How COVID 19 affected people around the world.
Do we even remember what life without COVID is? It has been so long that at this point I feel like the mask is part of our life forever. Life before COVID was amazing, we were able to be with family, friends and do stuff that we liked. Now, we are scared to even be outside or to even talk to someone because we aren't sure if it’s safe.
As we all know, COVID 19 has changed everyone’s life and not to better but to worse. Everyone in this world has been affected bad, we have lost a lot of life’s, families that have been separated for over a year. Our life has been paused for a whole year. Dr. Tedros stated that the way in which we lived was characterized as a pandemic (Maria Cohut, 2021). COVID 19 became a big deal on March 11, 2020; this is when everything stopped, people lost their jobs, people that worked at the offices had to work from home and children that were going to school had to take classes online. Even for the college students, they had to take classes online too. Everything happened so fast, people were asking questions but there weren’t answers to them due to them not knowing anything about this virus. Even until this day, the doctors are not sure what COVID 19 is but every day they are learning from it, they are learning how to deal it, how to treat people and how to control it. The one thing that they have always said about this virus is that it causes severe illness and even death. In some groups, people that are already sick meaning if they have an illness, their risk of severe illness increases.
One way that this virus affected our life was, people having to work from home. We all think that this is something amazing, that it’s the best because we don’t have to go out or even get up from bed, but this truly affect a lot of people. There was a study that was done in November 2020, in which the rapid review was to review the impact of working at home on individuals’ workers mental and physical health (Jodi Oakman, 2020). The method that was used for this study was that they used three data bases which were PsychInfo, ProQuest and Web of science. The data was based on 2007-2020. The people that were involved in this study was employees that regularly worked from home and specifically reported on physical or mental health related outcomes (Jodi Oakman, 2020). The results from this whole study were that 23 papers met the selection criteria for the review, 10 health outcomes reported pain, self-reported health, safety, stress, depression, fatigue, quality of life, strain, and happiness. They also stated that woman was likely to experience improved health outcomes when working at home (Jodi Oakman, 2020). As you see, the impacts of working at home were very considerably. The opportunity for them to communicate with each other like managers with their team and even in between colleagues is very important. People need to communicate with one another, especially if they are working; sometimes they have questions but who are they going to ask? If they no one around them.
The same way that this virus affected our life, it also affected families and children. In children it raised their anxiety and tension in parenting relationships. The parents and the children also faced new stress because the parents were worried about protecting their love ones from this virus. Something that became a big thing was when children had to stay home and take their classes at home. This became a problem because parents had to decide in between them staying home or not. The reason they had to pick was because everything was closed, there was no day cares at the time. There was another issue by all this, there was some challenges related to food security for some children. As we know, there are some children that are homeless or their families don’t have enough money to provide for food and the way they got food was from school, so when all this happened; they had no support. People have recommended that psychological services that include social, school, and family systems to be provided rather its direct or indirect services a d resources that support children and the parents. In the article (PhD, 2020), it stated that there was a survey that was done from June 5 to June 10, 2020. 1,011 parents responded 26.9% of their mental health had worsened, 14.3% said their children behavioral health had declined and 9.6% said both their mental and their children’s behavioral health had worsened (PhD, 2020).
This affected me and my family too. It was a hard year but I’m sure everyone had a bad year and others had the worst experience. In my case, my mother was the first one that got COVID 19 and by this time the virus was very bad and there was nothing to help people that were sick. My mom got sick, and it was the worst because I couldn’t be there with her to take care of her. It took almost 2 months for me to be reunited with her and finally be together. But even after all this happened, we still couldn’t spend holidays together because later I got COVID 19; I am very grateful that it didn’t affect me bad, and I was able to recover from it because I have asthma. It took me 23 days to be clear, that’s a long time. While I was going through this, I was going crazy in my room because I was alone and I was not able to go outside or even out the room. The food that was given to me was left at my door, if I had to go to the bathroom; I had to call my family members so that they knew that I was going outside and they wouldn't come near me. After a while; I would get so annoyed because I had to clean everything after I touched it. My days were going by so slow because I had no one to talk too, I would only FaceTime my mom and even my boyfriend because I had no one to talk too. I was in the room and I was thinking about people in jail, like how are they able to be in a locked room with no sunlight or anything? this is one of the reasons why they go crazy. This is when I noticed how important it is to have communication with people; even if you just go outside and see people you don’t know.
This was the day that I went to the hospital and found out that I had COVID, as you could see my eyes were very swollen because the fever was very high, I was literally shaking from it.
This was day 14, I WAS OVER IT because my tests kept coming POSITIVE and I was ready to start my day without COVID but it didn't go as planned.
