I'm an ESTJ, but I can't relate to the stereotype that we're hooked on past trends all the time. I mistyped as an intuitive a few times because I've always considered myself a future-oriented person with goals I'm determined to achieve. I've got several abstract future plans. What's the difference between the way sensors and intuitives approach the future?

The past trends thing applies more to SFJs than STJs, since Te adopts and/or adapts to any system that works better with proven results – so to an STJ, the past is dead and holds no sentimentality for how it worked, if it’s no longer relevant on a cultural level. Low Ti is more inclined to hold onto older methods, since it requires effort for low Ti to shift its thinking and adapt to new methods.

Intuitives have a less grounded or realistic expectation about the future, due to their idealism – they tend to want change too quickly and/or something that is not culturally possible or within their ability to accomplish, owing to being N… dreamers more than “aware of reality.” ENTJs do have Te and Se to ground them a bit more, but still can have too high of expectations. An ESTJ knows how the world works and how to navigate in it and sets more realistic goals based on what they know they can accomplish.

If it sounds like I am favoring sensors of late, in a way I am, because I am sick of the “intuitive bias” that continues circulating around tumblr. No, intuitives are not any smarter than sensors. In fact, they find it harder to figure out how the real world worlds in order to accomplish doing things in it. Yes, they tend to see the big picture more clearly and focus on how to bring about change, but that is not brilliantly useful unless you get some sensors on board to deal with details.

what would a isfp 4w5 look/act like?

Emotional but subdued; 4w5 represses emotions and keeps them inside, which Fi also does naturally, so intense, deep, piercing inner emotions, tends to rationalize with the 5 wing, pull away from others, self-contained. Drawn to act on these feelings with Se, can be impulsive at times. Broody. Less broadcasting of feelings and more internal mulling on them. Physically active, especially in chasing and then pulling away from others. Fierce sense of individuality, feels broken and imperfect, separate from others, must learn to let themselves be loved and not dwell in their sadness or invent angst out of a desire to stay sad. Lots of them, character wise. Angel. Ophelia. Bella Swann.

The 4w3 is Fanny from Bright Star. Much more “sharing” of her feelings (”Mama, Fanny wants a knife.” “Why?” “She says to slit her wrists with!”), but also the 3 wing desire to impress, stand out, sell herself as unique. She spends all her free time creating her own clothing and wearing them proudly, finding some way to set herself apart in her appearance (3 + Se). A lot of clothing designers are 4w3 SFPs. Much emphasis on beauty, self-torture, depth, expression of self through clothing, “huge” emotions, the bigger the better. Same issues with darkness, self-hatred, elitism, sense of alienation, brokenness and not being wanted by others.

Do you as ISFP obsess sometimes over future? I know my Ni is running wild without seeing possible future, something I like, love, and what could be practical the same way. I can't understand if I'm looping as ISFP or am I in a grip as ESFP. Yes, ai haven't got good extrovertion and exciting things to do in a long time, but it also has to do with me not liking what I do now, and Ni with Fi screams you need a purpose and a passion for your life and this isn't it. Does this happen to you?

Oh yeah for sure! I wouldn’t necessarily say this is exclusive to any type in particular, but I can definitely see it happening in both types you’ve mentioned. What I will say is, if considering certain future paths disgusts you instantly because they don’t feel like your purpose, I would assume it’s more Fi-dom leaning. Dom-Se doesn’t have a judgment function to filter through, so there’s a lot less resistance to seriously considering paths they aren’t already emotionally attatched to.

- probably most common type irl - really kind eyes and kind smile, slightly cheeky/mischievous, but always genuine looking - smile mostly with closed lips in public, smile more openly when they feel comfortable - abundance of round and soft features (e.g. eyebrows shaped in a gentle bow, round full cheeks) - men can appear quite feminine - for white people smile wrinkles can be already seen in their late 20s - look trustworthy, like they would be good parents - the kind of people you would ask for directions if you were a tourist in a foreign city

Hi! I've been wondering about the so/sp/sx aspect of the enneagram. I've been assuming I'm sp/so, because I'm aroace and thought that meant I had to be sx-blind, but I really don't relate to any sp stuff I've seen--like, at all. Is it possible to want a sx-bond that has nothing to do with sex or romance? And how do you tell the difference between the so desire to maintain an image and social anxiety? (If it helps for reference, I'm an INFP 9/5/maybe 3, no clue about wings)

Let’s simplify it in terms of, how do you survive?

Soc: Like a Lion

Lions are social cats. They bond together to ensure the survival of the pride. Soc thinks in these terms – I survive in relation to my position within the group. What group it is depends on the person who uses soc. Soc for one person might be their peer group, their social contacts at work, their friends (I can always call on one of my social contacts when I have a need, and they will meet it), or their family. As a soc-first, my own mindset is “if the family survives, I survive.” I am willing to give up resources, time, and effort to ensure the survival of my family. I am “family first,” everyone else second. That’s my soc.

Sx: Like a Wolf

You know that wolves mate for life, right? They choose and stick with the wolf that attracts their eye. They are fierce but also dependent. If you feel like having a partner is essential for your survival in the outside world, it’s likely you have sx. Sx is not always about “finding a mate,” it’s about a wolfish instinct about who you are drawn to, who is “your kind of person,” who you have instant chemistry with, who maintains your interest the most, and who you can pull energy from, on a one-on-one basis. Like a wolf seeking intensity from their mate. If you feel incomplete without a romantic partner, you likely have sx.

SP: Like a Bear

Although mother bears are highly protective over their cubs, sooner or later the cubs leave to have their own life. Bears are not very social. They live alone and roam over enormous swaths of land. Their look after themselves first. It’s all about storing up enough fat to survive the winter through hibernation. SPs are like bears. It’s about their physical, emotional, and financial needs. Those come before anything else. SPs want total independence and usually maintain it. They shut out anything that threatens to infringe on that. I care for myself.

Which combination are you?

You should have a sense of identity with one of those right off the bat, which means it is your core. To determine the second instinct, look at what you would do “next” in order to survive. Which one would you gravitate toward first? Some Enneagram teachers (including Rohr, who I think is the best) believe you use all three instincts in terms of those three areas of your life (soc in social groups, sx in romantic relationships, and sp in independence), but that your first instinct comes the most naturally to you, and your second is where you would go if you couldn’t use the first one.

As an example, I’m so/sp. I know this because when I think how I intend to survive if my soc (family) ever fails (financially, or they all die), I instantly think about independence vs. a romantic partner. Given a choice between sx and sp, I would choose sp / independence – I would find it more instinctive to look after myself (and already do) than to find a partner.
