I mean surely we all grew up feeling like there was a wrongness inherently deep inside us that will endure for the rest of our lives

This note, filed away in a scrapbook from a member of the Class of 1878, seems to date from ca. 1874:
“My god, Lucille, your left ankle is showing. Rod.”

ACTUAL archaeological mysteries
* How do tarps go missing between field seasons?
* Why do I not have as much success with grants as others?
* How did we lose a datum? It's a frickin concrete cylinder in the ground!
* Can you read this person's field notes? Because I can't.
* Is this a bone or a rock?
* Which Munsell number is closest to this layer?
* Is this a sherd or a very convincing rock?
* We've had weeks to excavate. Why are we always rushing on the last few days?
* Was that previously recorded artifact scatter plowed to oblivion?

The Sequel to a Duel (1825) by Hippolyte-Paul Delaroche (1797-1856, French)
Also known as "The Aftermath of a Duel". The painting depicts a deeply sorrowful woman, likely the wife or lover, cradling the body of a man who appears to be fatally wounded after a duel. Her grief is palpable, captured through Delaroche's mastery of light and shadow, highlighting her despair in contrast to the cold, lifeless body of the man she mourns.
