“Dear diary, today I learned something about myself…” Nora mumbled to herself.
Nora HATED the daily writing assignments. It was the worst part of school. If you could call the one tiny room she and 7 other girls were shoved into a school. Nora was 16 and lived in a group home. Her parents were addicts who were never in her life longer than a month or so at a time. Nora had been in foster care as a small child, but she became more and more rebellious as the years passed, and the state deemed her “unfit for society”.
It’s not that Nora was a “bad kid” she was just misunderstood. The years of being bounced from home to home, new moms, new dads, handsy “big brothers”... anyone would crack under the situations she had been forced into as a child. Nightmares were her safe place, for reality was always way worse than her wildest dreams.
“Today, I learned that yet again... no one gives a fuxk about me.” Her mother had missed another visit- no big surprise there. Her mother had missed all but one visit in the last three years. What was really bothering her, was the note she had received at lunch a bit ago. Ivy was the “popular girl”, which wasn’t much of a title in a home of only 8 girls with no contact with other teens.
The note was from Ivy. Ivy was 17 and was considered the “popular girl”. Not that the title carries much weight in a place you only see 7 other teens and have no access to internet. Jade had dark brown hair, almost black. She had managed to obtain hair dye, which was a HUGE Nono in the group home and had a streak of teal on her hair. Her grey eyes always looked like they held a secret of yours.
Nora shied in comparison. Mousy brown hair, shit brown eyes, and glasses. She knew she was nothing special. But for some stupid reason she had jotted a note in Ivys journal asking her to meet behind the large tree at lunch. Her hands had shaken as she took the note from Ivy. She excused her self to the bathroom to read it as notes were forbidden.
The words she read burned in her head- Behind the large tree? Why so you can try and kiss me or something you dyke!
The accusation of being a dyke wasn’t what bothered Nora, she had been called that on and off for several years... since the first time she kissed a girl at 12. Was she a dyke? She wasn’t sure what or who she was. But she was upset that ivy wouldn’t even consider meeting her.
Why had she thought it was a good idea... furiously she kept scribbling in her journal as her internal monologue was beating her up inside.
“Not only does no one give a fuck about me, not my parents, not my teacher (sorry miss adams), not the other girls, but I don’t give a fuck about me. I’m not even me! I’m not Nora. I feel so wrong in this body. It doesn’t make sense. I don’t feel like me. I look in the mirror and see a stranger, I’m more than my shell. I’m more than my record, I’m more than my behavior. But does any one see the real me? No! They just see this spoiled girl, who doesn’t listen and is a burden. Fuck that. I’m tired of being everyone’s burden. I’m tired of being alive. I wish I were dead”
Chest heaving she stared at her own words that she wasn’t aware were inside her. She knew she meant them, but she wasn’t aware how deep her self hatred had run. She wasn’t aware she had been at her wits end for so long. She started to panic. Miss adams could NOT read this. They would send her away. But ripped out pages were grounds for punishment.
She looked around for something, ANYTHING she could spill on her paper. As she stood up to refill her water bottle hoping she could tip it over on her journal, Ivy snatched her journal.
“Miss Adams! Look at this! Nora is unsafe!”
Miss Adams was always two steps ahead of everyone. She grabbed the journal and begin to read the entry from the day. “Nora, will you please head to Miss Avarados office now please? Tracy, you will go with her till she is inside.”
Noras shoulders slumped, she knew that this would mean at BEST a week or two of restriction. And at worst... the trash bags of her belongings would move homes yet again...
The door opened with a creak as Nora stared at her torn off brand chucks. Miss Alvarado was in the doorway looking as foreboding as ever. With her voice that seemed to vibrate off walls she stared at Nora,”thank you Tracy, you may go”
Inside the office was only furnished by the therapists desk, and two chairs. One for the overbearing councilor, and one for which ever girls turn it was to be miserable for an hour 2x a week.
“Nora, you are normally one of the ones I don’t worry about which is surprising considering your... track record... why did I receive a call from miss Adams to check my inbox for your journal entry? Are you really that unhappy you want to take your life?”