Sometimes I feel like people don’t understand how serious COVID is, you don’t even have to go through it in order for you to understand it. There has been so many deaths from 2019-2021, that it broke a lot of families. 2020 was a weird year because we couldn’t do anything with our family and if there was something going on; people wouldn’t want to go due to this whole thing. It also affected me because I lost my job after working from home for almost a whole year. As we know, companies lost a lot of money and they had to close or laid people off. It has been a hard year but I’m happy that I am here and that my family was able to over this.

What It’s Like To Be A Latino
What does Latino mean? A lot of people think that Hispanic and Latino are the same thing or that they mean the same thing, but they actually don’t. Hispanic refers to people who speak Spanish, while Latino refers to people who are from Latin America. This is a term that is referred to geography and this is a short term for the word “Latinoamericano.” Anyone that comes from Central or South American and the Caribbean can be described as Latino. One thing you need to know is that, today in the United States the term “Latino” is used to describe race; the same way that we use the terms white, black or Asian.
See, I was born in the United States, but my parents were born in Honduras. They got lucky and had the opportunity to be here and raise me here. Growing up, my mom made sure that I wouldn’t forget our culture. She made sure that I was aware of it and that I knew about it. As you know, certain families don’t teach their kids about their background or to even speak Spanish. Once they are here, they forget about all that, but not in my case; I was raised in a Latin Culture. But my mom also made sure that I knew about my roots from here, she knew that it was important because this is where I was born at, this is my place, but I have a big spot in my heart for my mom home country. Maybe because growing up; I would always spend my summers over there, I would spend a lot of time in Honduras, so I grew up with that and it stood with me. There is this article that it talks about growing up as a Latino, it’s called “Young Latinos: Born in the U.S., carving their own identity.” This article talks about a lot of stuff that I could relate too. The article stated, “These young Latinos are U.S born, going through U.S schools,” Lopez said, “yet they grew up in Latino households.” When I was little, my first language was Spanish because my parents thought that in school, I would learn English and at home, I had to speak Spanish. I wasn’t allowed to speak English at my house, which made it harder for me because I was so young that sometimes I would forget how to say certain words in English, but I would know them in Spanish.
Every parent raises their children differently. I was raised to know about my roots but then there’s other parents that they don’t want their children to know about their roots. They want them to be more American than anything else. This is where the issue comes because let’s say the mom wants her children to be more American and the dad doesn’t agree, the children are the ones that end up confused because they are being pulled to different directions. They aren’t able to be themselves but sometimes; the parent could feel the pressure due to everything that happens in this world. If you are Hispanic, and you don’t speak the right Spanish or if you mispronounced a word, you are judged. It’s like the world expects you to be perfect because you have two different roots in you.
The same way that parents raise their children differently, there is also people from different religion, people that do things differently and have different believes. This is something that is not talked about a lot because it’s just a silence topic. As you know, there is different religions in this world but the most common ones for a Latino household would be Christian or Catholic. They are both very different, they have different rules that you must follow. As I was growing up, my mom didn’t force me to believe in anything, she let me experience so that I could know what it was that I liked. Which it’s something that I respect her for because she didn’t get in the middle of it and let me be me. Now on the other side, other parents don’t respect that because they believe that their children must follow what they do. My best friend is the perfect example of it. Her parents are Christian, and they all had to do the same as them. It wasn’t a question asked but something that had to be followed. I was able to ask her through texts, so you guys could read a little of how it is for her. My question to her was
“Since you grew up in a Christian household, and your parents are very strict about it, how has it been and how do you feel about it?”
You would be surprised of the percentage of Latino in New York City; it is actually 29% and the population is comprised of Puerto Ricans and Dominicans. If you combined them together, they represent half of the Latinos in New York City. Hispanics are the 2nd largest racial/ethnic group in New York City.
This is a chart that I found on the internet:
Young Latinos have a big dream, they want to make this place a better place and help others. Sometimes they see what their parents go through and this pushes them to do better and to help other Latinos that need the help. What do I mean by this? An example is have you guys ever been to the doctors with your parents, and you have to go with them because no one in the office speaks Spanish? This is an issue that is everywhere, and I for sure see it everywhere that I go. Children that grow up seeing this, they want to be able to help; they want to be a doctor and be that one doctor that speaks two language. Sometimes people don’t realize that Latino parents came here for their children to have a better future, they have worked all their life’s and didn’t have time to study English. These are parents that came here when they were grown already, and we all know how hard it is to learn a new language at a certain age.

