Introducing ‘Vulnerable’
‘Vulnerable’ is a hyper-realstic skin cast.
materials: Chain, Latex, fluid paints, eye hooks.
This artwork is being pulled down by the weight of the blood inside, with the skin holding the body together. In comparison to my last sculpture which was a full physical body I have deconstructed the body into two simple forms, the skin and blood as a representation of bodily substances. The conditions of the skins space are that it is confined to being hang by chains that have pierced through its skin. This has caused the skin to bruise, tear, stretch and suffer injuries caused from the unbearable pain it is undergoing. However, it holds on and protects the body. Our bodies are constantly vulnerable to injuries and illnesses whether that is physical or emotional. There is a certain balance between the chain, blood and skin as without each other to rely on for support, it would not be possible for them to not fall apart. I have pushed the physical boundaries of just how far the human body can be pushed but still remain to fight back to its best abilities.

When adding the blood I found that it pulled and stretched the skin downwards which really helped with the idea of the skin fighting to hold onto the bodily substance.

Skin has been hang by chains with carabiners linking chain to skin with it pierced through. I have used eye hooks in the roof and held them in place with wall anchors as there was no beams in this area of the roof. I also hang it around the lighting so it would potentially shine inside the sack of skin.

Here I have included a video of the removal of the latex peeling off the board and then began to play with my skin to get and idea of it hanging and it’s flexibility.

Here I began the process of adding the latex to a 120 x120x4.75 mdf board. This took multiple layers where I spread out the latex thin to build up the depth. I wanted to leave the skin thin enough so it would have a transparency/ see through look while still have the strength to hold itself up with chains. However I found this material to be extremely strong and stretchy regardless.
It took approximately 3 hours between each layer for the latex to set fully.

Checking out space to plan out my sculpture display where I will place it and how to make the hang possible. I also drew on the space image to visualise placement and look.

During this lesson we used an app called Trnio 3D Scanner to take a 3D image of real objects which we displayed and simply digitalised them. After having a few attempts through scanning I just couldn’t quite get the app to work for me. I also tried adding the images to the app but they didn’t process. Surely if I spent some more time figuring it out, it could be a really useful tool for photographing my sculptures from all angles.
We then gained access to computers and had a quick lesson on zbrush, having a go at it ourselves and seeing what we could come up with and create. I have previously used this software in a design elective I took at Massey so had some knowledge of how it works which helped with the basics like tools and what they did to create my form.

I began with a sphere shape and built on and took away areas from it. I was going for a sort of monster idea that quickly turned pretty creepy. I added large horns which rise above its head and a bone like look down the middle top of head. I also tried to create a socket of the eye with eyebrow forms surrounding it and added in the eyeball inside separately for a more realistic look. Towards the end I began attempting to add spiky teeth sticking out the mouth with two fang like ones at the top. Overall I felt this class was a good refresher for me which could be a useful tool for me in the future.

In class, we worked together in pairs combining our brought materials that could be destroyed to build a sculpture.

Together we managed to create a styrofoam bear which seemed to have suffered severely physically, but also has a mental effect aswell that it had fell victim too. There’s are shards of blue glass as well as a smashed pot plant that was inserted inside the head area. An Manikin leg protruded outwards as a replacement towards the cut off one and the arm was made with the manikins head resembling a broken arm with the spring. There was a childlike manner to this piece as a child’s toy in which they attempted to fix after long time use and piece together themselves. Needles and string were placed in the hand and leg to further execute the pain the teddy was going through that it’s audience could also feel a little bit through the sharp objects chosen.