Nora continued staring at her shoes, maybe if she pretended this wasn’t happening, she could will it into reality. THWACK. Miss Alvarado had smacked the desk with a file. Not just any file, but Noras file. “Nora, I think the best course of action would be to send you to St. Peter’s for a few days for your own safety. You may return once your bout in St. Peters is over “
Nora stayed stone silent for a few moments. Tears welling in her eyes that she would never release, she steadied her voice,” I understand miss Alvarado. I’ll pack my things”
“Nora this is a temporary stay, that won’t be necessary. Bobby will pull up the van and transport you from the office.”
The car ride seemed to go on forever. As the evening drifted into darkness, Nora realized it was much too long of a drive. They should have been there ages ago. City turned to country roads and green hills. She had never been this far from the city. In the distance she saw a small orange glow. She had ridden with Bobby in complete silence besides the flick of his bic as he light up a menthol cool. She decided it was time to finally break the silence.
“Bobby... I’m thirsty... are we almost there?”
Bobby barely acknowledged her besides a small grunt. The orange glow grew larger and she realized it was a small building. She hoped this meant she could at least empty her bladder. It definitely was not St. Peter’s, but at this point she didn’t care where they were as long as they stopped. They pulled into a gravel drive and Bobby parked the car. He got out and lit up yet another menthol.
Nora tried to open her door only to discover it was child locked. The house van never had child lock on it. She began to pound upon the window begging Bobby to let her out. He turned from her and leaned against the drivers side door, staring out into the darkness. The door of the building slowly opened with a blinding light. A figure walked out of the front briefly blocking the light. As the person walked closer Bobby stood up and shifted his gait nervously.
“This her?” The new comer asked gruffly.
“Hey Chase, yeah. She’s ready for transport.”
Transport? What did he mean transport? Wasn’t he supposed to take her to St. Peter’s? Who was this new guy. Why were they discussing her like she was an animal?
The door opened and she was pulled to her feet roughly. She began to fight to try and get away. Chase tackled her to the ground. There were suddenly 3 sets of hands pinning her to the dirt. Before she knew it she was hog tied behind her back. Sobbing and tasting blood she started to black out as she was lifted into the back of a small sedan. She woke up what must have been a few hours later. It was still pitch black and there were two people up front driving.
Chase was behind the wheel, and talking to a woman in the passengers seat. The lady noticed Nora had woken up and nudged him. Instantly the silence was deafening. Chase turned around and swore under his breath.
“Hey Emily, we’re almost to the pit stop. About another hour.”
Nora tried to speak but her mouth was so dry she could barely speak.
“Uh... Chase... I really need to use the bathroom, and could use some water.”
“You can wait.”
“Babe... the girl needs the bathroom. Come on we can grab a drink when we stop.”
Thank god for Emily. The car stopped and she cut off the zip ties on Nora that had been holding her wrists and sat her up. They had apparently stopped at a seedy bar... she couldn’t go inside, she wasn’t even 18 yet, how did these two genius’s think they were going to get her in?
Maybe she could make a run for it once she got inside? CLICK. The sound was a cold metal handcuff being slapped on her wrist. The other cuff was clapped on Emily’s wrist.
“Just incase you got any bright ideas kid.”
Do you know how awkward it is to pee handcuffed to someone else? And of course the cuff was on her dominant wrist so it was harder to wipe in a tiny ass stall. Coming out of the ladies room Chase handed Emily a beer. Nora started to ask for water but they rushed out the door with a nod and “Thanks Tim” to the bartender.
Back at the car they started arguing about if she needed to be hogtied again. Emily seemed to be more lenient. And seemed to get her way. The car ride was strange... her caretakers seemed to be messing with her head. They’d go from silent abs ignoring her to telling her that they were getting married, to telling her they were sister and brother. No matter what the situation was she didn’t care she just wanted the ride to stop.
The sun began to rise as she started drifting off to sleep. Next thing she knew the door was being opened yet again. They were in front of a HUGE old building in the middle of nowhere. The building read “Mercury Ridge”. She had no clue where in the hell they had taken her. The building gave off a energy tht made her stomach turn.
They walked up to the building in unison. A guard took down their information and ushered Nora inside. She turned around to ask Emily a question, and both her and Chase had already left. The door shut behind her with a loud SLAM. The room inside held a few old chairs that looked like they were from the 80’s. You know the old fabric ones with that awful wood arms? Yeah.. those.
