Motivation, in it’s purest form, cannot be forced or drawn out of someone so suddenly. It takes time to look for things to give us the strength to draw and create again, and that’s totally valid! In my experience, forcing yourself to draw when you’ve just recently come out of a sad or exhausting slump only makes you more frustrated at yourself. As said in the song from Frozen, “People make bad choices when they’re mad, or scared, or stressed,” do not, and I mean do not, start painting or drawing an important artwork when you know that you are just forcing yourself. It may feel like you’re being productive by forcing your hand to draw when you don’t want to, but it’s not! At the end of the day, when you see your half-assed painting, you’ll just feel more unmotivated and disappointed at yourself, and no one wants that.
My tip for overcoming lack of motivation is by resting and indulging yourself. Take a long nap and drink something cold and fresh to soothe your mind. When you feel relaxed, you feel more enthusiastic in starting your art process. You think more clearly and your plans are more organized compared to when you’re stressing yourself about not being productive enough.
Moving on, you say you’re looking for tips to improve your shading? There are many ways to do that, so here are some of the most important things to remember when starting to shade.
1. Always use a reference.
You may think that you already know how to shade an arm or a leg, but in most cases, a lot of people get it wrong on the first try. In order to make it look accurate, search for real pictures of these body parts and study where and how light and shadow falls on each section.
Tumblr media
2. Limit your use of black for shadows.
Look around you. The shadow of every object you see isn’t always necessarily black. Yellow looks orange when darken, pink looks red, blue looks purple, and so on! You have to be experimental when it comes to color, or else your piece would look muddy if you keep using black for all shading.

3. Decide if you want to use a painting style or cell shading.
Study techniques of other artists and try them on your own art pieces! There are artists who use several brushes to blend their shadows, while there are some who use only one brush to create shades.

4. Study the program you are using.
Art programs all have different assets embedded in them to further help you with your art. Take your time to play around and see which settings work best with you.

BENTLEE:
You can brush up on all the techniques and secrets you may find, but a good artist, deep within, knows how to break expectations.
Have you ever wondered why Pixar could always keep you invested in each story they release? It’s because they never lost that childhood spark—that little flame within each of us that yearns to tell stories and explore different concepts. Many people grow up losing that spark, but there are a few who are able to keep their candles flowing, and some even making it grow into a huge flame.
What I’m trying to say is that you have to practice storytelling. Push yourself to add stories to each drawing you create—draw for the sake of learning, developing, and changing, If you ask me how one could become up to be an amazing artist, then I would say to just never be one. Be yourself! Treasure and exercise the youthful brain you have now day by day, and help yourself grow into an imaginative and flexible artist when the time comes.

BENTLEE:
From my experience, the most efficient way to work with it is by forcing yourself to stop making it a complete replica of the original sketch. You get what I mean?
Let your hand relax and do not worry too much about the imperfections of your linework. You can always line over them again, or simply just color above it to make your workflow move more productively. Spending too much time on one area of your whole illustration will tire you out and leave you too exhausted to do the other parts of the drawing,
Another point is that linework doesn’t always have to mean perfect lines for everyone. I mean look at comic book artists and manga artists and then compare how they utilize lines. Comic artists use it to emphasize shape and movements especially in wide shots—making use of thick, messy, bold, and repeated lines—while manga artists use thin and controlled ones to emphasize emotion and detail in close-up shots.
Maybe the thing that’s holding you back is that you’re only utilizing one type of line art. You’re feeling frustrated because you can’t recreate the visual you are imagining in your head—which leads you to forcing yourself to draw and draw until you get it right. In some cases, that’s a good thing—because you’re pushing yourself to do better and never settling for average. But in terms of well-being and health, sometimes we just have to let things be imperfect, and try again in the next illustration, and so on.
Your last art won’t be the one you are currently making now anyway, so take up all the chances you’ll be given and practice.

PAISLEE:
And that is- TO PRACTICE DRAWING THE TRADITIONAL WAY! :D As we all know, digital art has been making life easier since we can resize, undo, redo- do almost anything when drawing/painting- BUT! Because of that we've become too dependent on these commands, so going back to pen-and-paper can help us be more independent and because we can't undo inking in real life, this would be great practice for us to not make too much mistakes. I hope this helps!

I'm not much familiar with drawing or making art actually. So uhh...I don't understand the question (IAMSOSORRY!!)
I admire art though and I especially like the work placed into it! I hope you find a way to make those lines smoother and having time to work efficiently. We appreciate what you said about our blog though! <3
