having phantom pain hours or days after being magically insta healed because their brain hasn't caught up with their body. because injuries aren't meant to just go away. because there's no way to properly adjust that fast. because surely they must still be hurt

and they feel horrible for taking time off / struggling because they are externally perfectly fine do you see my vision

Give me whumpees who are angry, dysregulated, and horrible during recovery.

I love a quiet and anxious whumpee as much as the next person, but whumpees that are explosive and upset hit so much harder for me. It's really difficult to be a nice person when you're dealing with so much mental and/or physical trauma.* Pain makes you a bitch. It's frustrating. It hurts. At some point, whumpee is going to snap.

Shoving people away. Yelling. Violent outbursts, throwing things, reckless behaviour. Caretaker doesn't know what to do or how to leave. Whumpee doesn't know how to stop or make it any better.

They're fighting, again, and whumpee is yelling and shouting because they're trying to make themselves understood, but they can't find the words to articulate it so they have to show the feeling instead. Caretaker is tired of being on the receiving end of it so they're shouting back, which just makes both of them more upset.

And then whumpee finally manages to put the thing into words, stunning them both into silence, before whumpee starts apologising profusely. The whole time they'd just wanted to be understood but couldn't explain themselves and being vulnerable is terrifying and "I never wanted to hurt you too."

Idk just give me dysregulated whumpees.

*this is not saying you cannot be a nice person with trauma, or that trauma makes you a bad person. this is saying that when you're so overwhelmed and constantly in fight or flight, it can be very difficult to be rational or considerate. it happens. that's ok.

you know what whump trope I love?

the same dialogue being used for both whumper and caretaker, but in very different contexts!

“This’ll hurt,” (Before being tortured / before taking off a Bandaid)

“Don’t move.” (While whumper restrains them / while caretaker brushes their hair)

“Quiet down.” (Whumper yelling at sobbing whumpee / caretaker gently shushing excited whumpee)

“They’re not coming for you.” (Whumper telling them no one will save them / Caretaker telling them no one will kidnap them)

“I’m only trying to help.” (Whumper pretending to take care of them / Caretaker actually taking care of them)

“You’ll never see them again.” (Whumper mocking them / Caretaker reassuring them)

Fun quirks to give your whumpee:

Never sleeps/lies on their back: a habit they developed when the scars on their back were healing. This could also apply to leaning on the backrest of a chair. Instead they sit bolt upright or slouch over the table.

Holds anything fragile like a glass or a plate with both hands at all times because their grip is no longer strong enough to hold it with just one.

Their pyjamas look like day clothes so they can pretend they're functional when they don't have the energy/motivation/mobility to get dressed.

They have no mirrors in their house because they've changed so much since being with Whumper that they don't recognise themself anymore, and they can't stand being reminded of it.

Alternatively, they have mirrors everywhere so they can always see over their shoulder for any potential threat.

Memory in whump

Whumpee who has been changed so much by Whumper that they don’t even remember the person they used to be.

Whumpee in captivity constantly thinking of Caretaker’s face and voice so they won’t forget them.

Whumper erasing Whumpee’s memories (accidentally or intentionally) which leaves Whumpee dependent and impressionable.

Whumpee with suppressed trauma having their memory triggered and suffering flashbacks. (Does this happen around Caretaker or Whumper?)

Whumpee who goes back years later to take revenge on Whumper, only to find they’ve no idea who they are— Whumpee is just one of many victims.

Whumpee forgetting crucial details about their ordeal that would help identify Whumper.

Caretaker having to look after a Whumpee who doesn’t remember them, despite how untrusting and afraid they are.

Whumpee returning to their friends/family after escaping Whumper only to find that they’ve been forgotten. (This could be literal, or in the sense that everyone just gave up hope on finding them.)

Little habits whumpee may not realise is a result of trauma

-Always knowing where every exit is. And always being near an exit.

-Always keeping their back to the wall, never wanting to be caught in an open space.

-Obsessively locking every door, every window, even their own bedroom. They won't relax otherwise.

-Brushing off compliments.

-Being overly defensive.

-Extreme independence. Never relying on anyone, they are fully capable of doing things alone and they are determined to

-Walking quickly. Never lingering, not even for a moment.

-Standing hunched, head down, making themselves as small and inconspicuous as possible. They wear loose, basic clothing, trying to both hide themselves and not stand out

-Lapses in memory. Especially not remembering childhood memories

-Never expressing excitement or want for anything. Never hoping for anything.

-In the same vein, never admit to enjoying anything. They fear they will be mocked, or it will be taken away. Anything can be used against them in some way.

-Being excellent in a crisis, even if they panic in minor situations.

-Perfectionism.

-Silent crying.

Whumpee is able to provide a little too much information about Whumper during team meetings. Details that seem too personal to be dug out of research alone... the kind one would only know if they knew Whumper closely.

Team begin to suspect Whumpee is a traitor, a double agent. They stop listening to Whumpee's advice and suggestions during meetings because they think Whumpee is trying to trick them into one of Whumper's traps.

Now imagine the look on the Team's faces when they're captured because they didn't take the precautions Whumpee told them to.

Imagine the look on their faces when Whumper walks past all of them and goes straight to Whumpee because "It's so good to have you back, darling. I've missed you."

And Whumpee flinches.

as much as i like it when whumpee has been burned one too many times and resolves to never get close to anyone ever again, i think i prefer when the opposite happens. when despite all the betrayals, all the abuse, all the neglect, whumpee is jumping headfirst into every relationship, platonic or romantic, with a big stupid grin - or rather, because of all the betrayals abuse and neglect. pretty much all of the important people in whumpees life so far have treated them like less than shit, so whenever someone comes along and treats whumpee like a human being with feelings, whenever someone is actually nice to them, they’re immediately attached for life. no matter if they turn out to be horrible people who preyed on whumpees vulnerability and desperate desire for love and affection only to demean and ridicule and hurt them