There was a huge reception desk and a sign that said “ authorized people only behind this point.” The man behind the counter looked like he couldn’t be bothered to even look up. He was balding and had sunglasses on indoors as if the lights over head were assaulting his senses. The guard walked her a thick metal door. There were no handles on the door. With a swift beep from inside the door swung open.
A tall broad man with thick curly hair and a darker complexion walked through, he grabbed her by the wrist and disappeared behind the doors. Inside it smelt of sweat and urine. A faint hint of bleach wafted to her nostrils. The man introduced himself as Anjelo. But it was more formality, not for conversation.
They went down a maze of hallways and doors. Every door they encountered was locked and Anjelo opened them with a badge. He finally said, “Here we are. Your new home. Girls Unit A.” Then promptly left leaving her standing there not sure what to do. A tall redhead walked up, and finally someone seemed to be able to see her.
“Hey, I’m Tasha. This is Girls A. Welcome. First we have to take you to your room and get you changed. Follow me kid.”
As she followed, faces peered out of doorways at her. None of the bedroom doorways seemed to have doors. Abs she passed a room the size of a tiny closet with the walls and floors all carpeted. There was a door on it, with a TINY window. At the end of a hallway before another set of locking doors, Tasha stopped and motioned into a doorway.
Inside were two wooden beds with matching dressers. One bed was made perfectly, the other had a set of sheets folded on it. Nora was instructed to strip, and a full body search which included a cavity search followed. She changed into scrubs the color of milky oatmeal. She want even allowed her own underwear.
“After you make your bed just hang out till we call you for group. Oh, by the way... your roommate should be back from lunch shortly. Her names Melinda.”
Holding back tears after being violated in such a manner under the guise of a search, Nora stumbled to her bed and began to make it. Her mattress ( it was less of a mattress and more of a yoga mat) smelt of bad body odor, and cheese. Laying down she began to sob. The tears stung her cheeks and she wiped them away with the backs of her hands. She inhaled deeply as the tears touched the wounds on her wrists where she had been restrained during her journey.
No! She would not let them see her break. She would get her self together and figure out where and what the fuck she was doing there.

Unbinding Spell (Knot-Magic)
Take a length of twine and make small simple knots around nine fingers, I avoided the ring finger because in my case it’s already bound. Alternatively for more oomph you could knot around each of your ankles, then your wrists, your big toes, your thumbs, and your head. Each time slip the knot off before tightening it completely around “nothing”. In the end you should have a length of twine with nine knots. (Do not lose this twine, it is a magical representation of you until you finish the spell and give it it’s purpose.) Take the twine with nine knots and recite this while one by one untying the knots: You have had me bound, Knotted up, but no longer Your fetters I have found My will has grown stronger I undo by nine, and bind your spell to this twine I unfasten by eight, I turn back your hate I unwind by seven, this weight gone my spirits leaven I untwist by six, I am on to your tricks I unbind by five, your magic shall not thrive I unmake by four, your craft harms me no more I unravel by three, your curse turned back to thee I unknot by two, your spell is through I untie by one, your work is undone - Take the unknotted twine and burn it.

One late night turned into another for the studious pupil. But that was expected. Magic study doesn’t come easy, and it always comes with a price.
The moon started to fade as Moira finally put her books up. Exhausted she flopped on her couch, drained of energy. She had not yet learned how to properly ground herself. Hopefully soon she could protect her own energy within. Moira didn’t mind though. She felt what she was doing was far greater than worrying about her self.
Staves, her familiar hopped up beside her. With a small chirp, he began to knead her thigh begging for attention. Moira absentmindedly began to pet him under his chin. Her tawny feline companion happily purred away. Her thoughts began to go over the nights events. Maybe she could make a difference. Maybe she already had. Maybe, just maybe her studies were not all in vain.
Her coffee beside her was cold from sitting the last few hours. She dragged herself off of the couch to freshen it, much to the irritation of Staves. An unsettling feeling washed over her. As she passed her kitchen window, something told her to look. In the early morning light it was hard to tell, but she thought she saw something rushing past.
She blinked and shook her head, her crimson locks falling from her messy bun. There was no way. She lived too close to the woods for something that large to have found her. She told herself she was just tired and being silly. She hummed to herself out of habit and reheated her coffee. She never could finish a cup before it went cold. If only she liked cold coffee she would be set.
