(Bakemonogatari) Nadeko Snake 001
I've translated the first chapter of Nadeko Snake from Bakemonogatari! If you're reading this on my blog, a more reader-friendly version can be found here. 001
Nadeko Sengoku was my sister's classmate. I have two sisters; she was friends with the younger one. Unlike my terrible circumstances in the present, you can say I was better off in elementary school. I liked playing with everybody, but I didn't like playing with somebody. Although I would play with everyone in my class during break time, there were few times when I would play with them after school. No one liked me. Whether I talk about it or remember it, no one liked me. I don't want to talk about it, nor do I want to remember it. Well, it's not that I've been the way I am since I was little. The thing is, I was just that sort of kid back then. And so, I often would go home right away after school, especially when I had no lessons to do. When I got home, Nadeko Sengoku had come over to play. See, my two sisters are so close that, even now, they would always, always, always, always be by each other's side and it's become so bad that, as a brother, I greatly worry about them, who get along so well. In their elementary years, they were very different: the older sister was solely an outdoors person, while the younger sister was an indoors person. Because of that, the latter would often have friends over to play every other day. Nadeko Sengoku was in no way particularly close to my sister, but she seemed lonely among my sister's many friends, I think. I say, "I think," because to tell you the truth, I don't remember much about her. Despite that, among all the friends my sister brought over, only Nadeko Sengoku still leaves an impression. This is because when my sister has many friends over as I come home after school, (At this time, I shared a room with my sisters. I got my own room when I entered middle school.) they happily play board games when they had enough people, but when my sister plays with Nadeko Sengoku, the times she would call me over were oddly greater. My sister who had many friends (This hasn't changed; my sisters have many things in common, but they are extraordinarily good at getting close to others that, as their brother, I'm extraordinarily envious.) brought her classmates over, and strangely, as a classmate she invited, Nadeko Sengoku was the type of girl who acted on her own accord. You could say the same about any of my sister's friends, but everything about them inevitably escaped me save for that girl's name. But only her name. I don't remember her that well, after all. I'm sorry for using such a vague turn of phrase again, but Nadeko Sengoku was a shy child of few words who often casts her eyes downward—I think. I think so, but, well, I don't know. Those might be the traits of another one of my sister's friends or the traits of one of my friends at the time. Anyway, whenever my sister's friends came over, I would get unusually irritated. My impression of them was not a good one, much less when they would come over whenever they wanted. Now that I think about it, I think my sister's friends are better than their brothers who wouldn't play with me at all. In any case, it was a story from years past, so I want you to understand it from an elementary schoolboy's perspective. Actually, ever since I started attending middle school, the younger of my two sisters would have less and less friends over, and so, she would also call me over to play with her less and less. We had different rooms at this point, but there was another reason aside from this. My sisters transferred to a private middle school, so practically all of the relationships they had accumulated until they graduated elementary school were reset. Nadeko Sengoku was my sister's classmate from their elementary years—nowadays, this isn't so. They are in different schools. No matter how good my opinion of her was two years ago, the last time I saw Nadeko Sengoku was perhaps—six years ago. Six years. Enough time for a person to change. At least, I know I've changed. You can say I had always been this sort of person, but then and now are different. It pains me so greatly that I can't even look at my elementary school yearbook. An elementary schoolboy's perspective is insignificant, but now that I think about it, I just can't see the me now surpassing or winning against the me from back then. Yeah, you could say I'm glorifying my memories, but the one who can't look back at them is not the me from my elementary days. I am looking at them through the me from back then, not the me now. I'm so ashamed of myself that my past self and my current self wouldn't be able to recognize ourselves if we ran into each other on the street. I don't know if that's a bad thing or not. Not being proud of my past self. But that's how it is. Anyone would probably say the same. So when I reunited with Nadeko Sengoku, I didn't know who she was at first; a moment passed before I could remember her. If in that instant, I recognized her a little sooner—the girl entwined in snakes—perhaps this story would not have reached that sort of conclusion. It would not have turned into an emergency. This regret I feel toward that girl or that kaii would not hold any meaning. I have given away this story's ending, but somehow, it appears that Nadeko Sengoku has turned from a friend of my sister whom I vaguely remember to the one girl I can never, ever forget.
