Nine Interior Design Tricks With big Impact
You don't have to remodel or renovate to completely transform a space. Here, Nancy Mikulich, ASID, principal designer and owner of Oasis Home by NLM Design Interiors, offers nine interior design tricks with big impact on any room. 1. Curtains higher than windows make ceilings look higher. If your ceilings are a little low, try replacing your standard curtains with curtains that extend above the top sill of your windows. 84- or 96-inch curtains are the longest standard sizes; longer ones will most likely need to be custom ordered. 2. Low furniture adds height as well. Filling a space with low furniture adds space between the tops of pieces and the ceiling, creating a greater perception of depth. Opt for chairs with low arms, ottomans, stools and low sideboards. 3. Mirrors reflect light and make spaces feel brighter. A large decorative mirror looks great as the focal point of a room and also serves to brighten the space by reflecting light from your windows. Make sure to place your mirror perpendicular to the window and not opposite it lest the light bounce right back out. 4. A glass shower makes a small bathroom feel bigger. If you have a bathroom with limited square footage, replace the curtain or frosted pane with clear glass. What you give up in privacy is made for in added depth, especially if your flooring continues right into the shower. 5. Paint in unexpected places turns ordinary items into focal points. Make an ordinary bookcase a room's main attraction with a bright coat of paint covering the back. This trick works with mantels and even the insides of closets as well. 6. Stacked books show variety. Instead of lining up all your books in a row like a library, stack some on their sides three or four high. If you have cube-shaped shelves, alternate horizontal and vertical books. 7. No one ever complained about having too many pillows. You can easily fit five pillows on a couch-two throw pillows on either end and a long, supportive pillow in the middle. Mix patterns and solids, large and small prints, florals and geometrics for some variety. 8. Texture add personality to neutrals. Neutral colors are popular because they boost resale value more than bold colors, but they don't show much character. The solution? Texture! It adds a level of comfort to a room while maintaining that timeless appeal. 9. Negative space makes a space look balanced and uncluttered. Avoid a cluttered appearance by embracing negative space between design elements. Take an honest look at everything in your room and decide whether it adds anything to the overall design or function of the room. If not, you're better off without it.