There it was again, that feeling of dread. This time it hit so deep she had to brace herself so she didn’t stumble. The hairs on the back of her neck began to rise. There had to be something, someone outside. She composed herself and took a deep breath. Slowly, she turned around to face the window.
There was a brief second where she made eye contact with... Him? Her? It? She wasn’t sure. But those eyes. Giant glowing eyes that were a shade of blue that didn’t seem natural. And just like that, what ever, or who ever it was vanished. All thoughts of coffee were lost as Moira raced out her kitchen door into the crisp morning air.
The air hit like ice in her lungs. It was mid June... it should have been warm and humid. Yet she could see the crystals forming in the air as she caught her breath. What the fuck was happening? She took in the area surrounding her. Slowly, her eyes adjusted to the harsh light from the rising sun. Shielding her eyes she scanned the yard.
What was she doing? Think! She told herself. She closed her eyes and tried to focus. It’s not like she hadn’t been practicing similar situations for months now. She lifted her palms skyward and visualized the yard around her. Behind her the kitchen door, weathered, paint peeling, the old white coat flaking off in places. She really should get around to paint- No! Focus.
The little garden of herbs by her window. The stone path leading to the edge of the side yard. The rosemary by the gates entry. The old trees that backed the property. THERE! By the old trees. In her minds eye she could see those icy blue eyes as they peeked from the shadows of the trees. She zeroed in on the tree line.
Focus Moira, she pleaded with herself. Don’t fuck it up this time. It was like she was shooting through the gap between her and the poplar trees in her minds eye. Her consciousness searching every inch, leaving no area untouched. As her mind neared the tree line, the movement began again. The blackest shadow she had ever seen emerged. It must have been eight, nine feet tall. The shadow seemed to ripple, like a pond struck with a pebble. And just as it opened those unforgettable eyes, Moira collapsed with a shout.
Moira began to stir. Staves was sitting on her hip. She lay sprawled on her side in the dirt. He lovingly bit her on the wrist before hopping down and scampering towards the garden to hunt mice. Rubbing her tender muscles she slowly stood. The sun was now high, it had to be at least ten in the morning. That means she lost a decent amount of time because of the shadow creature.
The shadow creature! In her groggy state she had almost forgotten. Slamming her eyes shut quickly she scanned her surrounding. Crap. Nothing. It must have gone beyond her reach. Cursing herself for losing the creature, she dusted herself off heading towards the kitchen door.
Just as she reached the threshold, her stomach turned. The contents of the late night coffee emptied on the ground. Looking through her doorway, she could see it looked like her home had been raided. The kitchen table shattered, dishes smashed, the couch cushions thrown to the floor, her books off the shelf, deeper into the house the path of destruction continued.
Moira raced up the stairs to her loft, begging who ever would listen. “please let it be there.” She ripped her giant tapestry from the wall, pleading with the Gods for her most precious items to be untouched. As the thin decorative fabric fell, so did her heart. The little cubby behind the wall hanging was empty. Something had found what it had been looking for.
She reached for the wall to hold as her knees buckled and she slid to the floor. She had failed. She had been tasked with one thing and she couldn’t even do that right. What would Karn say... Surely she would never be trusted with anything again... How could she have been so ill prepared? She had been working so hard. She should have been able to hold her own.
Three strong raps rang out on her front door downstairs. Fuck... she thought... he knows... already... how could he already know? She haphazardly rehung the tapestry in an attempt to hide the void left behind it. She tucked a curl behind her ear, and headed downstairs.
As she rounded the corner to the door, she spotted Karn engrossed in his inspection of the damages. She should have known he would have gotten in before she made it downstairs. To Karn doors meant nothing. He always had his secret ways to get what he wanted.
With the flick of his wrist, Karn righted an upturned recliner and took a seat, all before Moira could even place the couch cushion back in its place. Sitting down, she lowered her head to avoid his gaze. It was fruitless as she could feel his eyes burrowing onto her. She raised her eyes and met with his. His eyes, the color of amber in the sun.
