they really popped the fuck off when they put together Edward Teach. they looked at Taika’s big brown doe eyes and said put tattoos on it. now a beard. give him delicious grey streaks of hair. they really built the perfect man and then to top it all off they made him gay. what the fuck

Jenkins immediately wants it known that Christine Wada designed [Blackbeard’s] costume. “The brief was Road Warrior and then a picture of Prince from 1979. And you remember that little half shirt?” As Jenkins talks he stands up and tucks his shirt in, showing off just the littlest bit of his torso. I am delighted, this is so fun and silly. I cannot believe David Jenkins is demonstrating the parts of Blackbeard’s outfit that are most like Prince. “Then, we thought that he should slowly morph into Prince’s colors. He should start all black, and then the purple comes out as he falls in love and embraces falling in love with Stede.” I don’t mention that this will confirm a lot of meta that’s out there, but I think that maybe he knows. |  Our Flag Means Death Showrunner David Jenkins on Fandom and Queer Fantasy

something not talked about nearly enough on here (or anywhere) is that guz khan is the only member of the cast of ofmd to publicly support and stand up for palestine and he is the only one not returning for s2 and stated that he wouldn’t compromise his views or speaking the truth to power for any job or any amount of money

I’ve seen a lot of posts lately about what name Stede uses for Ed – is it Ed, is it Edward, what does it mean that Ed lets Stede call him by name, who else gets to do so – and a lot of people seem to assume that Stede is oblivious to the intimacy of it. And usually it’s always the correct call to assume Stede is oblivious! :D But I think in this case he is aware that he has a special privilege in getting to use “Ed” rather than “Blackbeard”, and is somewhat careful about the distinction. My reasoning? He almost always uses “Blackbeard” when he’s speaking about Ed to someone else.
Evidence:
Episode four, while Stede is dressed in Ed’s clothes, speaking to the crew: “Yes, I am the legendary Blackbeard.”
Episode five, while dictating to Lucius for the journal: “It’s been an extraordinary few days of training with Blackbeard’s crew.”
Episode seven, again speaking to Lucius: “Guys like Blackbeard, they live for adventure.”
Episode eight, during the breakfast between Stede, Ed, and Calico Jack: “Blackbeard and I met on a ship.”*
Also in episode eight, while talking to the crew: “And, on a related note… Blackbeard will no longer be sailing with us.”
(Stede also uses “Blackbeard” repeatedly in episode ten, when he’s telling stories to his kids and to the guys in the pub, but those might not count because in both instances he’s talking to people who plausibly might not know “Ed” is Blackbeard’s name.)
*I think this instance is the most interesting, because it’s in relative privacy – it’s only the three of them in the room – and Stede’s already been introduced to Calico Jack as a close friend of Ed’s. But he still defaults to “Blackbeard” rather than “Ed”! Also, later in the episode (during the scene where Stede and Jack are peeing) is one of the only times I can find where Stede uses “Ed” to talk about Ed to someone else – but he does so only after accidentally calling Jack “Ed”, mistaking them for one another, thus already introducing the more intimate name into the conversation – and Jack immediately calls him on it.
So, yeah, in short I think Stede very much knows that he’s being singled out by getting to use “Ed” or “Edward”, and (unusually for him) is quite mindful about it. And, you know, probably secretly quite pleased. :D

too much “this character did something bad” talking about fictional characters like they’re autonomous entities and not enough “why have the writers made this character do the bad thing and how does it contribute to the overall plot and themes?”