Before Night Falls/ Cuban Revolution
Before Night Falls
1. What’s the tone of the pieces? The atmosphere? What does it feel like to read?
- I feel like the tone changes, it depends on what the situation is. For every chapter, he is feeling something different, or he is telling us a different story. An example of this is, when he was telling us about his first hear break, off the bat you know he was upset. When he said, “I loved someone, and I wanted that person to love me.” You could tell that he sounds upset, betrayed by the person that he was in love with. As I said, the story is all over the place; as he is growing up it’s changing but one atmosphere that made me think I was there, is when he was describing his returns to Holguin. He said so many details, that if you close your eyes; you are able to picture it. An example “I had to walk to. Main road, then hitchhike my way to Bayamo in any kind of vehicle I could get it.” He also explained his boat ride and how dark it was. I’m actually enjoying this book, he is saying everything that he went through, he is able to express himself in his book which makes it good.
2. What is the point of the story? What’s it making you think about? What themes or issues are brought up? What’s at stake? Why do you think it was written?
- I feel like, the point of the story and the theme are both the same in my option. I feel like he wrote to this story to show the world who he really is. The theme of the story would be, be yourself no matter what it is, live life and just be happy. When he said, “if you cannot live the way you want, there is no point in living.” Which I totally agree too because this is your life, make it the best because when it’s time for you to go; you are going to regret it. The stake from this story, would have to be that he is being real, and he is telling everything how it is. I totally believe that this book was written because he wanted to share his story and he wanted others to know what it is that he went through.
3. Think about the way the story unfolds, the choices made with regard to tense, point of view, chronology. Maybe make a diagram or a drawing.
- The way that the story unfolded from the start was that the mom became a single mother. She waited a long time for her husband to come but it got to the point where she knew he wasn’t going. His relationship with his mom was always weird, he always had a weird relationship with his family. He felt as if he didn’t belong there or if he was unwanted. By the time that he was sick, his mom went to visit him, and he said, “my mother did not notice that I was dying, and I accompanied her while she did all of her shopping.” If you notice throughout the whole story, he was always with his mom, but they never spoke about anything. He when he got older, they had no idea what was going on with his life. All this relates to how the character would act and why he would act like that. He had his family but at the same time he didn’t. He did anything that made him feel good.

- https://www.tampabay.com/opinion/2019/12/02/cubas-treatment-of-gay-people-is-nothing-to-celebrate/
2. How do the experience of DISSIDENCE, HOMOSEXUALITY and LITERATURE interrelate and why?
- As we all know, Cuba is a one state- one party. This is something that has not changed for a while and it’s still a thing. You have to do whatever you are told, even if you don’t like it, you don’t have a choice but to follow orders. People were not able to express their feelings, or if you were gay/lesbian that was a big issue. Another thing that I’ve learned throughout the book was that, if you had a lot of money, it would suck because they would take your money and you would only get a portion back from it. Now, something that I didn’t know was that if you left the country, you were not able to come back. Can you imagine how these people left? This is like living in jail, no freedom, no rights, nothing whatsoever. If Raul Castro found out that you were gay, he would send you to the Military Units to Aid Production.

Sunset Park; Where I Grew Up
I am from Brooklyn, Sunset Park. I’ve lived here my entire life; I’ve never moved from this area. My mom lasted 22 years living in the same place and building. Until last year 2020, she decided it was time for a chance and moved, but it wasn’t something far; she moved 5 avenues down from where we lived. It’s the same area; just a different location. Sunset park has changed so much throughout the years; it has gotten new buildings, new business; it’s growing as a place, it’s becoming more and more popular. Back in the days, you would only see Hispanic in this area, but as the years went by you started seeing different people. You were able to see Asian people, black people, white people, Jewish etc. it started to become a place where everyone wanted to be. You can see everyone’s culture in Sunset Park.
Sunset park is known for a lot of things but one of the main things is their Mexican restaurants. If you are in the mood for some good Mexican food, you know where you must go. In every corner, you’ll be able to find a Mexican restaurant. BUT there is one spot that it’s a taco truck: which it’s El Bronco Truck. They are located on 39th street and 5thavenue. No matter what time you go, there’s always people. People even come from far away for their tacos because they are amazing. But it’s not only about the Mexican food, but you are also able to find any kind of food you want. If you are in the mood for Chinese food, you don’t have to worry about that, if you want Dominican food, you’ll find it and even Central American food. Sunset Park is all about the cultural, you’ll be able to find whatever it is that you want. Which it’s a good thing because you move around the area, you won’t have to worry about food.
There is a big park, that is called Sunset Park, just like the neighborhood. This park is known for their stunning views of the skyline of Manhattan. In the summertime, you can go to their pool. This is an open park for anyone who wants to go. This is where I spent all my childhood years with my friends when I was little. Every time for 9/11 the park as this little event where a lot of people because we can see the lights from there, everyone comes together, we enjoy the view and the food too because there are people selling corn, chips, fruits and so much more.
