I wanted to take the time to advise some books on the Medical Imaging subject, since I am working with them a lot myself. I personally think that a few decent books are extremely important to start with Medical Imaging. You have to understand the normal anatomy, but you also have to know normal (and therefore unimportant) radiographic signs. But even before all that, you have to know how to position your patient. A lot of the students I have to help don’t think this is that important, but honestly, everything starts with positioning!! If you don’t how to put your elbow for the best radiographs, or which lateral view of the thorax is best for interpreting heart disease, than you just might miss important pathologies… All the books that I have mentioned here are brilliant and I hope that you enjoy them as much as I do if you decide to buy them!
The books I have on Medical Imaging are the ones you see above.
The Thrall Textbook of Veterinary Diagnostic Radiology is kind of the “bible” of medical imaging. Everything is in there, it is extremely complete, so if you need a book that contains everything about medical imaging this is a very good book for you. It contains information about the animals that need radiographs the most, so you can find cats and dogs, but also horses in it. One disadvantage is that it is not very usable in practive because it is a very big book and it contains so much information that sometimes it is difficult to quicky find something it. Another disadvantage is that there is no ultrasound information in it, so if you want that, you will have to buy another book!
The Handbook of Small Animal Radiology and Ultrasound is much more easier to use in practice. It is a small, yet very complete manual. You can find differential diagnosis in it about almost every radiographic and echographic sign. So this book is combining radiography and ultrasound, which is even more usable in practice! The only disadvantage that this book has is that it only contains drawings and not real radiographs. On one side, that is easy to understand the diseases and the views, but on the other side it will (of course) still look a little bit different on the real radiographs and echo-images.
The Practical Diagnostic Imaging for the Veterinary Technician is a very practice-guided book and very usable in practice. It doesn’t say a lot about diseases and differential diagnosis, but it is very useful for positioning and for the techniques of ultrasound. I would not buy it if you want a complete theoretical guide on medical imaging, but it is a very nice book to read when you want to learn more about practicing radiography and ultrasound.
An atlas of Interpretative Radiographic Anatomy of the Dog and Cat is one of my personal favorites. It contains so much radiographs and really explains every little bit about the radiographs. It contains real radiographs, schematic drawings, positioning drawings, … It has the normal images, but also the pathologic ones. There are real radiographs of the pathologies, but also easy drawings to make it easier to understand everything. I personally really love this book!
