Journal Prompt 3
Mommy made me put on so many clothes just so I could play in the snow.
“Mommy, I’m hot! I can’t play in all these!”
“Well, you have to sweetie. I don’t want you to get cold out there.” Then I see my big sister coming downstairs not wearing as much as me!
“Why does Ashy not have to wear all this too?”
“She has on just as many clothes, you’re just more bundled up because you’re smaller.” my mommy told me. Mommy started arguing with my brother about putting on a hat and gloves when Daddy came inside!
“Daddy!!!” I ran to him.
“Guess what, I have a surprise for you guys.” he told us as he showed us these big circles. They look like plates.
“Sleds!” he exclaimed. I ran outside with him and looked at all the pretty snow. I never saw snow before in real life, so it was so cool! But also cold! Daddy helps me make a snowman while Ashley and our brother have a snowball fight. Mommy is taking a lot of pictures on her phone.
I hear our brother laughing and look at my sister Ashley and see her face is red. I laugh too, because she looked silly. She told me her face was red because our brother hit her in the face with a snowball. Something hit my back, and Ashley is smiling at me. She hit me with a snowball!
“Ashy!! I’m trying to build a snowman!” I yell at her.
Our brother wants to try out the sleds. He goes first, and slides down the hill very fast! He said it was fun, but it looks really scary. Ashley goes next, and she went even faster then him. I was too scared to do it. Daddy told me to ride it with Ashley so that I wouldn’t be scared.
“Trust me. It will be fun!” she told me. We get on the sled, and Ashley holds me as we go down. I giggle once we reach the bottom. Our brother and Ashley sled down a few more times before I decide to do it again, by myself this time!
“Are you sure it’s okay for her to go down by herself? She’s only 4, and she’s really little.” I hear Mommy say to Daddy.
“Of course! It’s not like this is a super steep hill.” Daddy says. Ashley is still at the bottom, swishing snow off of her pants when Daddy pushes me. I hear Mommy and Daddy yelling, and I get closer and closer to Ashley. Is she going to catch me?
“Ashy!!!” I yell. Ashley did not move, and my sled runs into her. Ashley goes flying in the air over me as I slide by. She falls on the ground and starts laughing.
“Woah Ashy! I didn’t know you could fly!” I screamed. She gave me a funny look. Ashley helps me get up the hill, and I ask her if we can do it again. I liked making Ashley fly! It was funny!
“No, we definitely aren’t doing that again.” she laughed. I was sad for a minute, but then I was happy again as I sled down our hill again. Playing in the snow is so much fun!

Week 7 Post
Part One:
Terrance Hayes’ “The Same City” utilizes all three aspects of scene, exposition, and reflection greatly in order to tell his story. One part, in particular, is written in the form of an exposition, “In 1974, this man met my mother for the first time as I cried or slept in the same city that holds us tonight.” (Write Moves, p. 282). In this part of the piece, the speaker is explaining how his father came into his life. The speaker then follows up with a reflection, noting “If you ever tell my story, say that’s the year I was born.” (p.282). The author could have chosen to use the exposition mode compared to the others for this point to accurately explain what happened in his past, while it still feeling connected to his present story. Using this mode was effective, especially when it was followed up with the reflection, as it expresses the full effect of how his father’s actions have impacted how the speaker is in his present day.
Part Two:
My fingers move in such a speed I have never witnessed as I type away at my essay. Each click of a key brings me satisfaction as I am one word closer to my goal. The words quickly flood the page as my eyes scan back and forth on the screen. Procrastination is no joke, as I came to the conclusion earlier today. Three papers in one week, and I had somehow managed to save the largest, most difficult one for last, with only hours to complete it. I began to get carried away and was unaware of the fact I had surpassed my word count, only realizing that I still had a conclusion to write. I hear a knock at my door, and it slowly creaks open to reveal my mother with a worrisome expression. “Are you nearly done? You’ve been working for hours. Do you even realize what time it is?” My eyes dart to the small clock in the bottom corner of my computer screen, where it read 11:37 PM. I’ve been working since 10 AM, with no breaks. I had 22 minutes to finish and click submit. “Yeah mom. I-I’m almost done.” I reply. “Good, because I know you have got to be exhausted. This is why you can’t wait until the last minute to do your work.” she huffed as she slowly closed my door behind her. My eyes avert back to the screen, where I furiously type. Never again, I think. Never again will I let anything distract me from my work to such an extent, as I hit submit at 11:57, knowing full well a new round of assignments will begin at the start of the week.

Prompt 1
Song: Wordless (Frejoh)
She returns home from school, many thoughts and worries race her mind. Knowing full well she has work to do, she puts all her plans and worries aside and goes outside for her bike. Her one moment to be alone, not have a care in the world, and take in her surroundings. As she pedals off, she begins to feel the wind on her face, moving her hair, giving her breath. She rides down the hill of her street, not needing to pedal at that exact moment. She feels free, hopeful she can complete her ever-growing to-do list. Her concerns of what assignment to do next, what is due tomorrow, fades away as she sets her focus on the sky. As the sun starts to set, she is welcomed to a colorful sunset, giving her peace. This was the reassurance she needed to return home and start her studies, without stress of what would come tomorrow, because she knew it would be okay.
Song: To Me You Are (Nick Box)
Excitement filled the child as the drive continued on. Despite the rain pouring down, his hopes remained high of the trip his family was going on. He thought about about all the possible activities they would do, and smiled to himself as he continued to gaze out the window. He watched as two raindrops on the car window rolled down, and secretly rooted for one to win the imaginary race. The rain made him think of the ocean, and he became elated. He thought of the wildlife he hoped to see; fish, crabs, dolphins, maybe even a shark. He imagined swimming out deep with his dad and older sister, goggles at the ready to take a peek under the water. He thought of the sandcastles he would make, the feel of the sand, and the brightness of the sun. The child began paying attention to his surroundings once again. The rain has stopped, the sun began to shine, drying up the water, and he noticed happy families walking and spending time together. He was finally there.