There is a special event that always happens in Sunset Park, this happens once a year and it’s a big festival. This event started in 1999 and from there on, it’s always been a big thing. This usually happens around September before the summer is over. This starts from 44th street and it ends at 59th street. Every business can be outside selling their products, food, toys, there is everything that you could think off. You can enjoy the weather, cool drinks, and have a great time with your family and friends. I remember when I was little, I would never miss this event, it was something so big that everyone from the block would meet there with their family. As a kid, I remember having so much fun because I was able to do so much stuff. I was able to enjoy the food, since it was outside you were able to see them cook in front of you. Also, there was a lot of kid’s actives outside and as a kid, who wouldn’t love that? It was the best time for me.
I feel like Sunset Park has a very home feeling because of everything that there is. It’s a very Latin place. No matter where you are from, you’ll feel welcomed because of how they treat you and because of how things are. You can try new things and to also learn how their culture. Of course, over the time, everything has changed but to better and bigger things. This is a good area for Latino’s family, well the ones that want their children to learn about their culture or if they don’t want them to forget it. I feel like living in Sunset Park, I would not let you forget about back home. Even if it’s different cultures from different countries, you are still reminded everyday about it.
I had a conversation with my mom because I know for a fact that she would have great information since she’s been here for over than 23 years. She has been here her whole life; this was the first place she came too when she came from Honduras. This is pretty much like her home because of how used to it she is and how welcoming people are, everyone knows her and my dad due to them being here for so long. My mom has been able to notice all the changes that had happened since she came, the raise of rent and how new people from everywhere are starting to come here.

DREAMERS; DACA
Chapter 2: DREAMERS (DACA)
What is DACA That’s a good question, there is a lot of people that don’t understand or know what DACA is or what the is the purpose of this. DACA stands for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. This is a program for children that come to this country at a young age with their parents, they are raised here, they know how to speak English, but the only problem is that they are immigrants. Most of time, these children have no connection to their home country because they have spent their whole childhood in America. Sometimes parents don’t tell their children that they are immigrants until they are older. They have no idea that they don’t have a social security number, they are not able to work in certain place and the worse one is that they can’t continue their education.
DACA started 2012, when President Obama was in the office. He was the one that started all this for children that had dreams and goals in their life. The young people that are impacted by DACA and the DREAM Act as considered as “Dreamers.” Now, the DREAM act is a pathway for the U.S citizenship to the young children that went to college and kept their record clean, meaning no type of problem or anything. But this became an issue, once Trump was in the office. He made an order that he wanted this stop. He was not for it because he didn’t think that it was right. But on December 8th, 2020 a New York judge ordered the federal government to restore DACA. This was a big released for so many people that were fighting for this, they felt like there was hope in them and in what they were doing.
“Thousands March Brooklyn Bridge in New York to Protect DACA Announcement”
This protect happened in 2017, thousands of people were crossing the Brooklyn Bridge when Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that the Trump administration wanted to end DACA program. This protect became so big that 13 people were arrested and 34 more but they were arrested in front of Trump building. Some people decided to go to his building with signs that said, “undocumented unafraid.” This day so people protected because they wanted to fight for something that they believed in and for others. One person tweeted “Just been arrested fighting for our undocumented brothers and sisters near Foley Sq.” Another tweet was “We stand united behind them and their quest for justice.” This just shows that people didn’t have to be there, but they wanted to support the ones that needed the support, which it shows a lot. It shows that there is people that believe in DACA, they believe that every person should have the right to study without a problem. This was a very frightening situation for the dreamers, the onlt thing that they wanted was to study and have a chance like everyone else in this world. They weren’t asking for more or for something that couldn’t be done. DACA wasn’t hurting anyone in this world, it was helping people.
This has affected so many young people, for years they were stressed and worried about not being able to study and to become someone big in this world. All these dreamers, they have dreams, they want to help their families, they want to grow as a person and for someone to tell them that they might not have the chance? It’s very upsetting. No child has to be worried about this; we should all have the rights to go to school without a problem. Imagine how these children feel, this is the only country that they know because this is where they grew up. They have no idea what their home country looks like, they don’t know no one out there. the reason they are here is because their parents wanted a better life for them, also they were running away from danger in their country.
Immigration is big topic, especially now a days we hear it everywhere we go. I have always believed that people that cross the border, they are coming with a big cause. They want to do better and make sure their family is safe; but little do they know that they are coming to a country where they might be a target because of their status. My parents are immigrants, my dad came here at a young age and he was the one that got my mom to come here too. He wanted a better life for him and my mom. He wanted to start his family in this country because he knew that if started a family in Honduras, it was not going to work out for him. For. Few years they both were undocumented because in order to get your green card; it takes a while. But luckily, they both got it on time and here they are now. Even if they got their green cards, they always say that they are proud to be immigrants because in reality they know that this is not their country, this is not where they were born at, but they got the chance to be here and help out their families. I have family members that are undocumented, and they scared for themselves and their children. They leave the house, but they don’t know if they are coming back home.