They had a way to make her feel naked and alone. Like he could see every inch of her and she could do nothing about it. Nervously she crossed her legs and covered her chest with her arms trying to avoid his searching stare. To her surprise, his gaze was not angry. It was almost, amused?
Karn sighed and shook his head.
“Moira, I’m not mad at you. Not even I could have fought off a Skadus Deorc of that strength. You couldn’t have known nor been prepared. Now to do something about this wreck you call home.”
Once again he flicked his wrist. Instantly the disheveled contents of her home began to make their way to their rightful places. Staves ran under the couch just narrowly missing being clocked by a picture frame that was returning itself to the wall. Once everything settled, Moira finally spoke.
“Karn, what is a Skadus Deorc? I, I thought I saw a... “ Shaking her head as her voice trailed off she lowered her eyes again, ashamed for not knowing.
“A Skatus Deorc, Deorc for short. Roughly it translates to shadow of darkness or shadow of evil. It’s a creature older than time. Once they were abundant, but through the years they have died out and become rare to encounter. Don’t let that fool you, they’re one of the strongest beings you may ever encounter. Most don’t live to recount their encounters with a Deorc.”
Was that a smirk? Was Karn impressed she had survived her encounter? That was high praise indeed if so. Karn wasn’t the type to show emotions, unless it’s anger. He was typically very stoic. He carried him self in a way you knew he has seen a lot. Goddess forbid he ever let down his guard. No one was in his inner circle. His friend group was not only small, it was nonexistent.
Moira was snapped out of her train of thought as Karn began to chuckle. Now she was really thrown off.
“Moira, you are a gifted witch and seer and you don’t even see it. Ironic isn’t it? Your own self doubt clouds your gifts. Relax. I can be personable when I choose, I just don’t often choose as such”
With a snap of his fingers a warm mug of a pungent liquid appeared in his hands and he took a long calculated sip. He was studying her. Reading her. Digging deep with in her essence. She hated when people read her. Especially when it was Karn.
“Okay, so this scat- scat...”
“Skatus Deorc.”
“Yes, this deorc. What does it want? What does this mean for our work? Karn... it took-...” her voice trailed off in shame as she hung her head.
He set the mug down on the side table and fixed his gaze on her. He Spoke slowly and calculated.
“I know. And while I am... amazed you came through unscathed, I’m highly disappointed that you didn’t protect the scrolls. It was your duty. You were sworn Moira. Those were our most precious weapons in our fight.”
Karn slammed his fist on the table, upturning his mug which shattered into tiny shards. Staves jumped and took off with a hiss. He must have been hiding under the chair Karn was seated. Moira cringed at the sound then dragged her self up to clean the mess. She glanced at the cup as she passed to the kitchen and stopped in her tracks. Doing a double take she checked the leaves and stems... the outline they left behind was shaped like the deorc.
Karn left leaving Moira to sift through her thoughts on her own. Before parting he suggested she salt around the boundary of the house. Moira emptied her wares of all her salt and went to work. Starting at her garden gate, working her way to the tree line. As she worked she mentally went over the days events. Every step she took, every turn, every moment trying to figure out what she could have done better. What spells, chants, energy forces...
Karn said most don’t live to tell the tale. She should be proud. But here she was beating herself up. She always did. Ever since her parents passed away when she was a child... she never felt good enough.

“Maybe we’ll meet again, when we are slightly older and our minds less hectic, and I’ll be right for you and you’ll be right for me. But right now, I am chaos to your thoughts and you are poison to my heart.”

So. Let’s have some real talk.
Depression, anxiety, panic disorder and PTSD. They’re ugly. They’re raw. They’re real. They’re me.
I’ve been through so much in my 32 years. If you knew my full story, you’d be amazed I’m still here. To be fair, no one knows the full story. I don’t ever let anyone in enough to know all the dirty, dusty, broken shards that make me who I am.
Yet through all these events in my life, I keep going. Sure I may break. Sure I may throw a pity party for myself. Sure I may faulter. But at the end of the day, I’m here. I’m me. Unapologetically me. I help. I care. I’m there for anyone and everyone. Friends, neighbors, family, hell even strangers.
Don’t ever underestimate a person who has seen the darkest of dark. I rise from the ashes time and time again. Yes I have a darkness, but let’s be honest... who the hell doesn’t?
